LUBRICATING-OIL FEEDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. KEHOE, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Lubricating-Oil Feeders, of W ch the followlngris a speciiication.
his invention relates to improvements in lubricat' oil feeders, and the object thereof is to affor mechanism for the automatic distribution of lubricating oil to the various parts of machine which require lubrication, and which w' cause the lubricant to be discharged from a reservoir by force periodically in predetermined quantities.
The above object is accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in vwhich Figure 1. is a side elevation shown partially in central section; Fig. 2. is a transverse section of the device on the line :rof Fig. 1, showing the driving mechanism; and Fig. 3. is a transverse section of the device on the line yy of Fig. 1, showing the mechanism for operating the lungers.
Similar numera s of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and referring now to the same: 1 is a reservoir which consists of a rectan lar box having a screw cap 2 in its top which, upon its removal, affords an openin through which to charge the reservoir witlgi a supply of lubricating oil. A strainer 3 is arranged within the reservoir immediately beneath the cap 2 which serves the obvious purpose of collecting solids from the lubricant as it passes into the reservoir.
A number of discharge pipes 4 de end from the bottom of the reservoir 1 an the top portion of each pipe projects a short distance up into the reservolr and has communication therewith afforded by openings 5 which are made in the sides of its protruding end. In the upper end of each pipe is a plunger 6 which has in connection therewlth a yoke 7, the stem of which extends through the top of the reservoir and has xed thereon an adjustable stop 8 and jam-nut 9. ' and also a valve 12 which is adapted to rest upwardl against said seat. A s ring 13 is arrange in the lower part of eac pipe and acts upwardly against the corresponding valve 12 to hold the latter in closed position.
An operating shaft 14 is mounted hori- Zontall in the reservoir and is adapted to be rotate and upon said shaft are eccentrically mounted two cylinders 15 and 16 respectively. The said cylinders are loosely mounted upon said shaft, and the latter has screws 1717 in connection therewith, the heads of the screws pro'ecting suiiiciently from the surface of the s aft to engage the inner surface of the corresponding cylinder and cause the latter to be actuated. -Openings 18 are made in the heads of each cylinder which are adapted to admit the passage of the heads of the screws 17-17 when the shaft is being inserted into the cylinders.
The cylinders 15 and 16 are arranged beneath the horizontal portions 19 of the yokes and are adapted to come into contact therewith and move the yokes upward as the shaft 4 is rotated. The screws 17 within the cylinder 16 are oppositely disposed to the screws 17 which are within the cylinder 15, and therefore when the shaft is rotated the protruding side of the cylinder 15 will be up ermost while the protruding side of the cy inder 16 will be in lowermost osition, and the'yokes which are operatedp by the res ective cylinders will act accordingly.
pon one end of the shaft 4 is rigidly fixed a ratchet -wheel 20, and adjacent thereto upon the shaft is loosely mounted a swinging arm 21 which has loosely ivoted at its upper end two ratchets 22 an 23. A s ring 24 acts downwardly upon the forwar end of the ratchet 23 and upward against the rear portion of the ratchet 22 so that the toothed endsof each ratchet will be held continually against the toothed edge of the ratchetwheel 20. The ratchets 22 and 23 are so spaced` apart'that when one of said ratchets is affainst the radial face ofra tooth of the ratc et-wheel the other ratchet will rest idly between two of the teeth thereof. E v A Two spring-pressed pawls 25 and' 26 are pivoted witlnn the reservoir and engage the teeth of .thev ratchet-Wheel, their ed ends bearing the same relation to the teeth thereof as the ratchets 22 and 23. The urpose of the pawls is to detain the ratc etwheelfrom retracting.
A stud 27 projects from the side of the arm 21 and is engaged by the bifurcated lower end of a swinging arm 28, the latter having connection with a shaft 29' which extends horizontally through the upper part of the reservoir. An actuating lever 30 is fixed upon the extending end of the shaft 29 and is intended to be connected with and swung to and fro by any suitable source of mechanical motion.
In the o eration of this invention, the reservoir is filled with a supply of lubricating oil, and the pipes 4 are connected at their lower ends respectively by means of tubes 31 with the bearings or other parts of machinery'where lubrication is required, and then continuous swinging motion is applied to the actuating lever 30. The motion applied to the lever 30 is transmitted by means of the arm 28 to the ratchet arm 21, andconsequently the ratchets 22 and 23 will engage and drive the ratchet-wheel, and the, latter will be detained from retracting because of the engagement of the pawls 25 and 26. As the ratchet-Wheel is revolved the shaft 14 Will be accordingly rotated, and the head of the screws 17 and 17 will engage the respective cylinders and cause them to turn with the shaft so that their rotruding sides Will be carried upward an engage and lift the corresponding yokes.` As the protruding side of each cylinder is carried over past the vertical center of the shaft, it will turn suddenly forward upon the shaft because of the downward force exerted by the springs 10 of the corres onding yokes, thus the protruding side of t e cylinder will then be in lowermost position and the lungers in connection with the corresponding yokes will be driven suddenly downward by the exertion of said springs. The screws 17 and 17, being oppositelyv disposedwill have the effect of actuating the correspondin c linders successively.

The quantit of oil discharge throu h each pipe may e decreased by adjusting t e stop 8 u on the stem of the corresponding yoke so t at the downward movement of the plunger will thereby be limited and conseuently less oil will be forced past the valve t anwhen the stop is adjusted so as t0 prompt the full stro e ofthe plunger.
A feature of this invention is that while all of the plungers are arranged to be automatically operated, each may also be independently operated by grasping the corresponding stop between the fingers and manipulating the stem of the oke so as to reciprocate the plunger vertical y.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In mechanism of the class described,a reservoir having a series of independent discharge pipes communicating therewith through its bottom; a series of plungers Working in the pipes respectively, there being openings for the passage of oil from the reservoir into the uppermost part of each pipe; an outlet valve 1n each of the pipes; a rotating shaft arranged horizontally in the reservoir; mechanism in connection with the shaft to actuate the same; one or more eccentric cylinders mounted longitudinally and loosely upon the shaft; means in connection with the shaft to engage and actuate the cylinders; a series of movable yokes correspondin with said plungers; and means acting to ho d the latter in lowermost position, the said cylinders being adapted to engage and lift said yokes.
2. In mechanism of the-class described, a reservoir having a series of discharge pipes communicating therewith; a rotating shaft arranged in the reservoir mechanism therewith to actuate the same; one or more eccentric cylinders mounted longitudinally and loosely upon the shaft; means in connection with the shaft to engage and actuate the cylinders; a series of yokes adapted to be lifted by said cylinders; a plun er in connection with each yoke respective y which operates in the corresponding pi e; and a series of springs in connection wit each of said yokes tending to hold the latter in lowermost posif tion.
3. In mechanism of the class described, a reservoir having one or more dischar e ipes communicating therewith; a rotatabe s aft; means in connection with the shaft to actuate the same; one or more eccentric cylinders mounted longitudinally and loosely upon the shaft; means in connection with the shaft to engage the cylinders and actuate the same; one or more yokes corresponding with the pipes and having relation respectively with said cylinders to be actuated thereby; and plungers working in the pipes respectively, each having connection with the corresponding yoke to be actuated thereby.
4. In mechanism of the class described, a reservoir having a series of discharg'e\pipes 'communicating therewith; a plunger operat ing in each of said pipes; a yoke for each of said plungers, the stern of each yoke extending through the top of the reservoir; an eccen- -tric rotatable cylinder within the reservoir;
