BUGGY-TONGUE.

Be it known that I, THOMAS Roscoe BROYLES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Marshfield, in the county of lVebster and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in BuggvTongues, of which the following is a speci'ication.

This invention relates to a buggy tongue and more especially to the manner of bracing the tongue and securing the same to a vehicle.

The invention consists in the novel fea tures of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the tongue and certain supporting bands.

In these drawings 1 represents a tongue over the inner end portion of which is socured a metal strap 2 which overlaps the upper and lower faces of the rear end portion of said tongue. This strap is offset upon its upper face as shown at 2", and upon the lower side of the tongue the strap is offset as shown at 3 and 3. A. metal support is bent into a U-shape and is also bent upon itself, and the free end portions of the Ushaped member thus formed are bent into coils 4 This supporting member 4 has its bow por tion up-set as shown at 5, said up-set portion embracing the sides and top of the tongue 1 and extending beneath the offset portion 2" of the strap 2. This bow portion forms the upper strip of the U-shaped member and after being bent to form one of the coils 4 is brought back as a lower member 6 .being spaced from the end portion of the member 4 by a pin 6 The under strip 6 is then bent transversely across the bow portion forming a cross brace 7 which passes between the under face of the tongue and the offset portion 3 of the strapand is then carried back under the other end portion of the U-shaped mem ber from which it is also spaced by a pin 6 and terminates in the other coil 4 A strip 8 rests under the bow portion of the member 4 and passes between the tongue and the off set portion 3 of the strap 2 and has its end portions secured to the member 4 at the points where the said member is bent to form the cross brace 7. are, of course, employed to hold the parts together wherever they may be found necessary. A tongue support thus formed will possess suitable strength combined with a degree of elasticity which will enable it to resist the twisting and side strains to which a connection of this kind is subjected.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a Vehicle tongue, a metal strip embracing the rear end of the tongue and having offset portions, a U- shape memberbent upon itself to crossits own bow portion, said member having its bow portion passing through an offset portion of the strip upon the top of the tongue and having its cross member passing through an offset portion beneath the tongue, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination with a tongue, a metal strip passing over and under the rear portion of the tongue and secured thereto, said strip having an offset portion above the tongue and one beneath the tongue, the second mentioned portion being to the rear of the first, and a U-shape member having its bow portion up-set to pass over the tongue and beneath the first mentioned offset, said U-shape member being bent back upon itself and carried transversely across the bow portion forming a brace passing beneath the tongue and through the second mentioned ofiset portion of the strip, and then bent back to its remaining free end, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination with a vehicle tongue, of a U-shape member bent at its ends to form coils, said U-shape member having its bow portion passing over the top of the tongue, and being bent back from one coil to the other, said bent back portion extending beneath the end portions of the U-shape member and being bent to cross the bow portion and beneath the tongue, and a curved strip secured to the under face of said U-shape member and carried beneath the bow portion, passing under the tongue, as and for the purpose set forth.
