To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY" CHARLES GAMAGE, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain'new and useful Improvement in Lubricating Devices for Shafts, &c., of which the following is a specification.
' The invention relates tollubricating devices for rotary shafts, and has for its object to simplify construction and insure more perfect lubrication.
The device is herein illustrated in an embodiment more especially designed for the lubrication of car axles,'in which the lubricant contained in a suitable vessel, such as the axle box, is intermittently transferred from said box to an exposed side of the journal, by means of a vibrating arm, prefer-' ably provided with a plate at its end, which raises or throws said lubricant to said journal surface. It is not essential that the arm or i plate'shall actually touch said surface, since its path of vibration may terminate at a distance therefrom over which interval the lubricant may be project'edand this result is assisted by making the arm a spring or actu ating it by resilient mechanism, or as herein shown, by adopting both expedients, The construction is also such that although the arm is operated by the'rotation of the'shaft, longitudinal play of the shaft in its bearing .is permitted and transmission thereof to said arm prevented. y

The car axle box A, axle B and bearing 0, are all of the usual pattern. Resting on the bottom of the box is a metalframe having side members D and transverse member E, the side members being curved near their ends to suit the inner curvature of the front of the box and the transverse member E resting against the rear wall of said box. Pivoted to each side member are two bars F, G,
which meet at their upper ends and are connected' by pins H. A light frame fitting 1 within the'box is thus provided, on the side members D of which, near their front ends, is supported a rod I on which is a long sleeve J, from which extend rearwardly two parallel plates K. A leaf spring arm L is secured at its end between said plates. Said spring arm extends beneath the axle journal,
and near its rear extremity has an opening through which passes a lug on the bottom of a metal plate M, saidlug being secured in the opening by a transverse pin on the under side of the plate. Any other convenient means of attaching the plate M to the spring arm L may be used. When the plate is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it is submerged in oil contained in the axle box.
In the end of the axle A is tapped a threaded hole to receive a threaded hollow rod N, provided with a flared flange O, which is received in a correspondingly formed countersink in the axle. Said rod carries a worm P and is received in bearings formed in both sections of a two part box Q, the sections of said box being flanged and connected by boltsand nuts as shown in Fig. 4. J ournaled in said box is a shaft R carrying'a pinion S engaging with worm P 'X, which loosely enter openings in the upwardly projectingarms of a frame Y, the horizontal connecting member of which passes beneath'spring 'arm L and is secured in place by rivets which also serve to fasten said armbetween' the plates K.
The operation ofthe device is as follows:
Motion is communicated from the rotating axle A to the worm P and so to pinion S and crank disks T; From said disks through the frame U, spring V and block W, the spring leaf arm L is swung intermittently upward, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1. The plate M, is thus caused to dash oil upward and against the under side of the axle journal, thus providing an ample sup ply of lubricant to the bearing. The faster the axle rotates, the more numerous the swings of the plate M per given time, and hence the greater the quantity of lubricant delivered. The interposition of the elliptical springbetween the crank disk-(T and Especial attention is called to the jointformed between the arm L and frame V by the loosely fitting pins X entering frame Y. This permits longitudinal play of the axle B in its bearing without transmitting said movement to said arm.
I claim:
1. In a shaft lubricator and in combination with the shaft journal, a vessel for holding lubricant, and, in said vessel, a vibrating arm for intermlttently throwing said lubricant from said vessel to said shaft journal.
2. The combinationof a-rotary shafthaving longitudinal play in its bearing, a device for applying lubricant to said shaft, and mechanism for transmitting motion from said shaft to actuate saiddevice; the said transmitting mechanism being operated by the rotation of said shaft and constructed to permit longitudinal play of said shaft in both directions and in all positions of said device without transmitting said movement to said device.
3. The combination of an axle, an axle box, a device in saidbox for applying lubricant to said axle, and mechanism for transmitting motion fromsaid axleto said device; the said transmitting mechanismbeing actuated by the rotation of said axle and constructed to permit longitudinal play of said axlein both directions and inall positions of said device without transmitting said movement to said device.-
4t. In a shaft lubricator, in combination with the shaft journal'and a bearingin-contact with a part of the journal periphery wherein said shaft rotates and has longitudinal'play, a device for applying lubricant to the exposed portion of said shaft journal, mechanism interposed between said device and said shaft for actuating said device by the rotation of said shaft, and, in saidinterposed transmitting mechanism, a transverse pivot oint for permitting said longitudinal play of saidshaft and for preventing transmission of'said'movement to said device.
