Be it known that I, JOHN O. MORRIS, citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fare-Registers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fare registers for use in street cars and in like situations, the invention being designed to prevent fraud on the part of the conductors, who collect the fares, and the invention comprises means associated with the fare register by which the attention of the passengers, and particularly the one who has just paid his fare, will be attracted to the fare register, and particularly to the act of the conductor in ringing up the fare, so that the conductor will be deterred from omitting to do this with the intention of appropriating the fare to his own use.
In carrying out my invention I provide means whereby at irregular intervals, or more properly speaking, after a number of fares have been rung up a sign ticket or like device will be displayed by the operation of ringing up the last fare, which sign or ticket will entitle the passenger whose fare has just been rung up to an award of some character, such as a ticket or a number of tickets, or a free pass on the road. Of course, the interval between the display or the ejection ofthe award is made variable so that neither the passenger nor the conductor will know when the award devices will eject or display the award or sign, and in this way the attention of the passengers will be constantly directed to the fare register and to the work being performed by the conductor, thus deterring him from carn rying out any fraudulent intentions.
In connection with the award displaying or delivering mechanism and the fare registering mechanism, I provide locking means so that when the awarding or displaying mechanism is operated the apparatus will be locked and will require the conductor to perform a specific act in releasing the mechanism for subsequent operations and the lockA l ing operation will prevent the conductor from proceeding with the ringing up of fares until after he has delivered the award to the properperson and has then reset the parts for another operation.

One result ofthe use of my invention will be to induce or force the conductors to ring up the fares separately, for as they do not know at what moment the award will be displayed and the mechanism locked they will of necessity, in order to deliver the award to the proper person, have to ring up the fares separately as they will be in constant expectation of the display of the award or the ej ection thereof from the apparatus.
My invention consists in the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.4

Referring first to Fig. 9, l() indicates a fare register of any ordinary standard form. l1 indicates generally the detector or award! displaying or ejectingmechanism which is operated through a link I2 from the lever 13, which in turn is operated by the fare register cord I4 in any ordinary manner. The operation of this lever 13 serves to operate the fare register and to simultaneously give one action or movement tothe award displaying mechanism. The link 12 connects with a slide 15 arranged to move between gibs 1.6 Vlixed to the bottoni plate 17 ol the casing 1S which contains the mechanism for displaying or ejecting the award or both, and also the means for locking the apparatus together with the lare register when. an award has been displayed or ejected and is to be delivered to the passenger whose fare has just been rung up. The slide 15 has incliiies or cam edges 19 thereon operating against aroller 20 on a slide 21 moving in guides 22 on the said base 17 the said slide 21 carrying a pawl 23 under tension. of a spring 24 and engaging a toothed wheel or ratchet 25. This toothed wheel is located below the intermediate frame plate 26 arranged within the casing and is therefore shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The shaft ol this wheel extends up through the frame plate 26 and carries at its upper end above the said frame plate, a disk 27 having teeth 28 thereon adapted to engage recesses 29 in a disk 30, which is also jouriialed to the plate 26 and has teeth portions 29 to engage recesses in a similar power transmitting wheel 31 which in turn transmits movement to a disk or wheel 32, both of these disks being also j ouriialed in the frame plate 26. The disk 32 has associated therewith a worm gear 33 meshing with a worm gear 34 on a shaft 35 joiirnaled in bearings 36 on the frame plate, the said sha'lt carrying a pin wheel 37, the peripheral pins or teeth oi which, as shown at 38, are arranged to engage openings in the ticket strip, said strip being indicated at 40 and the openings at 41. This ticket strip is rolled on a supply drinn 39 and on its way to the delivery opening at 42 it passes along a chute or guide 43 which directs it and holds it in proper position to be cngaged by the pins 38 so that the revohition of this wheel will leed the ticket strip outwardly through the mouth 42 and the times at which this ejecting operation will be performed. depends of co urse upon the relation of the intermeshing wheels to each other.

