Be it known that I; Janna A. Cass, of Brookl State oi New York, have inven l Improvements in Sprinkler-Heads, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawinga,is a, full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements sprinkler heads for automatic tire extinguishing systems and refers particularly to the general structure of the frame, strut, distributer plate and stopper mechanism.
)ne of the essential objects is to provide a spring frame which is tensioned by the adjiistinent of the strut so that when the integrity of the strut is broken by the burning of the fusible detent or detenta, its resistance to the tension ofthe sprin 'frame will allow the' latter to retract and t ereby more quickly and ra idly.spresd the parts oi the strut to aliow e opening of the stopper.

In carrying out the objects stated, I provide a spring frame comprising a tubular nipple l-, and opposite outwardly arched spring arms -2- merging in a tubular'hub 3 some distancefrom the nip le 1 forming substantinll y semi-circular w arms rigidly secured at one .end to the nipple 1 and preferably inte al therewith and having their opposite en free to yield toward and from said nipple. This nipple is formed with a central lengthwise water passage' -4 therethrough and is also threaded exteriorly for securenient to one of the pipe iixturea of the water discharging systems not shown.
The outer end of the nipple is substantiall flat and forms a suitab e seat for a lead was er or packing 5-. vupon which is mounted a cap (3- of German silver' or other non-eorrodible material which covers theouter end of the water passage -4, said ca '-6- being enjged by an outer disk f'brass or ot `er suitable metal which is somewhat thicker and heavier than the csp -5-- 'and gradually increases .in thickness tow ard the center for increasing its 'nsA strength and abilityto resist the preesure'of the vpassage -4 thereby preventing the lateral displacement of the cap 6v and same timoniere effectively bracing the inner edges of the packing -5- against its seat to avoid any ossibility of leakage at this joint.

The opposite ends o the tie piece llterminate short of the basis of the oove -15- and the intervenin 'space is ti led in with fusible material suc as soft solder, similar fusible material being interposed between the adjacent faces of the tie piece -l l and detent platos -12- to normally lock or tie said detent plate to the tie plate while the latter is secured by `similar fusible material 17 to the adjacent faces of the strut sections 10. The meeting ends of these strutsections' 10 are slightly sepa. rated and the intervening specs is hlled in with fusible material. i l
The grooves -15- and also the tie piece -11- and delent plates -12 are located wholly at 'one side of the axis of the frame or at one side of a straight line drawn between the bosses -13 so that when the fusibley material is destro cd by heat, the tension-of the a ring arma w ich is produced by adjusting t e screw 9- against the strut operatea to separato the parts of the strut and to throwthem out of position with a quick snap action.-
The screw -9- is adjustable in athreaded aperture in the hub -3- and is provided at its outer end with a-hand piece 20 .vhereby it may be rotated, and upon the seems outer ond of this screw and outer face of thn hub -3- is joumaled a rotary distributorl plato -2l having outwardly llaring wings the wings-42.- beingprovded on theiroutor .sides wlthoutwardly and u wardly llaring rccesses -2-t and lwvele( faces `-25 for the purpose of' distributing the water radially in all directions in thin sheets some diatance'from the sprinklerhead, the impact of the water against t which are adjacent 'the slots -23- serving tr rtato'thc head thereby lending centrifugal force to thro-w the water still farther from the sprinkler head and at the same time to more evenly distribute it over the underlving surface or around the room in which the sprinkler head is located.
In operation, assuming that the strut and stopper sie firmly adjusted by the screw 9 with sulcient force to slightly tension the spring arms -2-, then as'soon as the fusib ebend between the parts -1 0-, f-l 1 and 1-1 2- is disintegrated byheat, said parts 10, -1l and l2 tend to fall apart and are positivelyforced out of o crative connection withV eac i other and wit i the stopper first by the relaxation of the tensioncd spnn arms 2, and second by the rassure o the water against. the stopper, tris disintegration of the strut bein facilitated by rea-f son of the fact that the race platea -12-.
