have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Add1ngl\Iach1nes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electric operating devices for adding machines and the like, and
has forits object the production of novel and vmore efficient means for this purpose than have been heretofore devised, all as hereinafter morc fully explained and particularly pointed out in my claims.

W here the machine is to be operated by my novel electric operating devices, however, the hand lever will preferably be omitted, although I l ave shown it present in Fig. 1 for the purposes of the foregoing explanation. Under my invention the power for operating' the machine is supplied by an electric motor 4 suitably geared or otherwise connected with the operating shaft 2 of the machine, in the present instance by means of a gear 5 fast upon said shaft and meshing with a pinion 6 fast upon the'end of the motor shaft. ,The motor 4 (of rotary or constant torque type), is located in an electric circuit A B adapted to 'be supplied with current from any suitable source. This motor circuit is provided with two breaks or points of opening, one controlled by amanually operated circuit closer or switch at 3, and the other controlled by a circuit-breaker or switch 8 arranged to be automatically oper ated by the motor. In the present instance the switch 8 is normally closed and the switch 3 normally open. Upon closing the switch 3 by hand current will fiow through the motor circuit and actuate the motor, and when the motor shaft has made approximately one revolution in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1 an arm 7 fast upon and insulated from it, adjacent the switch 8, will contact with the latter and swing it forward, and thereby open the circuit and stop the" flow of current. i The relativesizes of the gear 5 and pinion 6 are such that the revolution of the motor shaft just described will serve to turn the operating shaft 2 of the machine forward to its limit of movement, and when the circuit is automatically opened at the switch 8, at the end of such revolution of the motor shaft, the resetting springs 14 within the machine, as illustrated in Fig. 1 which have been put under tension by the forward movement given the operating shaft, will return all the parts, including the mot-or shaft, to normal position. As the motor shaft approaches such osition (moving in a direction opposite that indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1), its arm 7 will contact with the forward side oi" the switch 8 and swing the latter. backward to normal position, thereby again closing the motor circuit at this point. If the circuit l has been held closed at the switch 3, and con tinues to be afterthe motor shaft has returned to normal position and again closed the circuit at the switch 8, the motor will be instantly renergized and the operation repeated; while if the circuit has been opened at the switch 3 during the return movement of the parts the closingof the switch 8 will have no effect u on the motor and it will remain at rest unt' the switch 3 is again closed.
The manual circuit-closer or switch at 3 may be of any suitable construction, but in the resent instance I have selfockin magnetic switch, of such construction t at when the switch is closed and the current thereby permitted to flow throu h the circuit, the switch will be-magnetica ly held in closed position until the aircuit is opened at the swltch 8, whereupon the cessation'of'fiow of current will release the magnetic switch and permit it to open. The details of the particular form of magnetic switch which I have provided in the present instance are illustrated in Fig. 2, where the contact terminals of the circuit, indicated at- 12 and 13, are adapted to be closed together by depression of the movable member or spring arm 9 of the switch, which is provided with a push-button 9 for the purpose. Located beneath the movable member 9 of the switch is an electro-magnet 10, whose coils are included in the motor circuit. When the spring arm 9 is depressed to close said circuit at the contacts 12 13, and the current thereby permitted to flow through the-circuit and coils of the magnet 10, the pole-piece 11 of the core of the magnet will attract the spring arm 9 and hold it in depressed position, with the circuit closed at the contacts 12, 13, so long as current continues to flow. When the circuit is opened at the switch 8, in the manner heretofore described, the cessation of v fiow of current will denergize the magnet shaft has completed and opened the switch at the other break in 10 and release the arm 9, which will then s ring upward to normal position and open the circuit at the contacts 12, 13.
As will be understood from the foregoing, with the provision of my self-locking ma netic switch 3, it is simply necessary to touch the push-button 9 and close -the switch,
whereupon the motorwill be set in operation and the switch be held closed until the motor its positive movement the circuit, thereby rendering it unnecessary to either manually hold the switch 3 closed 'durin the operation of the machine, or to rovi e mec anical means, in the form of atches and the like, for so doing.
In adding machines of the character described, it is frequently desirable to add and list or print the same amount several times in succession, to which end machines of this character are provided with what is termed a repeating key, indicated at'C in Fig. 1; When the numbered keys representing any provided a novel given amount are depressed and this repeating key then depressed, and held or latched in its lower position, the numbered keys will not be released and restored to normal position at the end of each 0 eration of the machine, so that by pul 'ng the operatin handle forward and releasing it a number 0 times in succession the amount re resented by the depressed he smay be a ded and rinted ,a correspon ing number of times. lily novel electric operating device lends itself to'this repeating'operation to great advantage, since after setting the proper numbered keys and the repeating key it is sim ly necessary to depress the push-button of t e switch 3 and hold it depressed until the machine has been 'ven the desired number of o erations by the motor, it being understood that under such circumstances the motor shaft will make cne revolution and its arm 7 open the switch -8, whereupon it will be returned tonormal position by the resetting springs within the machine, and upon reachin such position its arm 7 will automatica y closethe-switch 8 again, whereupon, the circuit bein maintained closed at the manually-operated switch 3, the motor, will be immediately renergized and the operation re eated so long as the switch 3 is 'held close It is not essential that the self-locking magnetic switch shall formpart of or be immediately associated withthe manual circuitcioser, as in the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. On the contrary, it may be located at any point in the circuit and the push-button be employed simply as a circuitcloser to initially close the circuit, where upon the magnetic switch will be energized to close the circuit at another point and maintain it closed until the circuit is automatically o ened by the motor at the switch 8 or such ot er switch as may be substituted for the latter. Thus in Fig. 3 I have illustrated a modified form of the device in which a button 9 is mounted upon the adding machine in convenient proximity to its keys, all other portions of the mechanism being placed at any convenient distance therefrom. In this case the movable core 11 of thesolenoid 10 acts upon the momentaryclosing of the circuit through the button or key 9 to movethe lever between the mercury cup contacts 12, 13, and through the field 4 of the motor 4 and the circuit breaker 8. The operation then takes place as above described with reference toFigs. 1 and 2.

