J. HERGESHEIMEE. MEANS FOR PREVENTING OFFSET IN CONNECTION WITH PRINTING.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 13, 1908.

W/T/VESSES:
'impulses JOHN HERGESHEIMER, or PHILADELPHIA,
PUBLISHING COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHI JERSEY.
PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE CURTIS A, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF NEW MEANS FOR PREVENTING OFFSET IN CONNECTION WITH PRINTIN To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HERGESHEIMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invent;-
ed certain new and useful Means for Prevent ing Ofl set in Connection with Printing, of which the following is a s ecification.
The principal object o the present invention is to prevent offset, that is what might be called blurring, smirching or smearing of the sheets as they are delivered from a printing press in a pile. I In accordance with the present invention the printed sheets are passed through heat radiated from a heater, which may be of the electric variety, and near a single insulated discharger or conductor receiving a high voltage unidirectional current or a high voltage static charge of one polarity, or high voltage of the same sign or olarity; the impulses of opposite sign or polarity, or the other side of the source of unidirectional current or charge of electricity, being sent to earth or grounded with the result that these forces cooperate in setting the ink and preventing oflset and incidentally neutralizing static electricity, if present-in the aper.
The invention w1ll be claimed at the end hereof, but will first be described in connec tion with the accompanying drawings which illustrate forms of apparatus embodyin features of the invention and chosen for the sake of explanation.
Figure 1, is a more or less diagrammatic side view illustrative ofthe invention. Fig. 2, is a perspective View illustrating mechanism embodying features of the invention, and Fig. 3, is a diagrammatic view illustrating a modificationof the mechanism shown in 11g. 2.
In the drawings 1, are electric heaters, the construction of which is not material, but for the sake of explanation they are shown to consist of bars 2, Wrapped with insulating material 3, as of asbestos, upon which are wound coils of wire 4.
5, is a reflector or shield, or both, and it may be lined with asbestos. The shield and bars are shown as supported .by means of rods 6.
7, is a conductor or discharger arranged in proximity with the heater and to the side Specification of Letters Patent. Applicationfiled May 13, 1908. Serial No. 432,574.

thereof toward the 'ress. The conductor 7, is properly insulate and is shown as mounted in insulating holders 8. The electric heater issupplied with current from any source in order to heat it.
In the'drawings I have shown an alternating current generator 9 having connection -by way of conductors 10, through the coils of theheater. 1 The conductor 01' discharger 7, is connected with a source of high tension unidirectional current or charge or of hign tension impulses of the same sign or polarity. A Wimshurst staticgenerator having one pole grounded and the other connected with the conductor or discharger 7, is an example of such a source and the sign of the pole or part to which the conductor is connected is lmmaterial. As being in some ways a-Inore desirable source, I have shown a transformer generator by conductors 11 and of which the secondary is connected at one end to earth or grounded by a conductor 12, and at the dther end to the conductor or discharger 7, through adevice or rectifier having an asymmetrical resistance and therefore permitting of the passage of unidirectional current or impulses of like polarity to the conductor or discharger. In Fig. 2, this device or rectifier is shown to comprise a valve tube 13 and in of which the primary is connected with the Fig. 3, a s ark gap 17, of which a multiple se- Inasmuch as the conductor 7 is arranged and connected up in substantially the manner described in British Patent No. 5948 of .1897, it follows that its effect isto remove static electricity from the pa er, if the same is present.
n use the described apparatus is arranged inrespect to the press and to theprinted sheets as they come from the press in the manner shown in Fig. 1 that isto say, it is arranged between the press and the pile of sheets with the discharger or conductor 7 .on the press side of the heater 1; The sheets are delivered as shown by the sheet 14 in Fig.
1, above and past the described apparatus.
In doing thisthey move in the direction shown by the arrow. The heater radiates heat upon the sheets as they pass and in passing the sheets are subjected to the results of the silent discharge or leakage which occurs at the'conductor 7. Among the efi'ects of this silent discharge or leak mention may be made of the generation of ozone and the disturbance of the condition of the surrounding air. These eflects as well as others, which it is unnecessary to describe in detail in conjunction with heat radiated fromthe heater cause the ink on the sheets'to become so set that offset is obviated.
What I claim is,
1. Means for preventing oflset'in printed sheets which comprise an electric heater and a single insulated conductor or discharger arranged in proximity with each other and with the moving sheets, and a source of unidirectional high tension current or charge connected with said conductor or discharger and with ground, substantially as described. 2. Means for preventing offset which comprise an electric heater and a discharger operatively arranged in respect to each other, and means for supplying current to the heater and high tension unidirectional current or charge to the discharger, whereby asilent discharge or electrical leakage is effected in proximity with the heater, substantially as described;
3. Means for preventing oflset which comprise a heaterand a discharger operatively arranged in respect to each other, and means for supplying high tension unidirectional current or charge to the discharger, whereby a silent discharge or electrical leakage is effected in roxlmity with the heater, substantially as escribe 4. Means for preventing offset in rinting which comprise a heater and a sing e insulated conductor or discharger arranged in proximity with each other and with the movmg sheets, and means for charging the discharger with' unidirectional charges orimpulses, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto.
signed my name.
JOHN HERGESHEIMER.
