PATENT oEETeE.
MARTIN J. GARNEY, OF BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS.
ASH-RE CEP'IACLE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 8, 1908.
Application filed September 6, 1907. Serial No. 391,564.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN J. (JARNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ash-l{ecep tacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for holding cigar and cigarette ashes, the object of the invention being to provide a convenient device which may be attached beneath the arm of a chair, a table top, desk, or any suit able and convenient support. The device is preferably pivoted beneath the table top or chair arm so that it can be swung in out of the way when not in use and when it is desired to use the same it may be readily swung out, the ashes placed therein, and the device swung in under the arm or table top, as the case may be. The device is particularly convenient and adapted to be placed upon the arms of piazza chairs, as in any case in which it is placed u on a chair it obviates the necessity of a smoker rising from the chair when he wishes to knock the ashes from his cigar or cigarette.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the fol lowing specification and articularly pointed out in the claims thereof? Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved ash receptacle showing'the same attached to the under side of a portion of a chair arm. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the chair arm indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section taken on line 3-3, Fig. 2, a portion of the chair arm being shown in section in connection therewith.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 is the receiver in which the ashes are deposited. Said receiver is preferably cylindrical and has projecting radially from the upper end thereof three pins 6, 6, these pins resting in corresponding de ressions 7, 7 formed in the rim 8 of a ho der 9. The holder 9 consists as a whole I of an arm 10 at the outer end of which is the cylindrical rim 8 which has an opening 11 extending vertically therethrough, the ash receiver 5 extending downwardly through said opening. The holder 9 is pivoted upon a screw 12 which is screwed into the under side of the chair arm or other suitable support 13. The ash receiver 5 is preferably provided with a cover formed in two parts 14 and 15, the part 14 being fixed to the ash receiver and the part 15 hinged thereto. In using my improved ash rece tacle the holder 9 and ash receiver 5 are or inarily located beneath the chair arm 13. When it is desired to deposit ashes in the receiver the arm 10 is swung out with the ash receiver 5, the cover 15 is lifted by means of a suitable finger piece 16 thereon, and the ashes deosited in the receiver 5. Thecover then eing closed the receiver and its supporting holder are swung back beneath the chair arm. When the receiver is filled it is readily removed from the holder and the contents dumped.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is adapted to be pivoted to and beneath a suitable support, said holder consisting of an arm terminating at its outer end in a rim with an opening extending vertically therethrough, a receiver adapted to contain ashes sup ported on said rim by means of a plurality of ins extending from said receiver and resting in a plurality of corros onding depressions formed in said rim, said receiver extending downwardly through said opening, and a cover hinged to said receiver and adapted, when raised, to engage said support when said arm is swung thereunder.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. Y
WILLIAM T'. LrToHMAN, WILLIAM M. LEMMoN.
