LANTERN-HOLDER.

Bc it known that I, CHARLES A. KNAPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheridan, in the count-r of Montcalm and Stateol" Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lantern- Holders, of which the following is a speciii cation.

My invention relates to improvements in lantern holders, and its objects are; first, -to provide a lantern holder that may be used to secure and carry a lantern on a. rim of' a mil, a butt-011, a nail, a dashboard 0l a uggy or other convenient or desired place,

and, second, to provide a lantern holder, as

above. stat-ed, that will be light, cheap and easy to handle.. I attain' these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanyiupr drawing in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pail withv my device attached. 'Fig'. 2 is a' top plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of a pail with'a lantern supported in the device. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the device showing a modified form of clamp for securingr it to the tubes of a lantern, and Fig. 5 is a top plan of the device showing the curves that engage the" lantern tubes curved outward to engage the outer surfaces of the tubes.

A represents a pail ,to which the lantern holder is to be attached. The holder is made of a single piece of wire bent to form the two upper arms B B and two lower arms B B which eaeli have a curve C C at the outer end and are connected, the u per arms with the lower arms, by upright "ars D, and the lower arms B extend back to the surface of the pail, or whatever other suporting,r object it may be secured to, and are lient up to form a second pair ot vertical posts or bars, D', that extend up to the upper arms B B and are wound around these bars, as indicated at 1) b', with the ends extending into the coil l), as indicated in Figs. 2 and 5. erable distance above the level of the coils b b so that the bail of a pail may pass between the sides when the holder is supported on a pail, as indicated in Figs. l and 3, and to secure it to a pail the loops or bea-rings E are forced down inside of the pail wit-'h the bail a between the sides of the loop E, as shown in Figs; 1, 2 and 3, and theupright Abars D are made to bear upon the outer surface of the support so that the support may hold the lantern F irinly to place, and yet may be readily removed, if desired. It will be readily seen that when this holder is thus attached to a pail it acts, not only as a support for a lantern, but, also, as a support for the bail a of the pail, thus rendering it convenient to set the pail down and take it up, when desired, without danger of the bail falling down upon the rim of tbe pail in. position to be lnconvenient of access. when the operator again desires to take up and carry the pail.

I do not deem it necessary to illustrate the holder supported upon the dashboard of a buggy or cutter as the process is exactly the. same as with a pail except that no bail would be shown passing through fthe loop E.

I greatly prefer the use of a holder having in position to bear u on the inner surfaces of the tubes G of the antern, as indicated in Fig. .2 and shown in Fig. 3, :is there is less danger of their becoming detached from the tubes than when they are constructed to bear upon the outer surfaces of the tubes, as indicated in Fig. 3.

and many other positions a workman may be placed in.

I have shown the modified form of holder in Fig. 4, with its detachable clamp C as an example of the various modifications that may e made in the construction of my device wthout departing from the scope oT my invention.
