AUTOMATIC oILrNG DEVICE.
Patented Aug. 11, 1908.
Application and May 2s, 1901. serial No. 376,140.
T o all who-m it may conccm:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. BARIANI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Encampment, in the county of Carbon and State a of ll. yoming, have invented certain new and luseful Improvements in Automatic Oiling' Deyvices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. 1
My invention is an automatic pum oiler foruse upon the carriage of a tramway ucket or the like in oiling the track cable.
Thek object of the invention is vto provide a deviceof this character which will be simple and practical in construction and entirely automatic in its operation.
W'ith the above and othenobjects in view the invention consists in the no'vel construction and the combination of partshereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tramway bucket, its carriage and track cable, showing the application of my invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section taken on the plane indicated b the line 2 2 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a deta' section through the pump. In the drawings, 1 denotes a 'tramway bucket or the like suspended from a carriage 3o 2 which is provided with grooved supporting wheels 3, 4 to run u pn a trackrope or cable 5.
The numeral 6 enotes my improved automatic pump oilcr for oiling the cable 5. It
comprises an oil reservoir or container 7 suit--A ably supported from the carriage 2 and having a suction feed pipe Sleading from it to a pump 9. The latter may be of any suitable form and construction but as shown it has a verticalvcylinder secured in a base 91 arranged 4o upon the horizontal upper portion of an upriffht bracket or support 10on the carriage 2. T e base 9a is formed upon its bottom with a tubular inlet projection 9b, to the lower end of which is connected the pipe Si* and at the per end of which is a hinged valve 9c.'
pon one side of the base 9a is formed an extension provided with a discharge passage or opening and a hinged valve 9d. 'l 15 denotes a discharge pipe having one end connected to Said projection or extension and in communication with its discharee passage and its other end connected to theower end of a vertical chamber or cylinder 16 also mounted upon the bracket l0. Projecting horizontally from the chamber 16 adjacent to its. topis a discharge or outlet pipe 17 having two ver- -the cable 5 in such quantities as may be tically extending branches 1S, 19 leading from its outer end. By providing the chamber 16 and arranging the outlet pipe` 17 adjacent to its top and the connecting pipe 15 with the valve 9d adjacent to its lower end, it 4will be seen that said chamber and thc pipe 15 will be constantly filled with'oil up to t le level of the pipe 17 so that ns soon as the pum is started the oil will be forced from the o iamber 16 and out of the pipe 1T. The space in the upper portion of the chamber 16 a ove the pipe 17 also serves the purpose of an air cushion. The pump is provided with a reci rocatory piston having a rod 11 con' necte to the upper end 'of a pitman 12,
which latter has lts lower end connected to a crank 13 fixed on the shaft or journal 14 of the grooved wheel 3. The branch 1S extends downwardly to the carriage 2 and is provided with a suitable regulating valve 20 and a discharge nozzle 21. The latter is rearwardly turned and so arranged as to drop or discharge oil upon the cable or track 5 between the two wheels 3, 4. The upper branch 19 serves as 'an overflow pipe and extends rearwardly and then downwardly, as at 22, so as to discharge into the oil reservoir 7.
The o eration of the inventionis as follows: en the carriage 2 moves in the direction of the varrow in Fig. '1, the movement of the wheel 3 will be imparted by the sov crank 13 and pitman 12 to t-he pump rod 11 so that the latter will be reciprocated and -will pump' oil from the reservoir 7 through the pipe 8, the cylinder 9, the pipe 15, the chamber 16, the pipe 17, and its twobranches 18, 19. -The oil forced into the branch or discharge ipe 18is fed through the nozzle 21 to P @rmitted by the adjustment of the regulating valve while the sur'oius oil passes back to the' reservoir through the over flow ipe 19, 22.
I Fromv the foregoing it will e seen that when the device is applied to the tramway carriage and reguiated, itvsill be entirely automatic in its operation and will eiectivcly oil the track cable. It will also be noted that it is of simple construction so that itmay be reduced au a small cost and will not be liale to get out of working order.
Hapng thus described my invention what I lair and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Ina device of the character described, 'a carriage body, a track wheel -journaled thereon, a crank on the axle of said wheel, an
oil reservoir upon the carriage, 'an upright pump cylinder su ported above the carriage and provided Wit a reciprocati piston, a p itman connecting the rod of sari iston to said crank, a suction pipe leading om the oil reservoir tothe inlet of the pump, a discharge pipe in -communication with the out- 'v let of the pump and provided with upper and voir upon the carriage, apump tobe actuated from said track wheel, and a vertical pipe' connected intermediate-its ends to the pump andhaving at its lower end a discharge nozzle, its upper end being extended to provideA an overflow pipe leading to the reservoir.
3. In a device of the character described, a carriage consisting of a body, supporting Wheels journaled upon the body ad] acent to its ends, supporting brackets connected to the oppositesides or the body, an oil reserY voir sup orted between said brackets at one end of tne carriage, an upright or support upon the body, a pu'mp arranged upon said support and having a reciprocating plunger,-
a connection between the inlet of the pump and the reservoir, a crank upon the shaft of one n of said wheels, a Pitman connecting the crank an'd the plunger of the pump, a vertical pipe 35 connected intermediate its ends to the discharge ofthe pump and having at its lower end.
a discharge nozzle,
the u per end of said pipe being extended to provid,
e an overflow or .re-
turn pipe leading to the reservoir, land a con- 40 trolling' valve the lower end of said verticalV pine. Y
Ill. 'In a device of the character described,
`a carriage having a track wheel, an oil reservoir upon the carriage', the vertlcal pump 6 45 arranged uponthe carnage, a pump operated -rorn the wheel of the carriage and adapted to elevate oil frointho reservoir to said chamber, a horizontal outlet ipe arranged adjaf' cent to the top of said c amber, u per and 50 lower branch pipes leading from t e outer end of said horizontal outlet pipe, the upper'. branch forming an overiiow pipe to return oil to the reservoir-and the lower branch being adept'ed to d'echerge oil upon'the track 55 wheel and a controlling valve arfor sai ranged in said lower branch.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
