Myinvention relates to a safety attach ment for sawing tables.
It consists in the combination of parts, and 'in details o'l construction which will. be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l Fig. 2 is an end view or my saw-table safety attachment. Fig. 3 is a side elevation 01 same.

The guard 5 which protects that portion of the operators body from tho table up to the arm 3, consists of a series of fingers which are carried upon the arm 5-3, or a shaft extending through it, 'lhese arms have the lower ends pointed, and as thoy are allowed to swing freely upon their horizon tal support, these points will engagc the lumber which in being advanced on the table to the saw so that if by any accident the piece of linnb'r should be so engaged that it would otherwise be violently thrown backward in the direction of the operator, orlhc rear olf th'o table these points will iiinnediately engage and prevent it :lron': being thrown baolnvard; the angle. of the arms I being tmvard the front, and the points act ing as stops to prevent the lumbar from being thrown backvardly. Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire-to secure by Letters Patent is- I 1. In an apparatus of the character described, a bar adapted to be projected over a sawing table, substai tially parallel with the saw arbor, fingers lm'lependentlv turnable upon a shaft carried by the bar having points at the ends adapted to rest upon and engage the passing strip of lumber, lugs upon the sides of the fingers adapted to engage successively, a pawl carrying handle movable upon the same axis, and having a tug adapted to engage the first of the fingers when the handle is depressed, and latches with which the pawl may engage to retain the lingers in an elevated position.
2. In an a paratus of the character described, a supportextending transversely above the sawing table, substantially parallel with the saw arbor, a shaft carried by said support, pointed fingers adapttg'd to engage the surface of the lumber, passing to the saw, and to prevent its return. a fixed shield projecting upward from the finger support, means for raising the fingers, said means including inter-engaging lugs, with a pawl and ratchet mechanism whereby the depression of the lever causes the engagement. of the lugs, and a simultaneous raising of all the fingers.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, a vertical standard having a turnable head, an arm projecting horizontally from said head into the plane of motion of the tool, means by which said head and arrn are turnably engaged with the standard, a fixed guardextending upwardly from the arm, independently movable lingers extending downwardly having points to engage the passing material, and means by which said fingers are raised or released, said means in eluding lugs adapted to engage the hubs oi; the fingers, a pawl-earry1ng handle turnable upon the finger support having a lug adapted to engage the first of said fingers, and
catches with which the pawl may engage so that the turning of the handle will elevate all of the fingers out of contact with the surface beneath.
4. In an apparatus of the character described, a horizontally movable arm having a fixed guard extending upwardly therefrom in line with the tool, independent fingers turnably supported from the arm having points to engage the material, said lingers having engaging lugs upon the sides, a bandle having a lug to engage one of said fingers and transmit motion to the others whereby the whole series may be aired to free them from the material below. i
5. In an apparatus of the character described, a horizontally supported arm having a fixed guard extending upwardly llHt't from, independent lingers turnably mounted upon the arm so that the points of said tingers may drop and engage the material passing beneath, the heads of the fingers having curved key-ways, a feather upon the shaft extending into the key-wa vs, a handle turnable upontthe shaft having a lug to engage and raise the fingers, and a latch by which the handle and fingers are. maintained in elevated position.
