Be it known that I, ROBERT R. LANE, a

citizen of the United States, residing at 180-- trolt, count ol' Wayne, btate of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Inn provement 1n Computmgdviaclunes, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and e;

act description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it per tains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,

the individual numbers to be added are printed in columns on a strip of paper pres paratory to imprinting on the same strip of paper the total of all the individual numbers.

The attachment consists of a holder for a piece of guard. paper that covers that part of the platen upon which some of the figures wou d be imprinted, and thereby prevents one or more of the columns from being printed, leaving other spaces open or uncov ered, in which may be im rinted an figures that may be desired, as or exainpe in the drawings, which are attached hereto, there appears on the platen under the guard, thefigure 13 in one place, and 417 opposite on the same line, put in other columns and between the two, is a space sufiicient to be occupied by two colunins, which on the paper would be left blank, the imprint from the type being received on the guard, (the imprint which would appear on the guard is not shown in the drawing). This might mean that document number 13, as a note, for instance, represents $447, and document number 14 represents $5.23, or clerk, number 13 made a sale of $4.17, or any other trans action inwhich two indicating numbers are desired, and ofwhich a record is to be made.

The plate 1 is secured to the standards 2 and 3 and remains fixed in position with respect to the frame. it is provided with two inclined slits 6 and 7 through which engage the necks of buttons 8 and 9, fixed to the rear face of a plate 10 that reciprocates along the inclined slots, both rising and moving sidewise. The reciprocating plate 10 is provided i with fastening means for the engagement therewith of a shield 11 of pa er or any suit able material.
