TAMPING-MACHINE Application filed January 18, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL OLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stoughton, in the county of Dane and State of VVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tamping-Machines, of which the following is a specification, referones being had to the accompanying drawmgs.
My invention relates to improvements in tamping machines and more particularly those designed for tamping plastic material in molds.
The object of the invention is to provide a tamping mechanism of this character which will be simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction and which may be conveniently operated and adjusted to bring the tamping mechanism to any part of the mold and which may be easily controlled so that the plastic material may be tamped or packed as firmly or as lightly as desired.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved tamping mechanism; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; Fig. 3 is a front end elevation; Fig. 4 is a detail section on the line 44 in Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of the segmental guide; and Fig. 6 is a detail section on the line 66 in Fig. 1.
In the drawings 1 denotes a suitable base on which are arranged two guides 2, 3 in the form of spaced upright posts. The latter are connected at their upper ends by a horizontal top piece 4 so that said parts form an upright guide frame or support in which is arranged a substantially horizontal bar or member 5 adapted to have movement in both vertical and horizontal planes. This bar or member 5 has its ends projecting between the spaced upright guides 2, 3 and its rear end is supported by a link 6 which serves as its fulcrum support and which pivotally connects it to a horizontally disposed lever 7- also arranged between the guides 2, 3. This lever 7 is fulcrumed intermediate its ends at 8 upon a post or upright 9 rising from the base 1, and its front end which projects beyond the guide 3 is provided with a handle 10 and is adapted to be locked in an adjusted position by means of a rack 11 arranged upon Specification of Letters Patent.

one of the guide posts 3 or by any other suitable locking means. It will be seen that by adjusting the lever 7 the link 6 may be raised or lowered so as to change the horizontal plane of the pivot 01'' fulcrum for the bar or member 5. The latter is adapted to be oscillated by a pitman 12 which has its upper end projecting through and slidable in a guide opening 13 in the top piece 4 and its lower end connected to the crank pin 14 of a crank wheel or disk 15 fixed upon a horizontal shaft 16 journaled in suitable bearings 17 and provided with tight and loose pulleys 18, 19 for a driving belt.
The pitman 12 carries intermediate its ends a pin or bolt 20 which projects through and is adapted to slide in a longitudinal slot 21 formed in the member or bar 5. By connecting the latter to the pitman in this manner and by providing the link 6, it will be seen that the bar or member 5 will be permitted to have a longitudinal sliding movement in the guides 2, 3 as Well as a vertical oscillatory movement. Upon the projecting front end of the bar or member 5 is a tamper carrying bar 22 which is connected to a vertical pivot 23 so that it is adapted to have a swinging movement in a horizontal plane. This bar 22 is guided in its swinging movement and maintained in a plane parallel with that of the bar or member 5 by means of a segmental-sha ed guide consisting of angularly arrange arms 24 having their inner converging ends secured upon opposite sides of the bar or member 5 and their outer diverging ends connected to spaced segmentalshaped bars 25 between which the tamper carrying bar 22 is adapted to swing. Pivoted to the projecting free end of the bar 22 and depending therefrom is a tamper stem 26 which carries at its lower end a tamping head 27.
In using the machine, the mold is placed beneath the tamper 27, the plastic material is poured into the mold and the driving belt or band is then shifted from the loose to the tight pulley 18 for the purpose of rotating the crank 14 and causing the pitman 12 to oscillate the bar or member 5 in a vertical plane. This movement of said bar or member 5 causes the tamper 27 to be reciprocated ver tically to tamp the material in the mold. I/Vhen it is desired to move the tamping head to a different part of the mold the bar 22 is swung horizontally in either direction in a plane transverse to the longitudinal axis of the bar or member 5, and said bar or member 5 is shifted longitudinally in either direction as will be readily understood. When it is desired to vary the force of the blow or stroke of the tamping head the handle end 10 of the lever 7 is raised or lowered and either held in such position by hand or locked by means of the rack 11, this adjustment of the lever causing the fulcrum carrying link 6 to be raised or lowered to change the fulcrum of the bar or member 5.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction set forth and that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. In a tamping mechanism, a guide, a horizontally disposed .member arranged in said guide-for horizontal sliding movement and vertical oscillatory movement, a shiftable fulcrum for said member, means for oscillating said member and a tamper carried I by said member.
