No. 896,258. PATENTED AUG. 18, 1908.

POULTRY NEST.
APPLICATION HLED MAB.24,1908.

wimax@ @limp v "UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE.
SIMEoN WELCH, or MERKEL, TEXAS.
POULTRY-NEST.
To all whomy it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMEON WELCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merkel, in the county of Taylor and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Poultry Nest, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a nest box for poultry the object of which is to provide -a strong, simple structure containing compartments for nests in which hens may lay their eggs. These compartments or nests are separated by a transverse passage-way there being openings from said passage-way into the compartments. There is also provided means for open-ing the compartments to remove the eggs and easily and thoroughly clean the nests from dirt and vermin.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the structure open for the removal of eggs or cleaning and Fig. 2 a vertical cross sectional view of the same on the line 2 2." Fig. 3 is a erspective view of a modied construction il ustrating a connected series of nests..
Similar reference numerals are used for like parts in all figures.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the nest box as a whole and comprises an elongated rectangular structure with a fiat bot-A tom or floor 2, vertical front and back walls 3 and 4 respectively, and vertical end walls 5 which are made higher at a point preferably in front of the center, from which point the upper edges of the ends slope downward to the front and rear edges for sup orting the roof of the structure. The rear s ope of the roof is made of a board or boards 6 immovably secured to the nest box, to which is hinged at the eak of the roof, a door 7 that, when closed, orms the front slope.
Within the structure are placed transverse partitions 8 dividing the interior into three compartments, a central passageway 9 and a wider nest box 10 on each side of the passageway. Openings 11 are made in the rear of each partition for the fowls to pass into and out of the nests. The nest box 1 is supported above the ground by corner legs 12 of Specication of Letters Patent.

any length which preferably project into the.
box and extend nearly to the roof, thereby giving the structure greater strengthas the sides of the box are nailed to them. A step 13 projects in front of the passage-way for the convenience of the hens entering the nests. The door 7 is held closed by any'suitable fastening, a hook 14 and eye 15 is represented in the drawing, but a lock may be applied where there is danger of the nests being robbed. Ventilation is secured by holes 16 bored in the front, back and ends of the box. The door 7 is kept closed except at such times as is necessary to remove the eggs and to clean out the nests.
It is to be noted that the nest box as described although complete in itself, may
rear walls, the floor and the roof endwise and place therein partitions similar to those described. It is preferred however to make the units separate as they are more easily handled and can, in many cases, be disposed to better advantage than a large structure containing many nests.
Having described my invention what T claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. A nest box comprising a roofed structure having a part of its roof hinged to form a door, and transverse partitions therein having openings through the rear edges thereof, said partitions dividing the nest box into a central passage-way and two nests communicating with said passage-way through the openings in said partitions.
2. A nest box comprising a roofed structure containing a straight transverse passage-way and a nest on each side, partitions separating the passage-way from said nests and having openings therein at the rear to form entrances to said nests, and a door forming a part of the roof throughwhich access may be had to said nests.
3. Anest box comprising a rectangular boxlike structure the front, rear and end walls having Ventilating holes therethrough, a two part roof said parts sloping in opposite directions, one of said parts being fixed and the other part hinged thereto, transverse partitions within said nest box dividing the same l into passage-ways and nests, each passage.
way communicating with a, nest on either side through an opening in the rear of said partitions, and supporting legs at the corners 5 of the nest vbox extending thereinto and downwardly below the bottom thereof.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