'lhe disks 39, 31 and 32 when moved are locked in position by the locking surfaces as at 44 on one disk engaging the periphery of the adjacent disk, this locking e'll'ect holding the disk iii position until it is positively operated by the tooth on the adjacent disk. The slide 21 is returned to normal position by means of a spring 45, (see Fig. 5) this spring being contained iii a recess in the slide.
1n order to lock the award delivering mechanism and the :lare register against operation when an award is delivered or displayed l provide a locking slidea46 suitably guided in a cutaway portion ol the gib at 47 and by a screw and slot 4S, the said slide being under tension of a spring 49 and having its projection 5() arranged to engage an opening 51 in the actuating slide 15 when the said locking slide is free to move. Said slide is held normally inactive by a detent 52 engaging a pin 53, carried by an arm 54 on the slide, the end of said detent being in the path ol the teeth of a wheel or disk 55, which disk or wheel is arranged on the lower' side ol5 the lirame plate 26, but is connected with the disk or worm wheel 33 by means ol.' a pin or slia'l't. This toothed wheel moves with the disk 32 and when so moved one ol` its teeth presses the detent 52 aside releasing the pin 53 and the locking slide 46, which, under the action ol spring 49, will engage, by its projection 50, the recess 51 in the actuating i slide 15 and thus hold said slide against movement until the conductor by a specific act or operation resets the lock alter having .given the ejected ticket or award to the proper passenger. The detent 52 is under tension of a spring 56. By the use ol the awarding mechanism and the lock which operates each time that an award is displayed or delivered, the conductor is induced or lorced to register the fares separately as they are collected, instead olE permitting him to collect a large number olt and ring them up by a series of actions closely lollowing each other. F or as the awards are displayed or ejected at irregular intervals the conductor does not know the moment when the award will be delivered from the apparatus and the said apparatus locked, and to avoid confusion he must of necessity ring up the fares as collected, and as soon as the apparatus is locked he must stop the collection of lares and deliver the awardv to the proper person and then by resetting the lock he will be pershowngenerally in Fig. l.

By the operation of this signal the attention of the passengers will be directed to the display of the award or its ejection from the apparatus.
I provide means for registering the number of awards displayed or rejected, this supplemental registering mechanism being arranged within the casing 18 of the awarding mechanism and being inaccessible to the conductor or operators of the road. This registering mechanism comprises an arm attached to the shaft 66 of the registering mechanism 67, this registering mechanism being of any ordinary standard pattern as The arm 65 'exa pin 68 carried by an arm 69 on the locking slide 46 so that each time this locking slide is operated, which of course corresponds to the times at which the awards are ejected, the registering mechanism 67 will be operated to keep account of the awards delivered. Thesel tickets of award are numbered and the authorized oflicer of the company can ascertain at any time whether the registrations by the registering mechanism 67 corresponds with the number of awards delivered. y
In order to provide a visible signal or sign I employ anupper plate or dial 7l, Figs. 3 and 4, which covers all of the operating mechanism.y This plate is provided with an opening 71 through which ashutter 72 is visible and above the opening the dial bears the words Watch for free and below' the opening the word here appears. The movable shutter 72 is carried upon the front end of a shaft 73 which extends through the hollow shaft of the disk 32 and carries on its front end an arm 74, the end of which has a pin 75 entering the forked end of an arm 76 which is connected with the arm 77 carrying the shutter and which arm is pivoted to the dial or cover plate at 7 8. The inner end of the shaft 7 3 has rigidly affixed thereto, an arm 79 which is pivotally connected with a link 80, the other end of which is pivoted to the locking slide at 81 so that each time the locking' slide is moved to lock the slide l5 against action the shutter 72 will be operated through the shaft 73 and the described lever link and arm connections so casing.

