To al( iii/om 'it may eoliefril.'y
Be it4 known that we, 'l`uo.\i.\s J. Bim'. residing at littsburg` in the eoimti' ol' .\lle glieli)r and State ol Pennsylvania, aud (illinoN (1'. Siiaciianitoao, residing at Youngstown, iti tliewoniitiv ol' .\lalioniug and State otI (lhio, Citizens oll the United States, haveiuvei'ited or diseovered eertaiu nee. and usel'irl improvements in Shear .\leelninisn'i, ol' whieh iiui'iroveinents the lollowirg is a speeiiieatioii. The invention deserihed herein relates to certain improvements iutliat elass or kind 0f meehanisin lwoa u as "lli'iug shears" whieh are moved along nith the :utiele to he sheared during the shearingl operation.
The-invention is hereinafter iuore fully described and elaiined.
In the. accompanying drawings forming a. part of this speei'liiaition Figure t is an end elevationl of a shear ineelniiiisui embodying our improvemeuts'j` Fig. is ,a seet ioual elevation of the same on a plane indieated by the line IiP-II Fig. l Figs. 2% and 4 are seetional detail views showing the positionsl ol' the Ablades during and subsequent to the shearing operation; and Fig. 5 is a seetioual i etail vietw showing a means for swinging blade du ring shearing and for shit'tine' and restoring it-to operative position.
.in the pi'aetiee. of our inventionl the shearoperatiug inet-lianisms are mounted iu a suitable l'i'auie or housing l, whieh is plaeed -in the line ol' leed of the. artiele to be eut. 'l`his l'rauie or housing is provided with guides 2 and It arranged omo wposite sides of the line ol movement. oi the billet rod, ete., .Heads or bloeks 4 and 5 are movabiir mounted in these guides, whieh are so arranged relative. to the line ot movement of the billet or other artiele that the lilies of movement of the. blades 6 and 7 earx'ied by the heads will biseet eaeh other and the line of movementot the artiele at approximately the. saine point. As will be readily understood by those skilled in the art, either or both of the. guides may be arranged in a plane. inteiseeting the line olf movement of `the billet orotlier article.. In the eonstrnetion shown .one of the guide-wa s as Blis t. ie
' arallei or approximately paralle with ine of movement ofthe billetI while the other ide 2 is arranged at an nente. angle. thereto, o that as the l'iead 4issliil'ted in the'diree- -tion of movement of the billet', it will approach the latter. l
loeliing' the 'l'he shear heads maj." be reeipi'oeatedby any suitable means adapted to eaiise the heads to m'ove svnehronousli'. ln the eonstruetiou shonii the heads are eonnee-ted by links S to arms il, seeiu'ed to a shaft lt). 'l`ht` 'upper ends olI the ai'nis are eouuei'ted to a. eross-head 1l mounted in guides l2, said eross-head bein; reeiprmated b ani' snitable means as the lluid `pressiii'e eyliiider l.
ln oi'der that there may not be any interfereuee with the onward movement. of the billet or other ai'tiele. al'tei' a shearing has been etl'eeted and: during the return move.'- ment ol' the heads and I3, the eutting blade- \\'hieh interseets the line of movement of the.l illi.\t, is so mounted on its head as to be eapable of movement ont of the path of the. billet. in the eonstruetion shown the shear-blade (i is seeured to a. bloek 14 piv' otally mounted in the head '-t, so as to he eapahle of swinging upwards` and in the direction of the. naive-ment of the billet while the bloek and shear blade are so eonstrueted and supported in the head as to iiorinallvl hang in operative relation to the shear blade 7, and ean -be shifted b v the billet after a. eut. has been completed. it. is preferred to emploi' means for holding the bloek and shear m operative iosition :md to shift them out of the path o movement ot' the` billet.. A eonvenient eonstruetion '[or that purpose is shown -in l"ig. .5, and eonsists in providing the pivoted. bloek with an angular arm l5 having a piu projeetng into a groove. 1T in the side. of theV trame or housing. As the head moves in a. direetiou to eut a. billet. t-hepinnioves along the part. a of the. groove holding the bloe-k and shear blade. in operative position. As the head 4 appioaehes the end of its forward movement', the pin will move. along the portion b of the groove and thereby turn t-he block and shear blade out. of the path of movement of the billet. During the return or baek movement of the head, the pin moves along the. portion e of the. groove and, rradually restores the block and shear blade 1onormal or operative position.
We elaini herein as our invention:
1'. A shear meehanism having in combination guide ways having their guiding snrfaces in converging planes, eutter carrying heads mounted on said ways and means for reciprocating said heads. l
2. A sliear'meehanisni having in combination cutter-carrying heads, means for reciproceting the heads, means for causing' one 'of the heads to reciprocate in a lane intersecting the line of movement o the article to be sheered, one of the heads hevin its cutter movably connected thereto, a oek for .holding the cutter in operetive position and means operative on the movement of the heed for shifting the cutter.
3. A sheer mechanism .having in combination cutter-carrying heads7 one of said heads having its cutter movebly connected thereto, means for reciprocating the heads, means for Causing one of the heads to reep recate in a plane intersectingy the line ol" movement of the article to be sheered, and means'opemtive by the movement of the heed having the movable cutter, for lookingl the cutter during,r the forward 1novement of the heed end for .shifting the cutter 20 from end heck to operative position during the movement of the heed after the sheeringr operation.
.ln testimony whereof, we have hereunto set our hands.
