Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1 1, 1908.
Application filed October 3, 1907. Serial No. 395,687.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NILs SvENsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Scrapers, Mops, &c. and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved head or holder for scrapers, mops, etc. and especially designed as a holder for window and floor scrapers.
To the above ends the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the'claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred form of the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view, showing the improved device. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line 00 x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 20 x of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 00 m of Fig. 1, but with some parts broken away, and with some parts removed. Fig.5 is a fragmentary view in plan, showing the intermediate portion of the lower member of the twohinged clamping frame. Fig. 6 is a detail in section taken on the line as of Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the lower member of the two clamping frames. Fig. 8 is a bottom plan view of the upper member of the two clamping frames. Fig. 9 is a plan view of the lock lever. Fig. 10 is a section taken on the line 00 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 11 is a view in cross section, showing a rubber or flexible strip used as a scraper b ade; and Fig. 12 is a corresponding cross section, showing the said flexible scraper blade folded and in condition for application between the clamping edges of the two clamping frames.
Chiefly, the improved holder or clamping head is made up of upper and lower clamping frames 1 and 2, a lock lever 3 and a socket 4, all of which parts are preferably stamped or pressed from sheet steel. Both of the socalled clamping frames are of skeleton form, and the body portions of each are pressed into channel form to give a maximum strength with a minimum of metal. The lower clamping frame 2 is provided with a laterally offset channel-shaped yoke or bar 5 that is connected to the body thereof by a channelsha ed centrally located integrally formed tie ar 2 and, as shown, also by small bar portions 2 located on opposite sides of said bar portion 2 The upper clamping frame, in a somewhat similar manner, is provided with an integrally formed channel-shaped yoke or bar 6 that is connected to the body thereof by small intermediately located tie bars 7. At the center of this yoke 6 is an upwardly and rearwardly turned cam portion or flange 8. On opposite sides of its center, and at its inner edge, the upper clamping frame 1 is provided with longitudinally spaced hinge flanges 9, and at its center it is provided with a depending presser foot or flange section 10, the lower edge of which is preferably turned slightly upward. The curved lower edge of this presser foot 10 is offset, or set out of transverse line, with the u turned or hooklike edges 11 of the hinge anges 9 for an important purpose which will hereinafter appear.
The channel-shaped body portion of the lower clamping frame 2, at its rear or inner edge, is formed with a down-turned hinge flange 12 that engages the seats formed by the up-turned edge 11 of the hinge flanges 9 of the upper clamping frame 1, as best shown in Fig. 6, to form a hinge connection between the two clamping frames 1 and 2. The pole socket 4 is riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the centrally located tie bar 2 of the lower frame 2. The parallel outwardly projecting flanges of the two clamping frames 1 and 2 are formed with rows of small teeth 13, pressed from the fiat intermediate portions of said two clamping flanges. These small teeth 13 cause the clamping flanges of the said clamping frames to more securely hold a flexible rubber scra er blade and, hence, are very desirable. T e lock lever 3 is pivotally connected at 3 to one side of the tie bar 2 of the lower clamping frame 2, and near its pivoted end, it is formed with an upwardly pressed or bulged wedge acting cam head 3 that is arranged for a camming action on the upturned cam flange or surface 3 of the yoke 6 of the upper clamping frame 1. The bottom portion of the cam head 3 works over the flat portion 14 of a resistance plate 14, the intermediate portion of which is depressed to fit the tie bar 2 of the lower frame 2 and, as
shown, is rigidly secured thereto by a..rivet 15, which, in the construction illustrated, is also passed through a forwardly extended portion of the socket 4 and assists in securing the latter to the lower frame 2. The forwardly a'nd upwardly extended end of the plate 14 affords an abutment or base of reaction for the curved edge of the presser foot 10 which, as above noted, is carried by the central portion of the body of the upper clamping frame 1 and is laterally offset in a forwardly direction from the engaging portions of the hinge flanges 9 and 12.
In Figs. 1, 2 and 6, the clamping edges of the clampingframes 1 and 2 are shown as holding a quite thick and heavy rubber scraper blade 16 which is ada ted for use to scrape or rub water from the loor. Figs. 11 and 12 show a thinner rubber scraper blade 16 which, at one side of its transverse center, is provided with a longitudinal slit l6 that extends from end to end thereof and is cut nearly but not quite through the said blade. When this blade is folded, asshown in Fig. 12, one flap thereof projects beyond the edge of the other. When this folded scraper bladeis held between the clamping edges of the'clamping frames 1 and 2, it is especially adapted for use to scrape water from windows.
