Description

UNITED STATES FRANK S.- DAVIS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
' l GAN-COVER.
ivo. 897,720.
speciamaon oz Letten Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1908.
miracoli ma July n, 19m. seria no asaisc .Toall 'whom 'if may concern:
Be it known thaty I, FRANK S. Davis, a citizen of the United"L States ci' America, re siding at Detroit, 'm the county of Wvayne and State of Michigan have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Covers, of which the following is a specification, ref 'erence being had therein to the accompany ing drawings. Y
This invention relates to covers or stoppers for open tcp cares, pails or similar recep tacles, known as fctiontop cans, saine being made from metall, paper or other materials and used for holding a variety of liquids and dry articles, such as Syrups, milk, paints, oils, cereals and other merchandise` The object of this invention is to utilize the space formed by the depression within the friction rim of smch covcxs` for holding advertising matter of differentkinds, samples, accessories to tlre goods incloscd in thecan or various other articles of merchandise. To this end my invention has particular reference to means provided on the cover for retaining such' articles placed within said space, altas more folly hereinafter described i connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view' of a friction top can cover embodying 'my invention; Fig. 2 is a cross sect-ion thereof; F ig. 3 is a similar cross section showing the manner of utilizing the cover for the purpose described; Fig. 4 is a plan view of V0'. 3; Figs. 5 and 6 are other plan views slniwin" different ways of utilizing my invention; Ifig. 7 is a cross-scc tion of Fig. 5; Fig. Y@ a cross section of a slightly modified form of cover; and, Fig. 9 is a cross section showing the manner of utilizinr the cover shown in Fig. 8.
My improved friction top can cover comprises a bodyportioir a formed with the Upturned rim flange in the usual manner. This rim ilangc ar-.com'ling to my invention I provide on its upper edge with a peripheral extension composed of an outwardly standing portion c and an upturned portion The cover thus constructed constitutes a new article of manufacture, adapted to carry ont the object of my invention in the following manner: The merchandise or advertising matter which is to be rnclosed 1n the depression formed within the rim of the cover is preferably prepared to iit or fill out the depression and after placing it in, a. disk e of roper size to fit the a ertured flange sis aid over it and fastened own by inturn ing the flange d as shown in Fig. 3.
The disk e may of pa er, card board, meta-l or anyother materia and in order to facilitate the removal of the inclosed matter tearing or cutting it out. Instead of a disk,
use of a rubber ling similar to t e well known gasket, would permit the insertion as well as the removal thereof and the. cover could thus be completed for its ultimate use.
pennit, fingers, lugs or straps h 'i j as shown 1n Fig. 6 and clamped in the same manner as the disk or ring' may be used to hold it in place and it will be understood that in case of using fingers as h of flexible material, so as to bend readily they would permit the insertion as well as the removal of the article and thus the cover might also be completed before 'the other modifications within the scope of my invention which may readily suggest themselves, one being shown in Figs. 8 and 9 wherein the upturned flange d is made of such sizev that by inturning it projects within the rim and the diske may not be clamped but' merely held against outward displacement bv the flange d.
What I claim as my invention is:-'
1. A friction t-op cover' rovided with a, rim and having its entire ody within the rim depressed, the rim being formed by an upturned flange rovided with an outwardly projecting perip xeral flange forminu an extension of the upturned flange an( means held in position by said peripheral iian'ge and projecting inwardly therefrom over the top of the cover, aid means adapted to rem0vably retain merchandise or other articles within the depression of the cover.
2. A friction top cover rovided with a rim depressed, the rim being formed by an upturned iiange rovided with an outwardly proecting perip eral iiange, the same bei an extension of the upturned flange falde forming'thc top fold, an means for-retaining merchandise and othei matter within the de'- a mere rino as g in Figs. 5 and 7 may be ein-l ployed to noid the matter 1n lace and the Where the nature of the merchandise willV it may be provided along its rim `with a'lline of perfcrations f as shown in Fig. 4, or it may be provided with weakened lines for readily merchandise is placed into it. There are rim and having its entire ody wit-hin the upon itself with the mar al portion thereof pression in the cover, said means bein g held in position by engngemen between the: folds 'the peripheral flange.
3. A friction top eo'rer provided with a rim and having its entire body within the rim depressed, the rim being formed 'rj' fan .upnurned frange provide-'J with an outvrn idly projecting peripheral flange, the same being an extension of the upurned frange fol ded upon itself, the marginal portion of the extension being folded on top, and ai silplemeniary cover marginally engaging bei-wf en the folds of said periphernl flange and inel|)s ing the space within thc; depression in the cover.
4. In s friction top can, the combinati(a n Vwith Llie recessed friction cover having n cavity et' chamber for ille reefpton yof'loose' articles therein on its uppers; e, and a. 'marginal externally projecting plyofrixm offs. 20
folded upwardly and inwardly over t e supg5 .the same in place,
plemental dis-k to secure substantially es speciied. Y
In testimony whereof I sfix my signature in presence of (two witnesses.
