To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH C. DANA, at present residing at Concord, in the county of MiddleseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Artists Work Rest or Holder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is in the nature of an appliance, which, though more especially adapted for artists or draftsmens uses, is also adapted for use as a book rest, and the said invention has for its object to provide an appliance of the character stated, of a simple and economical construction, in which the parts are especially designed for conveniently supporting the artists canvas, drawing board or other object on which he may desire to work, and for sustaining the brushes, pencils and other paraphernalia adjacent the work, for convenient handling, and for being quickly stored in a compact manner when the appliance is not to be use In its subordinate features, my invention comprises a vertically adjustable stand or supporting leg, a special form of table mounted on the upper end of the stand having drawers, slidable into the opposite ends thereof, one of the drawers having compart ments for receiving different articles, such as ink, pencils, a hinged cover for the said drawer, having means for conveniently sustaining the brushes, the paint tubes, etc. in a substantially vertical position adjacent one end of the table when it is raised up, means being also included in the construction of the said drawer for supporting the brushes in their proper positions on the hinged member when the latter is closed down and the drawer is shoved in under the table, other means in the nature of a rest or support hinged to the front end of the table that forms the work support, and which is disposed at right an les to the end drawers, and that is combined with a rack mechanism, and a sustaining bail mounted on the table that engages rack members on the hinged member for holding the said hinged member to its adjusted positions.

In its still more subordinate features, my invention consists in certain details of construction and peculiar combination of parts, all of which will be hereinafter fully eX- plained, specifically ointed out in the appended claims and il ustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which igure 1, is a perspective view of my invention, the several parts being adjusted for use. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section on the line 22 on Fig. 3 of the table with the drawers thereof closed, the easel or hinged holder being shown elevated. Fig. 3, is a cross section of the table and easel on the line 3+3 on Fig. 2, and Fig. 1, is a detail view of the easel and bail and rack devices, hereinafter referred to. Fig. 5, is a detail perspective view of an improved supplementary study holder.

In the practical arrangement, my invention embodies a tripod form of base a from which rises a hollow standard a that receives the pendent leg or rod 1;, and which is adjustably held in the standard by the clamp screw 5, see Fig. 2. On the upper end of the rod 6 is clamped a table or top member C to which the front and rear pendent members c-c are secured and which are joined by the cross pieces c c c that form the supports for the drawers 1 and 2 that slide at the opposite ends under the table, see Fig. 2.

The drawer 1 is of the ordinary type, is lo cated preferably at the left hand end of the table (see Fig. 1) and it preferably has one or more compartments 10 for holding ink or other articles. The other drawer 2 has a hinged top 20, that folds down, covers the drawer, and to slide under the top C; it also has its hinged end 20 arranged to rest against a cross cleat 21 on the outer upper edge of the drawer so that when swung up, the said top 20 will rest in a vertical position, see Fig. 1 with its under face disposed convenient to the artist and for sustaining the brushes and paint tubes, the said under side of the top 20 has side cleats 20 the lower ends of which join with a cross cleat or rest member 2O that has a series of apertures 20 for receiving the brush handles 22, the said member 20 also forming a convenient rest for paint tubes and other small artists accessories.

For holding the brushes from dropping down onto the bottom of the drawer when the top 20 is closed down, a wire bail piece 23 is secured to the bottom of the said drawer crosswise thereof, upon which the upper ends of the brushes rest as shown by dotted lines on Fig. 2.

Combined with the means for conveniently holding the artists brushes and other accessories, is an easel or. holder 3 that consists of a rectangular frame hinged at 30 to a cleat 31 secured on the front up er edge of the table 2, the lower or hinged en of the frame having a Figs. 2 and 4, and this bail pieceengages with the racks 4040, it being held from falling back and out of a close relation with the racks by the bails 41, which also serve to hold the bail 50 in convenient position at all times for readily adjusting the pitch or angle'of the V easel 3.

From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the complete construction and the advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The same forms a convenient artists appliance in which the required accessories can be conveniently stored and brought in position for use and the several parts constituting the ap pliance compactly folded or closed u Besides using my appliance for tie purposes hereinbefore stated, I may transform it into a study holder, for holding stray sheets, books and the like, by attaching a metal plate (I which has a brace e bent down therefrom to rest against the edge of the swinging rack 23, when the slots f and f have beeniitted over the screw heads 9 on the rack 3, as shown.

Owing to the direction of slant of the slot f andf, a very tight connection between the holder (1 and rack 3 is possible after they have been fitted on the screws and pressed down.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1, An appliance of the character described, comprising a suitable support, a table mounted thereon, an easel or supporting frame hinged at one end to the front upper edge of the table, means on the table that connects with the frame for supporting the frame at its tilted positions, a drawer slidable under the table at one end thereof, said drawer including a hinged top having a rack on its under side for holding brushes and other articles.

2. In an appliance of the character described, a suitable support, a table mounted on the upper end thereof, a drawer slidable under one end of the table, said drawer including a hinged member adapted to be swung up and held at a vertical position when the drawer is pulled out, means on the under side of the said hinged member for receiving one end of brushes, and means in the drawer for sustaining the free ends of the brushes when the said hinged member is closed down to slide with the drawer under the table.

3. An apparatus of the character described, comprising a support, a-table mounted thereon, said table being of box-like form, an easel or supporting frame hinged at one end to the front upper edge of the table, means on the table that connects with the frame for supporting the frame in its tilted positions, a air of drawers slidable endwise into the box-like table to be inclosed thereby when in one position, one of said drawers having a supplemental lid attached thereto, and means carried by the supplemental lid for holding articles within the drawer.
