Description
PATENTED AUG. 11, 1908.
F BRITTAN TOE PLATE. APPLICATION FILED NOV 18, 1907 N Juno 62.0. %m WOL.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED BRITTAN, OF ANSELMO, NEBRASKA.
TOE-PLATE To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, FRED BRITTAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anselmo, in the county of Custer and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toe-Plates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a' new and useful improvement in a toe plate.
The invention has for its object a device simple in construction and adapted to be easily adjusted to shoes of various breadth.
Figure 1., is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2, is a bottom view; Fig. 3, is a view taken on the line {I}, 90, of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, is a view of one of the clamping members, and Fig. 5, is a view of the other clamping member.
In the drawings, 1, indicates the plate made from a single piece of metal bent downwardly at the corners so as to form cleat members 2. The clamping members 3, and 4, are made from single strips of metal and are bent at one end so as to form hooks 5, adapted to extend around the edge of the sole of the shoe and 6, represents spring members within the hook portion 5, riveted at 7, so as to leave the upper end free and adapted to be easily pressed against the upper surface of the sole by means of a cam ever 8.
The clamping members 3, and 4, are provided with slots 9, adapted to receive the guiding lugs 10, which are riveted to the base plate 1. The member 4, is provided with a plurality of keyhole slots 11, adapted to re ceive a lug 12, on the member 3.
In securing the plate 1, to the shoe sole the clamping members 3, and 4, are first adjusted so as to be of a width equal to that of the sole at the point where the plate is to be clamped. This adjustment is effected by means of the lug 12, and the keyhole slots 11, the lug being placed in any one of the openings according Specification of Letters Patent.

to the width of the sole. The head of the lug is inserted through the largest part of the slot and it can readily be seen that when the clamp members are drawn slightly apart they will be securely wedged. The hook members 5, extend over the edge of the sole and the spring members 6, Y are pressed against the upper surface by means of the czitm lever 8. This looks the plate securely in ace.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire .to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
1. A toe plate having hook members, spring metal strips riveted to the inner surfaces of the hooks and adapted to engage the sole of the shoe, and means for clamping said strips to the edge of the sole.
2. A toe plate provided with adjustable clamping means consisting of two interlocking strips curved at their outer end to form hooks,'the hooks having a strip of spring metal riveted to their inner face adapted to engage the shoe sole.
3. A toe plate provided with adjustable clamping members consisting of two interlocking strips curved at their outer ends to form hooks, a strip of spring metal connected to the inner surface of the hook, and a cam lever adapted to press the spring against the sole of the shoe.
4. A toe plate provided with adjustable clamping means consisting of two interlocking strips curved at their outer ends to form hooks, clamping means on the hooks consisting of a metal strip riveted at one end of the plate and a cam lever adapted to press the strip against the sole.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED BRITTAN.
