To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reed City, in the county of Osceola and State of -Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Perambulators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hand sleighs for carrying babies,and its objects are: First, to provide a baby sleigh that may be readily converted into a wheeled perambulator so that the wheels may be used in places where' the snow has been worn through or melted off of the ground or walk where the sleigh is being used. Second, to so hang the wheels that they will readily swing to place as desired, and, third, to provide a sleigh of the kind described that may be readily assembled or taken to pieces. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sleigh with two wheels removed to show the position and ap lication of 'the jointed supports that cont o l the movement of the wheels. Fig. 2 is a back elevation of the same with both wheels in place. Fig. 3 is a top plan of the sleigh box showing the manner of securing the sides, ends and bottom together, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the back end of the sleigh with one wheel removed to plainly illustrate the action and movements of the jointed sup orts that control the movements of the wheels.

A represents the body or box of the sleigh and B represents the runners, which are permanently secured to the box A by means of the clamps b b that pass through the bottom of the box and are secured by means of nuts &c. as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3. The runners are provided with serpentine standards for the purpose of giving to them the desired elasticity when passing over rough laces, the back ends thereof being provide with offsets, B, for engagin the axletree F that supports the wheels 0 The wheels 0 are adjustably secured to the body of the slei h by means of connecting bars D and E; t e bar D being pivotally secured to the body A, as at d, and to the bars E, as at d, and the bar E is so connected with the axletree F that the motion of the two sets of bars controls the adjustment of the wheels, as follows: When the perambulator is to be used as a sleigh thewheels C are held to the position indicated by their solid lines in the several figures, by placing the axletree F in the hooks G, as plainly shown in Fig. 2, but when it is found necessary to usethe wheels to carry the --perambulator the axletree F maybe lifted out of engagement with the hooks G, with the toe of the foot, or otherwise, the back end of the sleigh raised up and the wheels allowed to swing to place, as indicated by their dotted lines in the several figures. With the bars swinging'down to position they assume a straight line, as indicated by the dotted lines D until the edge of the bar D comes in contact with the post H, which causes the wheel to swing forward far enough to bring the axletree F in front of the offsets B when the body of the sleigh will be dropped or lowered to rest its weight upon the axletree when the axletree will so engage the offsets B that the body will be supported and carried upon the axletree F and the wheels C C and the bars D and E will assume the position indicated by the solid lines D and the dotted lines leading therefrom down to the dotted outlines of the wheel hub where it engages the offset B in Fig. 3. When carrying the wheels back to the position of the solid lines C O the hub of the wheel will be made to travel, practically, upon the dotted lines E, in Fig. 3, until the bar D comes in contact with the post H, whence it dro s back and the axletree F drops into the hoo s G and is supported by them, as hereinbefore described, and the perambulator'is sup ort edentirely upon the runners B and use as a sleigh.
It will be readily seen that the adjustment of the wheels from the position indicated by the solid lines to that shown by the dotted lines, and vice versa, may be easily and readily accomplished either with the foot of the operator, as hereinbefore suggested, with the hands, or by any other convenient means.
Thus far the description has been wholly upon the manner of securing and manipulat ing the hind wheels of the perambulator, and I deem these fully sufficient for all ordinary uses, as the device is designed to be used only when the snow has thawed or disappeared from short spaces where the device is to be used, but forward wheels may be attached and made available by the means indicated at C in Fig. 1, which will be readily understood by a casual study of the drawing without further description.
I have arranged to make the body A easily taken to pieces or re-assembled by securing metal cleats or wings a a to the sides of the body and securing them to the bottom by means of the clam s b b by which the runners B are secure to the bottom, and the back may be secured between the sides in like manner, as indicated in Fig. 3, utilizing the bolts 9 g, with which the hooks G G are secured to the back, for securing the cleats Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In combination with the body and run ners of a sleigh perambulator, bars pivotally secured at one end to the body, bars pivotally secured to the free end of said bars, an aXletree secured to the free ends of the latter bars, hooks for sup orting said axletree back of the body, whee s mounted on said axleto the body at one end and secured to the aXletree at the other end with an intermediate pivotal joint in each pair of bars, posts on the body in the line of travel of said bars, the axletree removable from the back of the body, and oflsets in the runners to secure the aXletree to place with the wheels depending 2 below the runners, substantially as shown and described.
