Description

No. 896,464. PATENTED AUG. 18, 1908.
E. T. ROBINSON. COMBINED SA$H HOLDER AND SASH LIFT.
APPLICATION FILED PEB.11. 1908.
UNITED PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD T.-ROBINSON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO ST. LOUIS GAR GOMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION.
COMBINED SASH-HOLDER AND SASI-I-LIFT.
Patented Aug. 18, 1908 Serial No. 415,360.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. RoBINsoN,
a citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Sash- I-Iolder and Sash-Lift, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a combined device for use in holding sashes and more particularly to those of car windows and a sash lift directly associated with the sash holder in order that the sash holder may be operated and the sash lift engaged by one end.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sash holder in which the bolt is so constructed as to permit of its entering into the bottom rail of a window sash to operate in said bottom rail while the housing or case of the holder is located at the inner face of said bottom rail.
Figure I is an elevation of a fragment of a window with my sash holder and lift applied thereto and with a portion of the window frame shown in section. Fig. II is a section taken on irregular line IIII, Fig. I. Fig. III is a rear elevation of the sash holder and lift. Fig. IV is an end elevation of the sash holder and lift.
In the accompanying drawings: A designates part of a jamb of a window or window post to which are secured the outer and-inner stops B and C that are separated to provide a sash runway. Pockets are provided at the back of said sash'runway for the reception of the sash holder bolt and these pockets may be furnished in any suitable manner, such as by the employment of pocket disks D that are set into the jamb A, as seen in Figs. I and II.
E is the bottom rail of a window sash adapted to operate in the runway between the stops B and C, and to provide for the sash holder bolt operating within this sash so that it may be seated in the pockets in the window amb, I produce a channel Fin the bottom rail of the sash and provide a side opening into this channel by slotting said rail at its inner side, as seen at G in full lines Fig. I.
1 designates a sash lift of hook form that is secured to the sash rail E and 2 is the housing of my sash holder. This housing is of box shape and is integral with said lift. In the end wall of the housing that adjoins the sash lift is an opening 3.
- 4 is a bolt that is slidably mounted in the lower part of the housing 2. This bolt has an offset arm 5 that extends laterally from the main body of the bolt into the channel F in the sash rail E and which carries a finger 6 that is operable in said channel and extends through the end of the rail, or in other words, through the side of the sash in order that it will enter into the sash runway and be susceptible of being seated in the pockets in the window amb. The bolt 4 is provided with a lug 7 which extends upwardly from its body within the housing 2 and it is surrounded by a spring 8 by which the bolt is normally projeoted toward the window amb A.
9 designates a retracting lever that is pivoted at 10 to the housing 2 and is provided with a finger 11 that is adapted to engage the lug 7 vat its side opposite to that at which the spring 8 is located. The lever 9 is provided with a handle arm 12 which extends through the slot 3 in the housing 2 and is located in front of the lift 1 and beneath the hook of said lift.
It will be seen that the herein described sash holder provides a means for holding sashes in which the locking bolt is entirely out of View. When the sash is to be elevated or lowered the lift 1 and the handle arm of the bolt retracting lever 9 may be readily engaged by the fingers of one hand so that the locking bolt of the sash holder may be retracted and held retracted while the window sash is being adjusted as may be desired.
I claim:
In a sash holder, a housing, a spring controlled locking bolt slidably mounted in said housing and having a finger olfset from'the body of the bolt and located exterior of said housing, a lug carried by said locking bolt, and a retracting lever pivotally mounted in said housing and having a lug for engagement with the lug of said locking bolt and a handle extending to the exterior of said housing, substantially as set forth.
EDWARD T. ROBINSON.
