` ALONZO HITCHCOCK, or- NEWYQRKQN. Y.-
j j i Letters Patent No. 89,765, dated Maly 4, 1869.
p nvIPRovnMr-:NT n'nocK-BREAK'ER The Schedule referred to in'theae Letters Patent and making To alltvh/m, ttm@ concern.;V`
Be it known that I, ALoNzo Hlronoock, of New York, in the county and State of New,v York, have V,in-
vented a certain new and useful Improvement .in Rock- Breakers, whichV I call a Compound Motion Rock- Breaker; and-I do hereby'declare thatfthe lfollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, refdraw'ing, mak: ing part of this specication, andto the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to break and reduce lumps of quartz, or other material, preparing it forth'e action of a pulverzinglmill; and
` 1t 'consists of a pair oi' cams, somewhat similar to segments of a cylinder, which are operated by means of a` crank, insuch amanner that their relative and .l conj oiut action" oompressesthe material placed between their jaws or workingfacesand at the same time-turns it while under compression in a crunching manner that H the processof reductiom ToV enable others skilled inthe arts to which my invention appertains 'to make and use the same, proceed to describe its construction; and operation with reference tothe drawing. y i Y Figure 1 is asid`e elevation of the machine; 'Figure-2 isa'plan.oftl1esame;rand l i Y v Figure 3 is a geometrical diagram, representing lthe compound motion of the cams in a manner in which, Tor the purpose of illustration, ,thev proportions have :been greatly exaggerated. l
` Thesame letters refer to like parts lin the figures of the machine and the diagram.
The segmental Pcams c and b vibrate' on centres'at ythe heads c and d, whichlre retained in positionby the .screw-bolt rods `c f. 'One of the .cams is surfaces l or jaws of the cams, so that the material placed ,between them cannot escape at` the sides, and must necessarily pass `between the cams in accordance These segmental cams may be made hollow, or panelled, to reduce their weight n `any way that may be consistenti with strength,
heads at the centres of their vibration should be made as wide as the machine will conveniently permit, to
resist any .tendency to twist or cant when the material upon whichthey operate should occasion a preponderf ance of thepressure -upon one side.
for the purpose of- I will.`
parl: of the eamo. Y
The bearings on the heads pieces of steel or chilled iron, and `the cams may be l furnished with similar pieces at the ends, for thepnrpose of. reducing the friction'and the w/ear Theworkin g faces of the v jaws may be made straight or curved, and be" placed when worn. o Y Y y The crank-shaft g issupported on suitableA standards, h, and is furnished with a pair of fly-wheels, i, -and is connected at each side of the machinewith the segmental.l cams by means of the yokes k.
terfering withthe action of the yokes.
should be tted in bration of the cams are made very small in these macliines, for the purpose of obtaining a slight .butalmost ,irresistible compressire'action on the material vbetween 'furnished with anges on ytheV .ledges of the working face that lap over the other, thus enclosefthe sides and of the space between the acting and their bearing on` the tion may be'bestunderstood by referenceto the geometrical diagram.
,When the craulrpasses from the upper centre to a position one-quarter of a revolution to the right,.the cam on the right moves quicker other, as is shown by the heavy lines of the figure, and
andl both cams attain their lowermost points together, asrepi'esented in light lines.
spectively the positions and degrees of motion at the It will thus be seen that the relative motions of the cams not only compress an obstacle placed between them, the size of which may be limitejdby the lopening of an ordinary hopper placed, over the cams, but that the obstacle is turned, or twisted, andcompressed, or crunched as it isforced through between the jaws of the same by the revolutions of the crankshaft.
.I claim as my invention-4 ALONZO HITOHOOOK.
ri/'itnessesz i S. Jonas GRAIN, y WM. KnMnn Enum may consist of separate itted with vshoes 'that can be re'' The pin passing through one of the cams, and upon thatthe camsmay be adjusted,
As the throw o f thev cranks, and the consequent ,vi-I l the cams, the compound character of thevdouble 'moand further than the l on moving the crankto the lower centre, the cam on v I the left moves quicker,
The dotted lines andthe broken linesA represent re-l third quarter and at the completion ofthe revolution.