As already indicated and as best shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the presser foot or flange 10 engages the abutment 14 at a point offset from and forward of the line of engagement between the hinge flanges 9 and 12. The.
are so related to each other and to the said parts 9 and 12 that they exert a pressure which tends to force apart the toothed clamping edges of the c amping frames 1 and 2, as shown in Fig.- 4. No one of these parts is especially a spring member, although there is, of course, some resilience so that the effect of this clamping action is that of a spring device tending to separate the clamping edges of the clamping frames. Furthermore, the engagement of the said members 10 and 14 serves to hold the hinge flanges 9 and 12 interlocked against accidental separation.
When the lock lever 8 is moved from its inoperative position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 into its operative position shown by full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, its wedge-acting cam head or portion 3 forces itself between the resistance plate 14 on the lower clamping member, and the cam flange 8 of the yokelike bar 6 of the upper clamping frame 1, and thereby forces the toothed clam ing edges ofthe two clam ing frames 1 an 2 tightly onto a scraper b ade 15 or 16, according to which is used. The inner end of the lock lever 3 is capable of a slight vertical movement, and under the downward pressure thereon when in an operative position, its free end is depressed slightly into the channel said parts 10 and 14 stamped or pressed of the yoke bar 5 of the lower clamping frame 2, so that the said lever is locked in its operative position by the outer flange of the said channeled yoke bar 5, as best shown in Fig. 10. Slight upward pressure from the fingers on the said lock lever serves to raise its free end above the cooperating lock flange of said bar 5, so that the lock lever may be easily released and moved in its inoperative position, when desired.
The so-called yoke bar 6 of the upper clamping frame 1 will spring slightly when ressed upward by the cam 3 of the lock lever 3 and, hence, the toothed clamping edges of the said frames will adapt themselves to scraper blades that vary considerably in thickness.
The short tie bar sections 7 hold the yoke bar 6 against, edgewise movements, while permitting the same to spring under the action of the lock lever, as above stated. The short tie bars 2 also serve to render the yoke bar 5 held rigid againstedgewise move ments.
WVhat I claim is:
1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a pair of clamping frames having blade clamping edges ing hinge flanges, one of said frames having an abutment, and the other frame having a presser foot or flange engageable with the said abutment at a point out of line with the said cooperating hinge flanges, said abutment and presser foot serving to hold said hinge flanges interlocked and exerting a pressure tending to rock said frames in a direction to separate their blade clamping edges and a lock lever pivoted to one of said frames and working with a wedge-like action between said two frames, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a pair of clamping frames stamped or pressed from sheet metal and provided with forwardly projecting blade clamping flanges and with rearwardly offset channel shaped yoke bars, one of said clamping frames having a presser foot 10 and 1on2- gitudinally spaced hinge flange 9 with curved edges 11, and the other clamping frame having an abutment with which said presser foot 10 engages, and hinge flanges 12 seated in-the curved portions 11 of said hinge flanges 9, said presser foot 10 being forwardly offset from the engaging line of said hinge flanges and exerting a force on said abutment tending to hold said hinge flanges interlocked and to rock said clamping frames in a direction to separate their blade clamping edges and a lock lever pivoted to one of said frames and working with a wedge-like action between said two frames, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a lower clamping frame 2,. from sheet metal and and cooperatformed with a channel shaped yoke bar 5 connected to the body thereof by an integrally formed bar 2", the body of said frame 2 having rearwardly and downwardly turned" hinge flanges 12, of an upper clamping frame 1 having a channel-shaped yoke bar 6 and longitudinally spaced hinge flanges 911 engaging said hinge flanges 12 and having also a presser foot 10, a resistance plate 14 secured to said bar 2 and having a portion 14 with which said presser foot 10 engages at a point offset from the engaging line of said hinge flanges, a lock lever pivoted to said lower clamping frame and working with a wedge-like action between said resistance plate 14 and the intermediate portion of said yoke bar 5, and a pole socket secured to said lower clamping frame, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a air of clamping frames connected for hinge-Iike movements, one on the other, said frames having forwardly projecting blade clamping flanges and rearwardly offset yoke bars, of a lock lever pivoted to one of said yoke bars, provided with a wedge-acting cam insertible between said yoke bars and having interlocking engagement at its free end with the yoke bar to which it is pivoted, when in an operative position, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a pair of pivotally connected clamping frames, formed or ressed from sheet metal and having forward y proj ecting clamping flanges and rearwardly oif' set channel-shaped yoke bars, of a lock lever pivotally connected to one of said frames, provided with a wedge-acting cam insertible between said yoke bars, the free end of said lock lever being capable of limited vertical movement for interlocking engagement with the outer flange of the channelshaped yoke bar and frame to which said lever is pivoted, substantially as described.
