UNITED Slirillilhlig JOSEPH FJUVLILL, OF
i ITTSBURG, l FINN S YLYANIA/ Specification of Lettersiiotent Patented. Aug. 11,1908.
Applicstion flied June 27, 1307. Serial No. 5531,11"
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1i, Josnrn FAWELL, residing at Pitt-shurg, in the county of Alleghen and State. of Ilennsylvanin, citizen oil the nited States, have invented or dis covered. certain new and useful Innrovements in Feed-Tables for Rolling-hills, of which improvements the following is 3, speci- 'lication.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in feed tables for roll ing mills and has for its object s construction in which the several parts or members or firmly secured together without the use of nuts and holes and permitting of the re movni of the rollers withoui disturb ng other portions of the table.
The invention is hereineiter'inore fully described and claimed.
In the iiccon'iponying drawings forming a part of this specification Figure 3 is s. top plain view of n' feed table embodying my. in) provement; Figs. 2 and 3 are elevations of opposite sides of the table, .resopet-ively; Figs. 4 and EA are. sectional elevations on lanes, res eotively indicated by the lines Y IV an V-V Fig. 1 Fig. 6 is a sectional lan view; Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 2 illustrating a. modification of my improvement; Fig. 8 is a sectional view on a). plane indicated by the line VHI--VIH Fig. 7 and Fig. 9 is a. detail View.
In the practice of my invention the sides 1 and 1 of the table. are formed by providecl at suitable intervals with openings 2 and 3 for the reception of she journals 4 of the rolls 5. The plates 1 are also provided with longitudinal ribs 6 above the openings 2 and 3 end to the. ribs are secured ore-fen ably by'riveting, the side pistes 7 fif'i'iflii'lg guidingsurfoces for articles moving along the table. HBracl'rets 9 are formed integral wiivh the sifle plertes which are prefemhlv formed by casting! These brackets are lornierl with heads or enlargements 10, which are recessed, as shown ill Fig. 5, and in the inner ends of these recesses are formed seals for the reception of one half of the bearing blocks 11 for thohorizontel shaft 1'12. The shaft is helcl in gesiiionby blocks 13 fitting in the. recesses in the heads '10, end held in place by vertical keys Li which being tapered and passing behind the blocks will always hold them in proper position, (omrfenest-ing for wear and will not be liable to occidental removal.
The openings 3 in one oi the siile plates as 1, mode only sulliciently' larger than the journals of the rolls, to permit of the inserlion oi a bushing 15, which is provided with a flange 16 having e flattened portion adapted to rest on a ledge or shelf 17 whercb the bushing will be held from turning Wit 1 the. journal. The opening 3 in the other side plate 1- is made of a diameter of the body of the roll to permit of he latter being passed 'therethrough in placing the rolls in osition snrl removing Lhcn'i therefrom. nnula-r blocks or bushes i8 are fitted in these openings .5, 'nl'ter the rolls have been passed through the some, said blocks having in. their axial openings linings 19 forming the bearing surfaces for the ournels oithe. rolls. The blocks or bushes 18, may be secured in irvleee n any sui'mhle manner one they lbTl-f. nrel' bly provided will. wings .20 of such engbh that the curls of adjacent Wings will be suliioiently close to permit both Wing's being engaged by the some rivet or bolt .31, preferably the former. The brackets 9 are provided with arms 22 to which are hinged phifies .33 covering the gear wheels 24 and 25 eoiiinecting the driving shaft 12 with the 4-0 s.
giburlinel edges {Lb on acute angle to the axes of the roller, and to avoid the use oi very wide feed tables the sirlo "mines Hill rolls are so proportioned i-lifit the rolls will project above the shin names. as shown in Fig. 7. When the mils are manic suliicienil large to project above the siile-irmnes, haul are so spaced that l lisisncc betsech ii centers of mliacenl; r olls is approximately o uni lo the. emineters of the rolls, the spaces or \i-shn 'ied gap beuvcon siiljncenl: rolls is so great that slabs end short billets will lip in. passing from one It the charecteristic of my improvements tsloles constructed as e es shown in Figs. 7 and 8.
roll to the next. in order to reduce this gap the; foils are formed. with ribs so which are so iod'sted thet the ribs on one roli will project hetweeii the ribs of adjacent rolls, es shownin Fig.
in adopting my imgrovement to feed -ove described, the journals 28 of the rolls are made separable from the rolls, ssid josrnhls being connected by sshgtft 293 The ournois are provided at their inner ends with seats 29 for the roll, oioh are held so as to turn with the shaft by any suitable means, as for exam )le by keys 31, oreferahly formed into e1 with the seats, n this construction, the journals and theireonnecting shaft are drawn out from the rolls through the opening in one of the side frames, the rolls heir] g removed vertically after the journals ar Witluiro-Wn. As only the journals are Withdrawn through one of the frames, the hearing opening in said frame is not made much lar er than the journal, as only the bearing bush or lining 19 is einployed the annular blocks or filling bushes 1.8 being omitted. These bushes or iini'ngs are provided with Wings similar to the ings 20, in the construe-- tion shown in Figs. 1 to 6, whereby the bushes maybe held in position.
It oioim herein as my invention: i. A feed table for rolling mills l'ioving' in combination rolls, side plates or frames provideo. with openings for the reception of the journals of the rolls, one of said openings being larger than the journals of the rolls to permit of the longitui'linel removal of the j. ournels through opening and removable bushes arranged in said openings and iorming bearings for the roll journals.
A feed table tor rolling mills havingin combination rolls, side plates or ire-mes pro-- vided with openings therein for the reception of the journals of the rolls, one of said openings being larger then the greatest diameter of the roll, and bushes arranged in said open ings and forming hearings for the ournals at that end. of the rolls.
3. A feed table for rolling mills having in combination feed rolls, side plates or frames having bearings for the jouri sls of'the rolls, toothed Wheels secured to the journals projeoting beyond the side plates, a driving shaft provided with pinions intermeshing Withthe pinions on the rolls, brackets having slots for the reception of the driving shaft, the Walls of said slots being parallel with a plane passing through the axis of the rolls and removable means for holding said shaft in hearings formed in said slots.
at. A feed table for rolling mills having side plstes'provided with openings for the reception of bearings for the roll ournals,
in combination with hearings for the journals oi the rolls, oneof the bearings Ior each roll havingtransverse dimensions grester than the diameter of the journals or portions of r the roll between the journals and removable from the openings in the side plate to permitof the horizontal movement of the journals through one of the side plates to and from operative position.
5. A feed table for rolling mills having in combination rolls, side plates or frames having hearings for the journals of the rolls and provided with longitudinal ribs shove said hearings and guide plot-es secured to said ribs.
In testimony whereof, 1 have hereunto set my heml.
JOSEPH FAWELL,
Witnesses:
