i l Application led March 11, 1907. Serial No. 361,807. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT T. NEWMAN, a citizen of the United States," residing at Greeley, in the county of Anderson and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful' Improvement inLGas-Regulators, of which the `follovvingis a specification.
This inventionv relatesl generally to igas regulators and more particularly to a regu- -lator adapted for use in connection with a gas main, the object, being to provide a low pressure gas regulator specially useful upon natural gas mams and useful for 'the house, oiiceor any other place where an even flow of gas is required. y V
Another object of the invention is to `pro-r vide a gas regulator in which the parts shall be so constructed and arranged that leakage will be impossible and one in which the slightest variation from normal pressure will serve to operate the valves and with these objects in view, the invention consists.
in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
l'n the drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure l is a vertical sectional the position of the vari-ous parts', when the pressure is normal.` Fi 2 -is a similar view -showing the position o the parts when the pressure has become abnormal. Fig. 3. is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
. In the practical embodiment of my invention, l employ-a box-like casing A having an opening A at one side which opening is surrounded by a threaded box A2 into which screws the (delivery pipe B. The opposite side 4of the casing is flan ed as shown at' A3 and securely bolted to this flange side of the casing is a metal plate C suitable packing C being interposed to provide an. absolutely tight joint. This plate C has an opening C2 arrangedjdirectly oppositethe opening A and surrounded by a'threaded sleeve'or boss C3 into which'screws the supply pipe D, and 50,
a short pipe E is also screwed in said opening and forms a continuation of the pipe D,` 'a suitable packing E being interposed between the ends of the pipes E and D. This pipe E extendsinto and supports the valve box'F, said box having a detachable top F with o enings Gr to permit the escape of the as, w ich after passing through the pipes and E and outthrough the valve box G .fills the casingr A and eventually passes out through the elivery pipe B.
The u per end of the casing A,is provided with a iaphragm 'chamber consisting of the integral'lower portion H and the upper por-v tion H securely bolted to the lower portion and rigidly holding the diaphragm I, between the two sections, and rigidly connected to the said diaphragm is a vertically dependingistem =K, carrying the valves L and M thereon, one of said valves being arranged in the valve box and the other below the said valve box as shown and it will be noted that the valve stem is guided in its movements by means of the guide brackets N attached to the top and bottom of the box as most clearly shown.
Whenever the pressure within the valve casing becomes too strong the'diaphragm is of course lifted and the valves seat in the opening Gr and cut ofi the flow of gas and as'soon as the pressure becomes normal the diaphragm will drop andconsequently the valve stem and valves and more gas will be permitted to ow into the casing. view of a gas regulator constructed inv accordance with my lnvention and showing vFor the purpose of adjusting the pressure upon the diaphragm so that it will become operative at any predetermined pressure, I employ a spiral spring O the lower end of which is adapted to surround the upper end of the valve stem and bear upon the central portion of the diaphragm, the upper end of said spring bearing against an adjustable screw P which works through the top central portion` of the section H and by raising or lowering the screw the tension upon the spring can be regulated and consequently Patented Oct. 27, 190B. p
the pressure of the diaphragm adjusted tov vany desired point.
It will thus be seen that I provide an ex'- ceedingly simple strong and durableform of gas regulator, one which will effectively cut oil' the flow of gas the moment the pressure becomes abnormal, one in which the possibility of leakage is reduced to a minimum and one ywhich owing to small number of parts and simplicity of construction, will be rendered easy and efficient in operation.
Havin thus fully described my invention,
WhatI c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
lA gas regulator comprising a' box like casing having a removable side, said removable side having a threaded opening, a supply pipe screwed into said opening, a short section of pipe screwed also into said opening from the interior of the box, a valve box oarried at the inner end of said short section of pipe, said valve box having a detachable top,.the top and'bottom of the box being provided with openings, valves adapted to close said opening, the stein carrying said valves the guidescarried by the valve box and in which the valve-stem works, a diaphragm arranged in the upper portion of the casing and to which the valve stem is connected, an adjustable spring pressing means operating upon the opposite side of the diaphragm and adelivery pipe leading from the box like casing, all ofsaid parts being constructed, arranged and adaptedto operate substantially as shown and described.
