To all whom it WIN/y concern:
Be it known that .I, ARTHUR LOPEZ JIM!- Nnz, of New York, in the county of New York and St ate ol ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'VV heels; and .I. do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in wheels and 'more particularly to suchas are adaptable for use on motor vehicles, the object of the invention being to provide a construction which shall, comprise a small number of parts, which can be manufactured cheaply Without a sacrifice of strength and elastlcity, but which on the other hand will possess great strength and which will not be liable to buckle and which will afi'ord adequate elasticity and avoid liability to oareening when the vehicle is subjected to abnormal lateral strain.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of a wheel embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional View illustrating the formation of the various parts oi the wheel members. Fig. 4 is a sectional view ol' the members constituting the body portion of the wheel, and Fig. 5'
is a similar view of the members composing the tire portion.
1 represents a hub and 2, 2, illustrate the two members of the body-portion of the wheel which are disposedbetween the members or plates 3 of the hub. The respective body-members are made of sheet metal and their central portions are flat and disposed parallel with each other. Between the central flat-portions 4 oi the body-members a wooden's 'mcer is placed and the parts are secured to the hub-plate by means of bolts 6 which pass through said hub-plates, the central flat-body portions of the wheel-members and the spacer 5. Each section of the Wheel body-portion is made with an annular head 7 (semi-circular in cross-section) and the web between this annular bead and the central flat-portion 4 of the body-section is made with an annular-series of radial beads 8, each of which is semi-circular in crosssection. Thus itwill be seen that When the two members or sections of the wheel body- 'portion are placed together the beads 7 and 8 will project outwardly from respective sides of said body-portion. Each plateor section of the lmdy-portion beyond the annular head 7 is made with radial beadedportions 9 in planes parallel with the radial bead 8. At the periphery of'each plate or section of the body-portion of the wheel an annular head 10 is torn'ied and when the parts are assembled, as hereinafter explained, the tire portion of the wheel will inclose the outer annular bead 10,as shown in Fig. 2.
The tire-portion of the wheel comprises two sheet metal rings 11, 11, bulged outwardly to form a chamber for the reception of a pneumatic tube 12, against the inner side of which the outer annular beads 10 of the body-portion of thewheel have a bearing. Beyond their bulged portions, the plates or rings 11 are made with parallel parts 13 between which spacing blocks or spools 14 are placed and through these parallel portions of the rings or plates 11 and through the blocks or spools 14, bolts 15 are passed for securing the two rings or plates 11 together. l leyond the parallel portions 13 oi the rings or plates 11 the latter are provided with lips or flanges 16 which embrace a cushion tire I? and hold the same in place. inwardly of the bulged portions of the ')lates 11, the'latter are brought together at intervals and secured by means of bolts 18. Those portions of the inner edges or flanges ofthe rings or plates 11, which form the tire portion of the wheel, coimtitute guide-ways through which the radial beaded portions 9 of the wheel-body pass and in which they can have lateral play,said guide-ways being made elongated as shown in Fig. 2.
From the constructimi and arrangement of parts above described it will be seen that the beaded periphery of the body portion (being cylindrical in ciosssection) will have an extended bearing against the inner face of the pneumatic tube and press the. same outwardly, as shown in Fig. 2. portion of the wheel will therefore, not only haven bearing against the pneumatic, tube The bodywhich will cause a radial pressure but that said body-portion of the wheel will also have a somewhat lateral. bearing against the pneiunatic tube which will result in preventing overturning of the wheel when the vehicle to which it is attached is subjected to ab normal lateral strain.
it is of course apparent that the bodyportion and the tire portion of the wheel must have vertical movement relatively to each other and this is permitted by the elongated guideqvays 1) of the tire-portion, through which the radial beaded portions 9 of the bodyportion of the wheel pass.
Various slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,- i
1. A wheel comprising a sheet-metal bodyportion and a tire-portion said body portion comprising two plates secured together and each provided with a peripheral head, the peripheral beads oi the respective sheet metal body members cooperating to form a hollow rim disposed within the tire-portion and a pneumatictube within the tire portion and constituting a bearing for the hol low rim formed by the peripheral beads on the plates of the body-portion.
2. A wheel comprising a body-portion, 1 tire-portion and a pneumatic tire within the tire-portion said body portion con'iprising two members secured together and having peripheral beads disposed within the tireportion and bearing against the pneumatic cushion therein, each plate of the body portion having heads between its center and the tire-portion and said plates of the body-portion having radial beaded portions passing into the tire-portion and terminating at the peripheral beads of the plates of the bodyportion. and said tire-portion having guide ways in which the radial headed portions of the wheel body can have radial and late :11 movement.
A wheel comprising a body portion, a tire portion movable relatively thereto and a pneumatic cushion within the tire-portion and bearing against the body portion, said bodyportion comprising two plates having fiat parallel central portions secured together, each of said plates having an outwardly projecting annular bead removed a distance from the flat central portion and also having radial beads extending from the fiat-central portion to the annular bead, and said plates also having radial beaded portions which enter the tire-portion and the peripheries of the plates composing the body portion of the wheel having beads located within the tire-portion of the wheel and bearing against the pneumatic cushion with- I in the latter.
