Be it known that '1, WILLIAM S. AUNGST, of Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Supporting Devices for Portabe Telephones; and I clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
y invention relates to an in supporting devices for portable telephones, and it consists in the parts as will be more fully explainedand pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in elevation of my. improvement, showing it removabl clamped to a desk. Fig. 2 is a similar view showin two telebrackets on a single-standard, the support for the latter being screwed to the side of a desk. Fi 3 is a view part1 in section and partly in eilevation, the stand ard being shown secured to asupport adapted to be screwed to the top of a desk. Figs. 4 and 5 are views of the transmitter supporting clamp. Fig. 6 is a view of a standard support adapted for use on partitions. Figs.
7, 8 and 9 are views of modified forms of transmitter supporting clamps, and Fig. 10 is a view of a modified form of supporting' bracket.
1 re resents a metal rod or standard detachab y secured at its lower end to a suitable base 2, which in Fig. 1, is in the form of a clamp ada ted to be detachably secured to the top of a esk or table. In Fig. 2 the base is particularly adapted to be screwed to the side of a desk; Fig. 3 shows a base adapted to be screwed to the top of a desk and in Fig. 6 it is constructed to bescrewed to a wall or partition. The standard] mav be used in connection with these or any ot ier preferred form of bases and is detachably secured in a socket at the upper end of the base by the screw 5.
The standard 1 may be angular or cylindrical in cross section, and of a-length sufiicient to permit of all reasonable and necessary l vertical movement of the bracket 'carryin the telephone transmitter. This horizonta bracket is made in two or more sections pivotally connected, the inner one 6 of which is rovided at its rear end with an enlarged huli having an opening 7 through same of a size slightly greater than the'c ross section of the standard 1, so as to permit of the free verdo hereby de- 4 improvement tical movement of the bracket on the standard, and at the same time act as a clam for sustaining the bracket in any horizonta adl-justment at which it may be placed on the i standard.
As the opening through section 6 of the bracket is but slightly greater than the diameter of the standard, it will be seen that the weight of the bracket and telephone I thereon, falls on the upper rear edge. and the lower front edge of the wall of the opening 7, which edges, biting against the standard, act as a clamp and absolutely prevent the accidental descent of the bracket. The greater the weight of the bracket and telephone thereon, the greater the clamping action, hence in orderto adjust the bracket vertically, it is necessary to grasp it and lift it sufficiently to take theweight off the clamping edges of the wall of the opening 7 through section 6 of the bracket, which leaves the latter free to be elevated or lowered, and when the bracket is released, the weight then holds its clamping edges in the osltion to which it has been adjusted. on so adjusted, the bracket is free to turn on the standard, but is held against any downward movement. Section 6 is provided at its outer end with an integral head 8 provided centrally with an upwardlv projecting bearing-9, having an internally threaded recess for engaging screw l 10 whic secures the two sections of the bracket together. a Section 11 of the bracket i is provided at its inner end with a hub, bored 5 to receive the bearing 9 on section 6. This hub is longer than the bearing 9, and is umnterbored at its top to receive the ca 12 which is licldeinplace by screw 10, and w ich locks section 11 to section 6 against displacement, without interfering with its free pivi otal movement on said bearing. If there be more than two sections to the bracket, they will be connected together in the same manner; The outer section of the bracket, (in the present instance 11) is provided at its outer end with a bearin 13, in all respects like bearing 9. Mounted on this bearing 13 is one member 14 of the combined support and clamp for the telephone. This member l 14 is provided with a hub mounted on bearl ing 13, and terminating approximately on'a l line with the top of the hearing. The huh I and end of the member 14 adjacent thereto l l I are cut away on top to form a seat for hub 15 of member 16 of the telephone support and clamp. This hub 15 is seated on the nb of member 14 and is secured thereto by screw 17 which is screwed into bearing 13, the head of ,the screw resting in a counter sunk recess in hub 15.
The two members 14 and 16 are each curved in the arc of a circle and are each provided with one or more upwardly projecting toes 18, which latter are adapted to overlap and engage the base of the telephone trans-' mitter and hold the latter firml on the combined support and clamp. T e -two members of the combined support and clamp are yieldingly drawn toward each other by the spring 19, connected to each, and one member, in the present instance 14, is provided with a downwardly and outwardly rojecting handle 20 which is grasped by t 1e user when opening the jaws to receive or release the telephone. When the telephone is in place and it is desired to remove same, the transmitter is grasped b one hand and the handle 20, by the other liand, and the members se arated. After the base of the transmitter as been released from the toes of the member 14 of the combined support and clamp, it is tilted laterally by the hand grasping same and removed.
' In cases where two or more telephones are used both can be mounted on the single standard as shown in Fig. 2.
With a bracket thus constructed, a telephone may be adjusted to any: height most convenient for the user, and when once adjusted vertically, will remain so and may be manipulated to carry the telephone out of the way, or bring it into any position most convenient for the user.
In the construction shown in Fig. 7 the transmitter supporting clamp is made in two sections, each section having pivotal connection with the supporting bracket. In Fig. 7 one section 16 is ivotally mounted on the bracket and the ot er 14 pivoted to section 16". With this construction the connection between the bracket and the clamp comes approximatelyunder the center of the telephone, whereas in the construction shown in Fig. 8 the connection between the bracket and clamp, is at the periphery of the latter.
In the construction shown in Fig. 9, the member 14' is connected to the section 16', by a vertical pivot which permits of a horizontal movement of the member l4",-and the latter is made of two parts connected by a horizontal pivot 22 which permits the outer section of member 14' to swing downwardly, right position by the spring 21 carried by the inner section of member 14". With this construction member 14? can be swung outwardly sutiiciently to causethe clamping it being normally retained in its uptoe thereon to disengage the base of the transmitter, and then be depressed so as to permit of the free remova of the transmitter.
In Fig. 10, I have shown the bracket section 11 provided with a hub 23, having a bore open at the bottom and closed at the top, to receive the stud 24 on the outer end of the bracket section 6, each of said studs having a peripheral groove in same to receive the end of the screws 25 which lock the sections to ether.

The combination with a su porting standard and a securing base there or; of a bracket adjustable vertically on said standard, and a combined support and clamp comprising two curved members both ivotall connected with the bracket an provi ed with means adapted to engage the base of the telephone, and a spring tending to move said curved members toward each other.
2. The combination with a su porting standard and a securing base there or, of a bracket adjustable vertically and pivotally mounted on said standard, and a combined support and clam comprising two curved members pivotal y connected with the .bracket, and provided with toes adapted to engage the base of the telephone, onemember of said combined support and clamp having a handle, and a spring connecting both members.
3. The combination with a bracket, of a transmitter supporting clamp carried thereby and com rising two pivotally connected members eac having toes to engage the base of the transmitter, one of said members being made in two sections connected by a horizontal pivot whereby the outer section of said two part member can swing outwardly and downwardly.
4. The combination with a bracket, of a transmitter supporting clamp .pivotallysecured thereto and composed of two pivotally connected members, one of which is made in two sections, the-said sectional member adapted to swing outwardl and the outer section of said member a apted to swing downwardly, and a spring for holding said outer section normally in a plane with the other parts of said clamp.
