Description

PATENTED AUG. 11, 1908.
C. A. PUSHEOK. PROTECTIVE DEVICE AGAINST THE SPREAD OF FIRE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 21. 1906.
CHARLES A. PUSHECK, OF CHICAGQILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO DR. C. PUSIIECK COMPANY, OF
' CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
PROTECTIVE DEVICE AGAINST THE SPREAD OF FIRE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 11,1908.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. PUsnEoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Protective Devices Against the Spread of Fire, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for the prevention of the spread of fire and has for its object to provide new and improved 'ap-' paratus capable of being used in a great variety of ways to accomplish this end.
The device consists in general of an extensible fire proof screen or covering consisting of a number of sections adapted to be grouped and secured together to form a structure of the proper size and shape to meet a variety of different conditions which the particular emergency may present. These sections arereinforced by rigid mate rial.
My invention has for a further object to' provide new and improved constructions in sections of this character and for this purpose.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front view of one of the sections, Fig. 2, a rear view of a number of sections assembled to form the protecting covering or screen, and Fig. 3, a section throughsuch a screen.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the drawings.
It will be clear that in carrying out my invention the sections of the screen or covering might be constructed of any of a great number of suitable materials and in a variety of different ways. I have selected certain preferred constructions of the elements of the screen or protector and have indicated a preferred method of assembling said sections. This is done, however, solely for purposes of illustration.
In the drawings the several sections are represented generally by the letter A. Preferably these sections consist each of a body of non-combustible fibrous material B, such as asbestos or the like, which may be reinforced or protected on one or both sides by metal reinforcements. I have shown, associated with the fibrous body, a back sheet of metal C, and a front sheet D. The latter is preferably corrugated so as to form the air spaces D between it and the fibrous body, and also to make the structure rigid. The parts may be secured together by the rivets E and also by the staples F which may also serve as anchorage for the rings G. so These rings, as will be seen from an examination of Figs. 2 and 3, are located in various positions on the back of the sections and serve as a means, together with the wires G by which the sections may be held. in their assembled positions. The rings are also used for securing the covering in position to protect the object or the opening desired to be covered. The means of supporting the covering, however, forms no part of my present invention. Therefore, I will not describe such means other than to suggest that the position of the rings permits the protecting device to be secured at any de sired point thereon and to any object which will be most convenient for the purpose. It will be clear, of course, that any sort of a fastening device can be used for this purpose. l have shown the rings merely to illustrate my purpose. WVhen the rings are used I may associate with them the cable wires or chains by means of which the screen may be hung from any suitable object.
It will be seen that in this way a screen or covering may be formed which shall consist of rigid. sections, but which may or may not be fastened together to form a structure which is rigid as a whole. I/Vhen hung from any object, as for example, before a window 90 or to cover a cornice, or other object endangered by the proximity of lire, this screen or protector will .have weight enougl'i to prevent it from being materially affected by drafts and will form a very ellieient means of pre venting the spread of the flames to the object covered. It will be clear that any number of these sections may be grouped together to form a screen of any desired size or shape. If the screen is provided with the corrugated reinforcement, as shown in Fig. 2, the circulation of the air through the spaces D will, of course, tend to prevent the destruction of the device even under intense heat.
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of materials, construction, or use described, for obvious modifications will occur to any person skilled in the art,-and the device is also effective to shed water.
I claim: 7 fastening rings secured at one side of said A protective screen consisting of a pluunit by means of said staples. rality of separable units each consisting of a flat sheet of metal and a corrugated sheet of CHARLES PUSHECK' 5 metal with a body of noncombustible mate- Witnesses:
rial between the same, these parts being se- EDWARD T. WRAY,
cured together by staples, and a plurality of ABBIE E. JoHNsoN.