I do not limit myself, of course, to `any particular form of award, as various devices may be employed to be ejected from the The casing 18 is supported by a backing frame 82 which is connected with any suitable point in the car, and said casing is locked to said frame by a latch S3 pivoted at 84 on the casing and passing through a lug 85 on the backing frame. 'This latch 83 is provided with an opening which may receive any suitable form of pad-lock, the key of which is held by the authorized officer of the company. The casing has an upper rim 86 with an inwardly projecting flange S7 bearing upon the glass SS which is supported by the pins S9. This rim is connected with thecasing by means of a bayonet slot 90, dotted lines, Fig. 8, formed in the main shell of the casing, said bayonet slot receiving a projection 91 on the rim 86 so that by turning the rim circumferentially from the position shown, Fig. S, pin 91 may be removed from thev bayonet slot to thus permit the rim of the casing to be removed therefrom. In order to prevent, however, the circumferential movement of the rim except by authorized persons, I provide a locking bolt 92 embedded in the casing and having a pin 93 projecting therefrom to enter a notch in the lower edge of the rim. This locking bolt is held in normal position to`hold the rim against circumferential movement by a pin 94 which at its inner end is adapted to bear upon the face of the backing frame 82 and so long as this pin bears against the backing face the bolt will be held in its uppermost position with the pin 92 engaging the notch in the rim. -A spring 95 is interposed between the bolt and the pin 94 tending to press the bolt outwardly. It will be seen from this construction that so long as the casing is locked to the backing frame by the latch 83, the rim 86 will be held. against circumferential movement by the pin 92, but as soon as an authorized person unlocks the casing from the backing plate at the latch 83, the casing can be separated and the pin 94 will no longer be held by bearing against the face of the backing plate and the bolt can be pressed inwardly to release the pin from the notch in the rim.
In orden to provide a signal at the end of the car opposite that at which the fare register or detector or awarding mechanism is arranged, I provide a bell 96, and if desired, a

lamp 97 at the other end of the ear, these parts being in circuit with a suitable battery 98, the circuit olf which is closed with an arm 9S) on the locking slide engaging contacts 10U, 10]. on the lrame.
The pins 89 for supporting the glass plate may be spring pressed to avoid breakage of the glass. l may, il desired, support the dial or cover plate by centrally disposed arms 102 extending up from the standard 103.
By means of the perforated. ticket strip and the wheel having the pins thereon, fraud cannot be perpetrated. by any one attempting to pull out through the discharge mouth the end of the ticket strip, lor the toothed wheel being held in llixed position by its worm gearing will simply tear the ticket strip and prevent any perfect tickets from being secured..
.It will be observed that the award delivering mechanism is independent ol the lare registering mechanism in that it may be employed with any lorm of lare register without requiring change therein.
The awarding mechanism is complete in itsell" and may be set up along side ol the ordinary register mechanism.
I claim as my invention 1. .ln combination in an awarding mechanism. lor use with fare registers, a reciprocatory slide having an incline or inclines thereon and having connection. with the lare registering mechanism, means lor delivering an award Y and connections between the said delivery means and` the said slide comprising the supplemental slide operated by inclines on the main slide and pawl and ratchet mechanism operated by the supplemental slide, substantially as described.
2. ln combination in an awarding mechanism l'or use with fare registers, a slide having anlincline or inclines, a supplemental slide operated by the said incline, award delivering means and connection between the supplemental slide and said award delivering means, substantially as described.
3. lfn combination in an award delivering means lor use with fare registers, a wheel having pins or teeth on its periphery to engage the awarding devices and means for operating the said pin wheel at intervals and by the operation of the fare register mechanism,
substantially as described.
4. In combination with lare registering mechanism, an award delivering means comprising a wheel having pins on its periphery to engage the awarding devices and means for operating the said pin-wheel at intervals, the said pin wheel being located. adjacent the discharge opening lor the award devices, substantially as described.
5. In combination in an award device l'or use with lfarc registers, a pin wheel with means for operating the same to eject the award, a
chute adjacent the periphery of the pin wheel through which the awards pass, and means lor driving the pin wheel at regular intervals, said means serving to hold said wheel against movement should the award be pulled outward substantially as described.
6. In combination with an award delivering or display means lor use with l'are registers, a slide with connections lor operating the same when the fare register is operated, connections between the said slide and the award delivering means, the said slide being adapted to operate the said connections when moved. in either direction, substantially as described.
7. In combination with an award delivering means for use with i'are registers, a slide with means for operating the same when the fare register is operated, a supplemental slide moving at right angles to the main slide and operated by the said main slide and connections from the supplemental slide to the award delivering means, substantially as described.
S. lfn combination with an awarding mechanism for use with lare registers, a slide with connections l'or operating the same when the lare register is operated connections operated by the said slide lor operating the awarding mechanism and a lock with means lor operz'iting the same automatica]ly, said lock engaging a part ol the slide, substantially as described.

