Be it known that I, CHAR-LES A. Linn s'rnoM, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Pittsburg, Northside, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Door Gears, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the present invention is to provide a modification of the structure shows and described in my application for Letters Patent entitled Oar door operating mechanism, filed November 20th, 1907, Serial N0.
- 402,989, in which a door operating and looking mechanism is disclosed comprising a door closing shaft with suitable levers or, arms thereon to raise the doors, a door locking shaft movable bodily into door locking position and suitable connections between the two shafts whereby they are operated in pro-per sequence.
In thehereinbefore mentioned application and in thepresent structure is employed an oscillating gear interposed between the two shafts and operated by a pinion carried by a door lockingshaft whichpinion is in turn operated by a suitable hand lever operated gear. When the oscillating gear has reached aJcertain period in its rotation, by suitable means, the pinion carried by the door locking shaft is caused to travel over said oscillating gear to carry the shaft into door locking position; A suitable cam operated stop is providedfor holding the door locking shaft in its non-locking position while the doors are being closed, which also permits the shaft to IIIOVGIIODI locking to non-locking position when the doors are being opened. Furthermore, a suitable means is employed for causing a parallel movement of the two ends of the door locking shaft and finally a suitable connection or link. is provided which connects the oscillating gear and the door closing shaft.
The present invention provides a modified connection between the oscillating gear and door operating shaft.
. Referring now to the drawings, in which like characters refer to like parts, Figure 1 is a plan view partly in section of one corner of a car embodying my invention and Fig; 2 is an and elevation of' the same.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, 1 represents a center sill or center sill structure, 2'.the end wall of the car, 3 theend sill, 1 the side, 5 the drop doors, 6' a cross-bearer, 7 the door raising shaft, 8 door raising arms carried by shaft 7, and 9 the wearing shoes carried by doors 5.

Stud 13 is mounted in a movable frame 17 and supported at its outer end by shaft 10 and at its inner end by stud 18 which extends through slot l9 in frame 17 20 is a slotted stop plate mounted to oscil, late in end sill 3 and embracing shaft 10. Plate 20 is provided with a cam projection 21 co -acting with a'cam 22 mounted on stud 23 seated in end sill 3.

In the structure described in the said application and in this application gear 24 is rovided with suitable connection between it and the door raising shaft 7. It is this latter portion of the mechof the present invention, and which parts will now be described as a modification of the structure shown in the hereinbefor'e mentioned application: Instead of employing a stop, a link and a crank arm as shown in my previous application, in the resent structure Iv mount a pinion 25 on stu 23 and a pinion 26 on shaft 7 which are connected by link 27 having therein slots 28 29, one at each end. The slot 28 receives the stud 23 and slot 29 receives a stud 30 seated in shaft hanger 31. Link 27 is furthermore provided with teeth 32 which engage pinion 26 and teeth 33 which engage pinion 25.
.The operation of the structure described is as follows: Assuming the doors to be closed as shown in the drawings, lever 14 is grasped after dog 16 has been thrown out and paw 15 reversed and moved fromthe side of the tion of the arrow, Fig. 1. This will rotate gear 11 in the direction of its arrow and pinion 11 in the same direction. Meanwhile cam 22 turning in the same direction as gear 24 has thrown cam projection 21 oh sto plate upwardly so that the slot in stop plate 20 ex tends upwardly instead of horizontally, thus effectively locking shaft 10 in its outer or non-door position. The doors now being open and it being desired to close the same, pawl 15 is thrown to the position shown in Fig. '1. Dog 15 is also thrown into engagement with pinion 12 and. the lever is moved a direction opposite the arrow; Fig. 1.

As the shaft is now locked against inward movement because of the position of stop plate 20, the rotary motion of the pinion 11 is transmitted to gear 24 causing gear 24 to rotate in the direction opposite its arrow which throws edge of lin 27 towards the center of car rotating pinion 26, shaft 7 and arms S-to raise the doors to a nearly closed osition. Having thus described my invention, the following iswhat I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. Ina car door gear, a door, means for closing said door, door supporting means geared to said door closing means to move into door supporting osition when the door is closed, and means or operating the mechanism, said gearing comprising a horizontally movable link.
2. In a 'car door gear, a door, means for closing said door, door supporting means geared to said door closing means to move into door supporting position when the door is closed, and means for operating the mechanism, said gearing comprising a rack bar or link geared to said door closing means and to said door supporting means.
3. In a car door gear, a door, means for closing said. door, door supporting means geared to said door closing means to move into door supporting position when the door is closed, and means for operating the mechanism, said gearing comprising a rack bar or link, a gear train connecting said door supporting means with said bar or link and a pinion connecting said bar or link with said door closing means.
4. In a eardoor gear, a door, means for closing said door, a bodily movable door sup porting shaft, a rack bar or link geared thereto and to said door closing means to move said shaft to door supporting position after the door has been closed and means for operating said mechanism.
5. In a car door gear, a door, means for closing said door, a movable uoor supporting device, a pinion for operating said device, a gear meshing with said pinion, a pinion moving with said gear, a stud on which said last named gear and pinion turn, a slotted rack bar or link engaging the under side of said last named pinion and supported at one end by said stud and a pinion carried by the door CHARLES A.
