To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Rromnn SMITH and PETER CHRISTENSEN, citizens of the United States of America, residin respectively, at Denver, in the county of. enver and State of Colorado, and at Fort Logan, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Trucks, of which .the following is a specification.
This invention relates to car trucks, and more especially to certain new and useful improvements in; the so-called center-bearing trucks, which are designed to move laterally and around their centers, independent of the car supported thereon.
The objects of our invention are, to provide a truck of the class named, in which.
simplicity of construction is combined with strength and durability, which, by its peculiar construction, promotes the stability of the car body and renders its motion even and equable, and in which the position of the moving parts may be readily adjusted b the application of detachable wearing p ates. We attain these objects. by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in tlie various viewsof which, l1ke parts are similarly designated and in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of the truck; Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof; Fig.

Referring to the drawings, let the reference numeral 10 designate the rectangular truck frame, including the side beams 10*, and the therefrom depending pedestal jaws 11. in between which are arranged the journal boxes 12, which support the extremities of the axles 13 on the wheels 14.

by contact with adjacent movable parts of the truck. The plates 15 being held in place without the use of bolts or other fastening means, may be readily removed and interchanged with others, in case of wear or breakage.
The truck frame 10, rests upon eight coiled springs 17 and '18, arranged underneath the side beams 10'? and supported upon the equalizers 19, which are suspended from the axle boxes on the outside of the wheels 14. Each equalizer comprises two parallel bars 20 disposed on opposite sides of the pedestals, and which bein secured in spaced relation to each other y means'of a plurality of distance bolts 21, support the transversely dis posed seats 22, which bear the above named springs. Two of the four'springs arranged below each of the side beams 10", designated in the drawings by the numeral 17, are disposed intermediate the two axle boxes, while the outer, shorter ones 18, rest upon extensions 19" of the equalizers 19, beyond the pedestal jaws'and in proximity to the ends of the truck frame. The springs thus arranged, assure an even movement of the truck frame in relation to the two equalizers, and effectually prevent rocking of the carbody, which is supported thereupon through instrumentality of the truck bolster 23. The latter consists of two connected beams24, preferably composed of channel iron and disposed between and in parallel relation to two beams 25, made of angle iron, which being arranged at equal distances from the transverse axis of the frame, connect the parallel side beams 10", below which the equalizers extend.
Four wearing plates 26, provided with offset, outwardly ranging flanges 26, are secured uponv the vertical sides of the bolster, by means of bolts 27 inserted in registering apertures in the said sides and the therewith accessible, and may be removed or renewe in case of wear or breakage.
The truck bolster 23 issecured at its ends, upon two sets of elliptic springs 28, which are fastened upon the subjacent extremities of the so-called sand-board 29. The latter, being composed of channel iron, combines stren th with lightness, and being bent in the f orm of an are, it provides an unobstructed space for the brake-rods and other appliances disposed below the body of the car. The member 29 extending underneath and in parallel relation to the truck bolster, is movably supported at its extreme ends upon the transverse portions 30 of two U shaped hangers or stirrups 30, the upwardly ranging, normally vertical arms 30 of which, extend between the sides of the b lster and the parallel, transverse beams 2 and are pivotally suspended from the latter by means of pins 31, projecting through corresponding apertures in their extremities and supported in boxes 32 which are secured upon the upper surface of the stationary beams.
The movable connection between the extremities of'the sand-board and the subjacent transverse portions of the hangers 30, is established by means of ridged dies 33 secured upon the said portions 30, and which extend in correspondingly formed grooves 34 in blocks 35, which are fixed against the lower surface of the extremities of the member 29 and intermediate the depending flanges of the angle iron of which it is composed.
As the ends of the bolster are spaced from the inner surfaces of the side beams 10 of the truck frame, the former is free to move laterally in constant parallel relation to the upper surface of the latter, by the oscillatory motion of the hangers 30, and the consequent rocking movement of the dies 33, within the recesses 34 when, on rounding curves or by reason of imperfections in the railroad track, the trucks are forced to laterally deviate from its course of travels The car body 36 is ivotally supported upon the truck bolster y means of a pin 37 which passes through vertically alined apertures 38 and 38 in the center plates 39 and 40, respectively secured upon the bolster in central relation thereto and against the floor structure of the car body.
The center plate 39 has a runway' 39, concentric with the aperture 38 which in practice is occupied by a correspondingly formed depending ridge on the superposed plate 40, and is furthermore provided with an internal, annular channel 39concentric with the said runway and connecting with the upper surface of the plate by means of a plurality of vertical passages 39.
The channel is, in raotice, filled with a suitable lubricant, suc [as oil, which is con-' ducted in between the contacting surfaces of the two plates 39 and 40, by wads of cotdrawings.