10. In combination with an awarding mechanism for use with l'are registers, connections lor operating said awarding mechanism, locking means therefor, a detent lor holding' the saidv locking means inactive, a toothed wheel l'or operating the detent and a slide forming a part of the operating connection lor the awarding mechanism, the said lock when released engaging the said slide, substantially as described.
11. In combination in an awarding mechanism for use with larc registers, a slide with means lor operating the same when the lare register is operated, awarding mechanism, a train of wheels between the said slide and the awarding mechanism, a lock, a toothed wheel operated from the said train of wheels and means lor controlling the lock from the operation ot said toothed wheel, sulxstantiall.,v as described.
12. In combination in an awarding mech anism for use with fare registers, a slide to be operated when the fare register is operated, awarding mechanism, a toothed wheel connected with the awarding mechanism to be operated thereby and a sliding locking device, the said toothed wheel controlling the said sliding locking device, substantially as described.
13. In 'combination in an awarding mechanism for use with fare registers, a slide to be operated when the fare register is operated, awarding mechanism, a supplemental slide operated from the main slide and connected with the awarding mechanism, a sliding lock to engage the main slide, a` detent and a toothed wheel operating with the awarding mechanism for releasing the detent to allow the sliding lock to engage the main slide, substantially as described.
14. In combination in an awarding mechanism for use with fare registers, awarding means, a main operating member in connection with the fare register to be operated thereby, a train of wheels between the same and the awarding device including a toothed wheel and a pawl for operating the same, a main frame plate in front of which the train of wheels is located, excepting said toothed wheel, a lock arranged in rear of the frame plate and a toothed wheel connected with the train' of wheels and located in rear of the said frame plate for controlling the lock, substantially as described.
15. In combination a main slide, a frame plate in front of the same, a train of wheels on the front side of the frame plate, a pawl and ratchet connection between the said slide and the train of wheels, said pawl and ratchet connection being on the rear side of the plate, a sliding lock for engaging the main slide on the rear side of the said frame plate and a toothed wheel for controlling the lock, said toothed wheel being located on the rear side of the frame plate and connected with a train of wheels on the front side thereof, substantially as described.
16. In combination with an awarding mechanism for use with fare registers, locking means for the awarding mechanism, an alarm and a toothed wheel for controlling the locking mechanism and the alarm, substantially as described.
17. 4In combination in an awarding mechanism for use with fare registers, awarding means with operating connection thereto, a dial and shutter having a sign displayed thereon and means for operating the said shutter to display the said sign when the awarding means is operated, substantially as described.
18. In combination in awarding mechanism for use with fare registers a fare register, connections operated with the fare register, awarding means operated thereby for presenting an award and a register connected' with the awarding means to register the number of awards ejected, substantially as described.
19. In combination, awarding mechanism, connections for operating the same, a lock for the said connections, a register to register the number of actions of the awarding mechanism, and means for operating lthe said register from the locking device, substantially as described.
20. In combination with awarding mechanism, a sliding locking device, and a register operated by said sliding locking device.
21. In combination with awarding means, a display shutter pivotally supported, connections to the awarding means including a train of wheels, one of which has a hollow shaft, a shaft passing through the said.hol vlow shaft and connected with the shutter, and means for operating the said shaft when the awarding means is operated, substantially as described.
22. In combination, a shutter, awarding means, and locking means to be set when the awarding means is operated, said locking means operating the shutter when the locking means is set, substantially as described.
23. In combination with awarding means, a shutter, a register to indicate the number of operations of the awarding means, a lock to be set when the awarding means is operated, the said shutter and register being operated from the said lock, substantially as described.
24. In combination in awarding mechanism for use with fare registers, award presenting means with connections for operating the same when the fare register is operated, a signal device arranged at a point distant from the awarding means electric circuit connections from the awarding mechanism to the said signal device, and means for closing said circuit when the awarding mechanism is operated, substantially as described.

In combination, awarding mechanism, connections for operating the same when the fare register is operated, a lock with means for setting the same when the awarding mechanism is operated, a signal to be arranged at a point distant from the awarding mechanism and means for operating the said signal from the setting of the lock, substan tially as described.
26. In combination with a casing, an award delivering or displaying device, connections for operating the same including worm gearing whereby the said device will be held against movement except through the said worm gearing, substantially as de- A.
