To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOLLY M. VERPLANoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in molds.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved mold for use in the manufacture of metal wheels, particularly such as wheelbarrow or agricultural wheels, which enables the ra id and economical production of wheels having very desirable features, such as possessed by the wheel illustrated and described in my application for Letters Patent filed concurrently herewith, Serial No. 404,486.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the structure of my improved mold in position for the pouring of the metal, parts of the mold, and one of the spokes, being broken away to show its arrangement upon the spokes. Fig. 2 is a central cross section taken on a line corresponding to lines 22 of Figs. 1 and 3, the bushing of the hub and the connecting ins for the mold sections being shown in full lines. Fig. 3 is a central cross section taken on aline corresponding to lines 3-3 of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a cross section taken on a line corresponding to lines 44 of Figs. 1 and 2, showing details of the connections for the mold sections. Fig. 5 is a cross section taken on a line corresponding to lines 55 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of ,the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring tothe drawing, in the manufacture of .wheels by the aid of my improved mold, I first secure the spokes 1 to the rim 2.
The spokes are of metal and the rim is also preferably of metal. The hub is cast upon, or embeds'the inner ends of the spokes. My improvedmold is formed of two parts or sections, 33, chambered to form a hub of the desired size 'and shape. The meeting edges of the mold walls are provided with radial grooves 4. These grooves are adapted to register when the parts are brought together to receive the ends of the spokes 1, the inner ends of which project into the mold so that when the metal is poured therein, it flows around and embeds the same, thereby securing them to the hub.
The mold sections or parts are clamped upon the ends of the spokes preferably by means of the pins 5, which project inwardly from one of the parts of the mold, the other part being provided with holes adapted to receive the pins, as clearly appears from the drawing. These pins are provided -with transverse key holes adapted to receive the tapered keys 6, so that they may be securely clamped upon the ends of the spokes, not only properly supporting the mold on the spokes, but also effectively closing the parts of the mold together. As the spoke rails are regularly arranged, the mold is effectively centered on the wheel merely by arranging it upon the spokes.
A suitable pouring hole, as 7, is provided for the mold. At each end of the mold, I
provide inwardly projecting pins 8. These pins are tubular and their inner ends are conical so that they readily receive and center the hub bushing, as 9. This hub bushing is preferably of the form described in my application for Letters Patent, hereinbefore referred to in which the bushing is made up of two tubes rolled up from sheet metal, the joints of the tube being arranged to overlap, and the inner tube projecting beyond the end of the outer. These supporting pins serve as vents for the mold, thereby preventing blowing during the casting operation.
By thus forming and arranging the parts, I
secure a mold which enables the rapid production of Wheels, and at the same time,the
hub of the wheel is properly centered and the bushing efiectively centered and secured therein.
While the method of securing the parts of the mold together, as described, is preferred by me on account of the convenience with which they may be connected or disconnected, I am aware that the connection might be made by other means and satisfactory re, sults be secured.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew and desire to secure'by Letters Patent is:
1. A mold for hubs comprisingtwo parts or sections, provided with radial grooves in meeting edges of their walls, said grooves being adapted to register to receive the spokes of a wheel when the parts are connected, and with tubular .pins .proj ecting Leentrally into the mold chamherwat the ends thereof, the inner ends of said pins being ta pered .andada-pted to receive a hub bushing,
inwardly projecting connecting pins having transverse holes therethrough (carried by one of said parts, the other part being perfo- 3 rated to receive said connecting pins; and;
tapered keys for said pins whereby the parts may be clamped upon the spokes and upon,
a hub bushing;
2. A mold for hubs comprising two parts;
verse holes therethrough carried by one of r j said parts, the other part being perforated to receive said connecting pins; and tapered keys for said pins whereby the parts may be clamped upon the spokes and upon a hub bushing.

with tubular pins projecting centrally into the mold chamber at the ends thereof, the
inner ends of said pins being tapered and adapted to receive a hub bushing;
4. A mold for hubscom-prising two parts or sections, provided with radial grooves in meeting edges of their walls, said grooves being adapted to register to receive, the
spokes of a wheel when the parts are connected, and with tubular pins projecting centrally into the mold chamber at the ends I thereof, the inner ends of said pins being adapted to receive a hub bushing.
