PACKING-CASE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALONZO B. BOYLAN, Casrsrm. F. BOYLAN, and CLAYTON L. BEN XETI, citizens of the United States, and residents of Victor, in the county of Teller and State of Colorado,'have invented a new and useful Improvement in Packing-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in packing cases particularly adapted to contain fruit, eggs and similar produce.
The object of our invention is to provide a packing case having a cover which may be quickly removed for the inspection of the fruit or other produce contained in the packing case and without injury to the packing case.
Our invention provides further, a packing case having a removable cover which may be quickly replaced and'locked in the closed position after the contents of the case have been inspected.
Our invention provides further, a packing ease having a bottom, two sides and two ends, a cover slidably mounted between the ends inwardly and outwardly over the upper edges of the sides, and releasable means for locking the cover. in the closed )osition.
Our invention provides stil further, a packing case comprising a bottom, two sides and two ends, a cover comprising two members independently slidable inwardly and outwardly between the ends and over the upper edges of the sides respectively, and means for locking the two members of the cover in the closed position.
Other novel features of our invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate our invention-Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved packing case, the cover being shown in solid linesin the closed position and in dotted lines in the open position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation view of one corner of the packing case showing one of the cover locking devices in solid lines in a closed position, the open position of the locking device being represented in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the packing case showing one of the cover locking devices in the closed position. Fig. 4 is an outer side elevation view of one of the cover locking devices detached. Fig. 5 is an edge elevation view of what is shown Fi 4.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Similar characters of reference denote similar parts. o
In its preferable form our packing'case comprises a horizontal bottom 1, two vertito the bottom 1, two vertical sides 4 an 5 secured respectively to the ends'of the memhorizontal members 6 and 7, disposedside by side and slidably mounted between the ends 2- and 3, inwardly and outwardly over the upper edges of the sides 4 and 5 respectively, In the preferable form the inner sides of the ends 2 and 3,'are provided each with a horizontal groove 8 extending the full length of the end and disposed above the upper edges of the sides 4 and 5. The ends of the members 6 and 7 are slidably mounted in the grooves 8, said members being slidable independently inwardly and outwardly whereby the contents of the case may be more readily inspected. For retaining the cover in the closed )osition, we )rovide the following describe releasable coking means :-Two resilient locking devices com-- prising preferably two flat resilient metallic plates 9, are pivotally mountedupon two nails 10, respectively, said nails being driven horizontally in opposite ends of the members 2- and 3, at [points respectively above the upper edges 0 the sides 4 and 5. i The free end of each plate 9 is provided with an outwardly extending projection 11, adapted to engage, when the plate 9 is in the position cent side of the body. \Vhen the are in the position just described, tey are disposed respectively between the outer edges of the cover members 6 and 7, and the sides 4 and 5 respectively, in which position they obstruct the outward movement of the cover members. Vhen it is desired to in-' spect the contents of the packing case, the plates 9 may be swung to the open position, represented in dotted lines in Fig. 1, after which the cover members 6 and 7 may be successively outwardly withdrawn over the upper edges of the sides 4 and 5 respectively, 1 thus uncovering the goods contained in the packing case and permitting ready inspection thereof. After the contents of the case have-been inspected the members 6 and 7 are slid inwardly to the positions represented in' solid lines in Fig. 1, after which the resilient plates 9 may be swung downwardly and incal ends 2 and3, secured at their lower edges shown in Fig. 3, the inner side of the adja-.

hers 2 and 3, and a cover comprisin two lates- 9 wardly to the position represented in Figs 1 and 3. To position the plates 9, as shovm in Fig, 3, the free ends of said plates must be forced inwardly, and when so positioned, the resiliency of the said plates causes the projections 11 thereon to bear firmly against the inner sides of the adjacent sides 4 and 5 ofthe body.
In the packing cases for containing fruit, and as ordinarily constructed, it is necessary, when inspecting the fruit, to pry the cover from the body to which itis nailed, which operation rec uires, after the inspection, the renailing of the cover to the body. Furthermore, covers are frequently broken and destroyed while being )ried oil from the body of the case. \Vith the use of our invention the inspection of the contents of the packing cases may be quickly made without in ury to the packing cases and with the avoidance of the annoying incidents just alluded to.
Various modifications of our invention may be grade without departing from its spirit.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A packing ease comprising a body having a bottom, two sides and two-ends, the inner side of each end being horizontally grooved its full length above the upper edges of the sides, a cover comprising two members disposed side by side and slidable in said grooves inwardly and outwardly over the upper edges of the sides res iiectively, and v0 locking devices pivotally mounted on the body and movable to and from positions for obstructing the outward movement of the two members respectively of the cover. 7
2. A packing case comprising a bod hav ing a bottom, two sides and two en s the ends on their inner sides each having a horizont-al groove extending the full length of the end and disposed abovethe upper edges of the side. s,'a cover comprising two members disposed side by side and slidable in said grooves, inwardly and outwardly over the upper edges ofthe sides, and two resilient devices pivoted to the body and movable respectively into and out of the box and to and from positions ol.)structing the out-ward movement of the cover members respectively, the free ends of said resilient devices, when the devices are so positioned, bearing against the inner sides respectively of the sides of the body.
3. A packing case comprising a body having a bottom, two sides and two ends, a cover slidably mounted between the ends, inwardly and outwardly over the upper edge of one of the sides of the body, and a resilient plate pivoted to the body and having an outwardly extending projection at its free end, said resilient plate being movable into and out of the box to and from a position in which the projection thereon will engage the inner side of the adjacent side of the body, in which position said plate will obstruct the outwar movement of the cover.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
