CARL H. SCHADE, OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA.
' TRAMMEL.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL H. SCHADE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trammels, of which the following is a specification, reference be ing had thereinto the accompanying drawmg.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in trammels and has for its main object toprovide a trammel which may be used for all the purposes of an ordinary trammel, and whichmay also be used as a plumb board, or surface gage.
The invention resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully'described and then particularly claimed, and in describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, wherein like numerals of reference will be employed to indicate like parts throughout the different views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the use of my improved trammel as a plumb board, Fig. 2 is a view in elevation showing the trammel stick partly broken away, one of the terminal points being provided with the adjustable centering member, the view show ing the other trammel point removed from its holder and a pencil or similar marker placed in the holder. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the trammel point holder, showing a part of the trammel point in dotted lines. Fig. 4 is a central vertical sectional view of the trammel point holder, showing the trammel point in elevation. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view of the trammel point holder, and Fig. 6 is a central vertical sectional view of one of the adjustable centering devices, showing a part of one of the trammel points.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide an adjustment for the trammel points without changing the position of the latter on the trammel bar, and in order to accomplish this, I provide a novel form of tram-. mel point holder, which will first be described.
The holder comprises a plate or member 7 I provided at its upper end with an inwardlyprojecting arm 8 which is provided with a threaded boss that receives a thumb-screw 9 the said screw being provided as in the usual Specification of Letters Patent.

practice in connection with thumb screws used for this purpose with a button 10 on its inner end.
At its lower end the plate 7 is provided with two inwardly projecting lugs or aws 11 adapted to clamp with the lower edge of the trammel bar 12 as seen in Fig. 2 of the drawand having a hollow shank 17 projecting through an opening provided therefor in the holder plate 7, the inner end of the shank be ing flanged as shown at 18 so as to secure the plate 16 and the sleeve to the holder plate 7, and permit the complete revolution of the plate 16 and sleeve 14 on the holder plate 7. I In order to secure the plate 16 and sleeve 14 at any desired adjustment I employ a clamp screw 19 which is mounted in a boss 20 on the plate 16, the inner end of the screw impinging the plate 7, as clearly seen in Fig. 5 of the drawings. In order to, secure the trammel point 15 at any desired position in the sleeve 14, I employ a clamp screw 21 which is mounted in a boss 22 on the sleeve 14, the inner end of such clamp screw impinging the trammel point 1 1, as clearly seen in Fig. 5 of the drawings[ The blunt end of the trammel point 15 is provided with a threaded shank 23, and the said trammel point is also provided adjacent its blunt end with an annular groove 24 and an opening 25 extending transversely through the trammel point, the object of which will presently appear.
The threaded shank 23 is provided on the trammel point in order to permit of the securing thereto of an adjustable centering device 26, somewhat cone-shape in form as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 6 of the drawings.
The manner of using the trammel point with two of them attached to the trammel bar or one trammel point and a pencil or marker 27, as illustrated in Fig. 2, will bev clearly evident to those skilled in the art. In this particular connection, it is believed that it is only necessary to call attention to the fact that the plate 16 and the sleeve 14 are not limited in the adjustment which may be effected, but being completely rotatable on the holder plate 7, the trammel points can clamped on an ordinary pocket rue the debe placed at any position desired, and may also be adjusted in the sleeve 14 to any desired position. However, I desire to call attention to the fact that by providing the trammel point 15 with the threaded shank 23, I provide thereby means by which the centering device 26 may be secured to the trammel point, and this centering device may be used either in the manner shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings or in the manner shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. Applied to the trammel point in the manner shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, it will be observed that the knob 26 of the centering device may be placed in an opening or recess, thus alining the axis of the trammel point with the axis of such opening or recess, and when the centering device is placed on the trammel point in the manner as shown in Fig. 6, it provides a means for placing the trammel point axially in line with a bolt, by placing the cup end of the centering device over the nut of the bolt, or over the head of a bolt, as will be obvious.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, I have shown how the trammel as employed by me may be advantageously used as a plumb board. It is for this purpose that I provide the trammel points with the annular groove 24 and the transverse opening 25. In practice, it is preferably desirable to make the opening'25 in one of the trammel points larger in diameter than the opening in the other trammel point. The trammel point having the smaller diameter opening 25 will have the plumb line 28 secured thereto, and this plumb line will be passed through the open ing 25 in the other trammel point, the plumb line 28 having the bob 29 suspended there from. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the centering devices 26 are presumed to be placed over the heads or nuts of bolts in the wall or construction line 30 illustrated. In this connection, it is entirely immaterial whether the trammel stick 12 be in a vertical line or not, and in this view the trammel is shown adapted for a plumb with the trammel stick out of the vertical line, the supposition being that the trammel stick in the position shown is the position in which it was last used and no adjustment of the trammel stick being necessary in order to adapt the device for use as a plumb board.
It will be observed that the trammel point holders being readily detachable from the trammel stick, may be used on an ordinary pocket rule and that any trammel stick may be improvised for use in connection with the trammel points should the trammel stick become broken. When the trammel oints are vice may be used in the place of dividers, wherein a mechanic may have his trammels and not the dividers.
Owing to the fact that the adjustment of the trammel points is a universal one, the holders may be applied to any improvised bar, and the trammel point still kept vertical.
By the use of the centering device 26 it will be observed that I am enabled to scribe a circle from the end of a shaft or any device of similar character. The trammel points may be readily reversed, owing to their universal adjustment, and it will therefore be noted that I am able to scribe a circle from a point on the floor to a circle on the ceiling or vice versa. In fact, owing to the universal adjustment of the trammel points by the construction shown and illustrated, the uses to which the device may be put are practically unlimited.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a trammel, a trammel point h'older comprising a holder plate having jaws at one end and an arm at the other end, a thumbscrew mounted in said arm, said screw and jaws constituting means to clamp the holder plate to a trammel stick, a trammel point receiving sleeve'completely mounted on-said plate and rotatable in a complete circle thereon, means for securing the sleeve in adjusted position, a trammel point removably mounted in said sleeve, and means for securing said trammel point in adjusted position in the sleeve.
2. In a trammel, a trammel point provided at one end with a threaded shank, and a centering member adapted to be detachablyconnected with said shank, said centering member having one end cup-shape in form and having its other end provided with a knob apertured to receive the threaded shank of the trammel point.
3. In a trammel, a trammel point provided at one end with a threaded shank, and a reversible centering member adapted to be detachably connected with said shank, said centering member being cup-shape on one end and having a knob on the other end.
4. In a trammel, a trammel point, and a reversible centering member adapted to be detachably engaged with one end of said point, said centering member being cup-shape on one end and having a knob on the other end, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CARL H. SCHADE.
