Be it known that 1, EVA MoGEE SHIVELY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boulder, in the county of Boulder and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in \Vaists, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The purpose of the invention is to provide a waist that is a complete substitute for a corset so far as the appearance of the figure is concerned, and which can be worn without any injurious effects, since no steels, bone, or featherbone are employed, and absolutely no stiff material.

It is also a purpose of the invention, irrespective of the absence of the above-named. factors, to provide a waist that is a substitute for a corset, so 'llexibly reinforced at its lower portion that when fastened in front it pro duces a close-fitting, sustaining back and front, likewise fitting snugly to the lower portion of the abdomen as high up as the umbilical region.

. It is a further purpose of the invention to so construct the corset-waist that the front portion above the umbilicus is kept absolutely free and may be entirely unfastened without changing the fit atthe back, and to rovide a bust support that is an integral ortion of the garment. I

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the fig ures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved waist upon a form viewed from the front; and Fig. 2 is a rear view of the waist also-shown upon a form.

The main object of the invention is to provide a waist of the character described that will require no circular constriction whatsoever, relieving from pressure the important organs found situated beneath the front aspect of the body as far down as the pelvis.

A represents the body of the waist, which is made of fabric or like pliable material, and is cut to extend well over the hips and over the abdomen, and as far down at the back as desired, and the said body A is provided with shoulder straps 10, whereby the weight of the Specification of Letters Patent.

' waist is sustained from the shoulders, and the said waist is made to open at the front, as shown at 11 in Fig. 1, and the edges at said opening are usually connected by buttons, or their equivalents, but the fastening devices are preferably non-metallic.

At the upper front portion of the body A, a shirred insertion 12 is provided, forming an outwardly extending yielding panel adapted as a full front when used, and said panel may be made to extend approximately to the waist line if desired, or may be omitted. The lower portion of the garment is reinforced and rendered sustaining by the addition thereto of strips of webbing placed in predetermined order. The strips of Webbing may be described in the'following order, namely, an upper one 13, an intermediate one 14, and a lower one 15. The upper strip of webbing 13 is carried up at the back to form a peak 16 approximately at the pit of the back, or above the waist line, and this strip 13 is then carried downwardly and forwardly, meeting at the front opening 11 at a point below the waist line, or below the umbilicus, but the forward portion of this upper webbing 13 may be carried further upward if so desired. The meeting portions of the webbing 13 at the front, are shown at 17 in Fig. 1.

With reference to the intermediate webbing 14, it is also carried up at the back above the waistline to form a peak 18, which is below the peak 16 formed at the back portion of the upper webbing 13, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2, but the said peak 18 is always above the waist line. This intermediate webbing 14 is carried downward and forward, following the upper or true waist line at the hips, and the ends of the webbing are brought together at the extreme lower portion of the front opening of the waist, as is shown at 19 in Fig. 1.

The lower webbing 15 is peaked. downwar-dly at the back in the same vertical line with the upwardly extending peaks 18 and 16 of the other w'ebbings, as is shown in Fig. 2, and from the peak 20 of the lower webbing 15, said webbing is carried upward and then downward and forward, smoothly over the hips, and its forward end portions 21, are carried down to the forward lower edge of the waist at each side of the point of connection or junction 19 of the forward ends of the intermediate webbing 14. The space at the front of the waist is further strengthened by l means of short strips of webbing 22, that are located between the front portions of the up- I body,

all of the tapes extending downwardly per webbing 13 and the intermediate webbing and forwardly in front of the body below the 14, following the downward and forward inclination of both of them. The webbing 22 and the front portions of the webbings l4 and 15, he over the front aspect'of the pelvis, entirely, thus absolutely protecting the abdomen and likewise the muscles at the back, yet rendering the garment exceedingly comfortable, without any undue stiffness. The back of the garment is further strengthened by means of arc stays 24 and 25, that are re versely curved and lie in pairs at each side of a central vertical stay 26. The are stays 25 are preferably made to pass under the rear portion of the lower webbing 15 and extend from the bottom rear edge of the garment to the upper webbing 14, as is shown in Fig. 2. In the construction of this corset-waist, the reinforcing webbing is so placed that when the garment is worn the said webbing will be over the bony portion of the body, missing the lower free portion of the ribs, and lies along and just above and below the crest of the ilium on the anterior aspect of the body. The improved garment is not only a substitute for a corset, but while in use it renders it possible to restore misplaced organs, and permits free expansion of the thorax, thereby making it possible to secure normal respiration and circulation in those so affected, and also acts to prevent such occurrences.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. A corset-waist consisting of a body of pliable material, open at the front, and a plurality of tapes arranged one above the other,

extending above and below the waist line at the central portion of the back, and down wardly below the waist line at its front central portion, one of said tapes crossing said body at its hip section substantially on the waist line, and one above and the other below the waist line at the same point.

2. A corset-waist consisting of a body of pliable material, open at the front, and tapes above the other, extending, sundry above and others below, the waist line at the central portion of the back of the waist line to approximately the central lower portion of the body, and pliable stays reversely curved, and located at each side of the center of the back, extending from a tape above the waist line to the lower portion of said back.

In a corset waist, a body of pliable material provided with shoulder-straps and an open front, and a lurality of tapes arranged one above the ot er, two of which extend pointedly upward at the rear central portion of the said body above the waist-line, and one pointedly downward at the same portion of the body, one of said tapes crossing the hip section substantially on the waist line, and one above and the other below the waist line, and all of them extending downwardly and forwardly at the front below the waistline, and terminating approximately at the front opening of the bod 4. In a corset waist, a body of pliable material provided with shoulder-straps and an open front, and tapes arranged one above the other, two of which extend pointedly upward at the rear central portion of the said body above the waist line, and one pointedly downward at the same portion of the body, all of said tapes extending downwardly and forwardly at the front below the waist line, and terminating approximately at the front opening of the body, and a flexible stay tape located at the central lower portion of the back, extending from the pointed portion of the lower upwardly-extending tape to the bottom of the said back, and auxiliary flexible stay tapes reversely curved and located at each side of the central stay tape, which auxiliary stay tapes also extend from the lower of the upwardly-extending encircling tapes to the bottom edge of the said body.