2. In a tamping mechanism, a guide, a horizontally disposed member arranged in said guide for longitudinal sliding movement and a vertical oscillatory movement, a shift able fulcrum for said member, means for oscillating said member, a segmental guide carried by said member, a bar arranged for horizontal swinging movement in said segmental guide and a tamper depending from said bar.
3. Ina tamping mechanism, the combination of a vertically movable member, means for oscillating said member, a segmental guide upon said oscillatory member, a bar arranged for horizontal swinging movement in said guide and a tamper dependingfrom said bar.
4:. In a tamping mechanism, a guide, a horizontall disposed member'arranged in said guide for longitudinal sliding movement and a vertical oscillatory movement, an adjustable lever, a fulcrum for said member carried by said lever, means for oscillating said member, and a tamper carried by said member.
5. In a tamping mechanism, a guide, a horizontally disposed member arranged. in said guide for longitudinal sliding movement and a vertical oscillatory movement, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends, a locking device for one end of the lover, a link upon the other end of the lever and provided with a fulcrum for said member, means for oscillating said member and a tamper carried by said member.
6. In a tamping mechanism, a guide, a horizontally disposed member arranged in said guide for longitudinal sliding movement guidebeing formed intermediate its ends with a longitudinal slot, a shiftable fulcrum for one end of the member, a tamper carried by the other end of the member, a crank, a pitman connected to the latter and having a pin working in the slot in said member and a guide for one end of said pitman.
7. In a tamping mechanism, the combina tion of a member mounted for oscillation in a vertical plane, a lever, a link pivoted to the latter and carrying a fulcrum for said oscillatory member, a tamper carried by said oscillatory member, a drive shaft, a crank thereon, a pitman connected to said crank and loosely connected to said oscillatory member whereby the latter will be oscillated and at the same time permitted to shift horizontally.
8. In a tamping mechanism, the combination of a vertical guide, a horizontally disposed lever mounted for vertical swinging movement in said guide and formed intermediate its ends with a longitudinal slot, a ful crum for one end of said lever, a tamper carried by the otherend of said lever, a crank, a pitman havinga pin working in the slot in said lever and a guide for one end of the pitman.
9. In a tamping mechanism, the combination of 11 right guides, a member mounted in said gui es for vertical oscillatory movement and longitudinal sliding movement, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends, a link pivoted to one end of said lever and carrying the fulcrum for said member, a shaft, a crank carried by the latter, a pitman connecting said crank and said member and a tamper carried by said member.
10. In a tamping mechanism, the combination of u right guides, a member mounted in said guirfes for vertical oscillatory movement and longitudinal sliding movement, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends, a link pivoted to one end of said lever and carrying the fulcrum for said member, a shaft, a crank carried by the latter, a pitman connecting said crank and said member, a horizontally disposed segmental guide u on said member, a swinging bar in said gui e and a tamper depending from said bar.
11. In a tamping mechanism, the combination of upright guides each consisting of spaced posts, a top piece uniting said guides and having a vertical guide opening, a horizontally disposed lever mounted for vertical oscillatory movement between the posts of said guides and formed intermediate its ends with a longitudinal slot, a shiftable fulcrum for one end of saidlever, a segmental guide upon the other end of said lever, a bar mount ed for horizontal swinging movement in said guide, a tamper carried by said bar, a crank, and a pitman connected to the latter and having a pin working in the slot in said lever,
the upper end of the pitman being guided in the opening in said top piece.
12. In a tamping mec anism, the combination of a vertical guide, a member arranged therein for movement in both vertical and horizontal planes, a vertically swinging element carrying a fulcrum for said member whereby the latter may be moved longitudinally in a horizontal plane, means for oscillating said member vertically and a tamper carried by said member.
13. In a tamping mechanism, the combination of a vertical guide, a member arranged therein for movement in both vertical and horizontal planes, a vertically swinging ele ment carrying a fulcrum for said member whereby the latter may be moved longitudinally in a horizontal plane, means for raising and lowering sald swinging element, means for oscillating said member vertically and a tamper carried by said member.
14. In a tamping mechanism, the combination of a guide, a vertically movable member therein, horizontally disposed arms projecting from said member and arranged in diverging relation, spaced guide bars uniting the diverging ends of said arms, a bar pivoted at one end and adapted to swing horizontally between said guide bars and said arms and a tamper carried by said horizontally swinging bar.