5. The combination with a rotary shaft having'longitudinal play in its bearing of a vertically vibrating pivoted arm below said shaft for transferring lubricant to said shaft,
mechanism for actuating said arm by the rotation of said shaft, and a transverse pivot joint in said mechanism and connected to said armnear the pivot thereof for permit ting said longitudinal play of said shaft and preventing transmisslon thereof to said arm. (3. In an axle lubricator, in combination with the axle journal, a bearing above said journal an axle box, an axial rod ]')rojeeting from said journal, a worm thereon, a box inclosing said worm, a shaft journaled in said box, a pinion on said shaft engaging said worm, a crank on said pinion, a swinging arm pivotedin said axle box and a jointed connection between said arm and said crank.
7; In a shaft lubricator and in combination with the shaft journal, a bearing disposed in contact with a part of the periphery of said journal, a vessel for holding lubri cant, a plate in said vessel, a movable. spring support for said plate, and means for actuating said support to cause said plate to transfer lubricant from said vessel to the exposed portion of said ournal.
S. In a shaft lubricator and in combina tion with the shaft journal, a bearing disposed in contact with a part of the periphery ofsaid journal, a vessel for holding lubricant, a plate in said vessel, a movable spring support for said plate, and means for transmitting motion from said shaft to said support to cause said plate to transfer lubricant from said vessel to the exposed surface of said journal.
9. In a shaft lubricator in combination with the shaft journal and a bearing disposed above said journal, a vessel for holding lubricant, a removable supporting frame disposed within said vessel and not connected thereto, an arm pivoted in said frame. and means for vibrating said arm on its pivot intermittently to transfer lubricant from said vessel to the underside of said journal.
10. In combination with an axle journal box, axle journal and bearing therein above said axle journal, a device in said box for throwing lubricant contained therein intermittently against the under side of said journal, and means in said box for operating said device.
11. In combination with an axle journal box, axle journal and bearing therein above said axle journal, a remo *able frame in said box and not connected thereto, an arm pivoted in said frame and entering lubricant in said box and motion transmitting mechanism operated by said axle to vibrate said arm; whereby said lubricant is transferred intermittently by said arm from said box to the under side of said journal.
12. In a shaft lubricator in combination with the shaft journal and a bearing disposed above said journal, a vessel for holding lubricant, a pivoted arm below said journal, a worm and pinion .gear actuated by said shaft and transmitting mechanism between said pinion and said pivoted arm for vibrating said arm; whereby said lubricant is transferred intermittently by said arm from said box to the under side of said journal.
13. In a shaft lubrioator in combination with the shaft journal and a bearing disposed above said journal, a vessel for holding lubricant, a pivoted arm below said journal, and resilient means for transmitting motion from said journal to said pivoted arm to vibrate said arm; whereby said'lubricant is transferred intermittently by said arm from said box to the under side of said journal.
14. In a shaft lubricator in combination with the shaft journal and a bearing disposed above said journal, a vessel for holding lubricant, a pivoted resilient arm below said journal, and resilient means for transmitting motion from said journal tosaid pivoted arm to vibrate said arm; whereby said lubricant is transferred intermittently by said arm from said box to the under side of said journal.
15. In. combination with an axle journal box, axle journal and bearing disposed above said journal, a pivoted arm in said box below said journal, a worm'on the end of said shaft, a box inclosing said worm, a shaft journaled in said box, a pinion on said shaft within said box and engaging said worm, a crank on said shaft and motion.
transmitting mechanism interposed between said crank and said arm; whereby said lubricant is transferred intermittently by said arm from said box to the under side of said journal.
16. In combination with an axle journal box, axle j ournaland bearing disposed above said journal, a pivoted arm in said box below said journal, a worm on'the end of said shaft, a boxinclosing said worm, a shaft journaled in said box, a pinion on said shaft within said box and engaging said worm, a crank on said shaft and motion 1 transmitting mechanism including'a spring interposed between said crank and said arm; whereby said lubricant is transferred intermittently by said arm fromsaid box to th under side of said journal.
17. In combination with an axle journal box, axle journal and bearing disposed above said journal, a metal frame constructed to enter said box and comprising two side members and a transverse member, means for securing said frame in the bottom of said box, an arm pivoted between said side members, and means actuated by said journal for vibrating said arm; whereby said lubricant is transferred intermittently by said arm from said box to the under side of said journal.
18. In combination with an axle journal box, axle journal and bearing disposed above said journal, a metal frame constructed to enter said box and comprising two side members, a transverse member and two pairs of two members each, the members of each pair being pivoted at their lower ends to a side member and at their upper ends to each other, an arm pivoted between said side members and means actuated by said journal for vibrating said arm; whereby said lubricant is transferred intermittently by said arm from said box to the under side of said journal.
