.\Iy invention relates to that class of yieldable wheels in which an independently rotatable rim section is frictionally connected by suitable clamping means to an inner wheel section, 'and more articularly to improvements in the type indicated in my ending application, Ser. No. 401,017, filed November 6th, 1907.
The main objects of my present invention are to more perfectly secure and maintain the proper centering of the separately movable rini section upon the inner section, by providing for a satisfactory connection bctween t-lie sections inde )endently of the frictioiial clamping means heretofore employed; and also to so improve the frictional connection between the sections as to insure more satisfactory operation and reduced labor and cost for maintenance.
The invention is fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and its novel features are specifically pointed ont in the claims.
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view, on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, of a complete wheel cmbaodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a face view of the same, a portion of one clamping plate being broken away to show thc junction of the sect-ions. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the independently connected wheel sections, before the frictional clamping means shown in F ig. 1 are applied thereto.
In the drawings ay represents an inner wheel lsect-ion of circular form, provided as' shown with a central screw-threaded opening E' for securing the same to a shaft: c is the outer or rim section rotatably mounted upon the periphery of the inner section r.: d are oppositcly arranged annular clamping plates covering the circular junction of the sections; and e. areclamping bolts passed tiansversely through the plates (l d and inner section a; these elements being similar in general form and arrangement to those shown in my rior application referred to, but differing t ierefrom in important features as hereafter described.

In my prior construction the rim section c is centered upon and rotates on the periph- `cry of the inner section (1, but the two sections, being connected only through the frictional clampino' means, are held only bythe latter', and are iablc in practice to he slightly displaced and subjected to strains which tend to vary the uniform frictional resistance intended to be provided by the clamping means, and to necessitate attention which it is highly important to avoid. In overcoming these dilliculties I provide in the first place for independently connecting the two sections in proper relative position, this being accomplished as shown by providing racegrooves in the opposed peripheries a.' c' of the two sections, into which a series of antifriction balls f is introduced, one at `a time, through 'a suitable lateral opening f; said balls, when in place, serving to connect the outer section' c to t-he inner section a in pro )er concentric and lateral positions, wh' e at the same time insuring easvwrotation of one section upon the other. With the sections thus independently' connected the function of providing uniform frictionalresistance to t te rotary movement of one scction upon the other is provided for as follows: The annular clamping plates d d, which are preferably made of hard bronze metal adapted for direct frictional contact with the. movable wheel section c, are formed with flanges d at their inner peripherics and are accurately bored to fit upon circular shoulders ior offsets c2 a.2 formed upon the opposite faces of the section a.. The outer portions of the plates which overlap the riin section c, are cach provided on their inner faces, as shown, .with an annular friction projection or bead d2 adapted to fit a corresponding annular recess c2 1n the opposing rim-section face. The two plates d d are rigidly connected to the inner section ay by the transverse clamping bolts e, and are at the same time pressed into frictional engagement with the rim section c to provide proper frictional resist-ance to separate rotary movement of the latter. Provision is made for proper lubrication by forming grooves d3 in the contact-ing friction surfaces, connecting with the chambers g formed between the plates and the wheel sections, to which. chambers the lubricant may be introduced through a suitable opening h.
The advantages of my improved construct I'r tion as previously pointed out will be readily seen, and the preferred construction specifically sliomi and described may be modified itithin thefspirit of my invention.
1. A. wheel comprising a circularinner section, a separately rotatable riin section and anti-friction balls entered in opposing peripheral race-grooves in said Sections, oppositely arranged annular clamping plates covering the circular unctioii line of the two sections, and transverse clamping bolts whereby one of said sections is rigidly connected to said plates and the ot-her section yieldingly conconnected to said plates and the outer sec-` tion yieldingly connected to the saine by `frictional engagement with vthe portions thereof overlapping said outer section sub'- stantially as set forth.

Awheel comprising a circular inner section, a separately rotatable riin section and anti-friction balls entered in opposing peripheral race-grooves in said sections, oppositely arranged annular clamping plates covering'the circular unction line of the two sections and having flanged inner peripheries fitted upon Ycircular offsets on the opposite faces of the inner section, and transverse clamping bolts rigidly connecting said inner section to said pates, the meeting faces of the outer section and of the plate portions overlappinlr said section being provided with fitted annu ar projections and grooves adapted to provide frictional connection between tliein substantially as set forth.