If then the. button is pressed for an instantone reciprocatory motion of the. shaft is made. It will be obvious that in this case the armature shaft may be directly connected to the printing and spacing shaft of the adding machine.
A suitable motor powerful enough to op erate the machine canbe procured for any kind of current used -for electric lighting, so that the precisemotor to do the work is immaterial to the practice of my invention. It is not even necessaryto employ a motor but I may use instead a twisting magnet as' indicated in Fig. 5. This twisting magnet comprises a field I and an amature A andis rei erable in some respects to the motor, heing adapted lior use with either direct or alternating currents. Upon establishing the current through the field of the magnet the armature A, which may be attached or geared tothe shaft of the adding machine, is turned 'through an angle of about 90, thereby operating said shaft, The circuit being broken at-the proper pointthrough a circuit breaker operated or controlled by the magnet, the several parts return instantly to their original positions. Inasmuch as the motor or magnet acquires considerable momentum in its travel,
and as this momentum increases with the speedof the operation, itis desirable that some means he provided for preventing the motor from inflicting a blow upon the adding .machine at the-end of its forward stroke. This may be accomplished in many ways, as, for instance, by such construction that the circuit is broken earlier than would otherwise be n'ecessary, so that the momentum is absorbed by the time the travel is com leted. One such construction is illustrated in ig. l,

An e ectrical attachment to an adding machine to twist its shaft against a spring resistance by pressing a button, which embodies ameans for completing the circuit by hand, thereby causing a magnet or motor to twist the shaft sufiiciently to operate the adding machine, a spring for returning the shaft to its normal position means for keeping the circuit closed while the motor is operating, and means for breakin and makingthe circuit by the motion, so t at the break permits the spring toreturn the whole apparatus to the startirrg position for the purpose d escribed.
