GAS-ENGINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 4, 1968.
Apnmnmion filed August 27, 1926. Serial No. 332,033.
T all whom i t may concern:
Be it known that I, Wnmusa L. MoRRow, a
citizen of the United States and a resident of the city of Stockton, county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Engines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip on of the same, such as will enable others slCElc-d in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to ahe accompanying drawings, and the characaers of reference marked thereon, which fornn a part of this application.
My invention relates to improvements in gas engines and particularly to devices of this class known as two-cylinder engines, and has for its object to improve she construction and to increase the cll-icieru-qv and utility in devices of this character: These objects I accomplish by a cylinder hsvinga. solid par- -tition wall dividing said cylinder into two distinct chambers provided with an improved port mechanism and a separnrc compression air chamber arranged thereadmve, al as will appear by a perusal of the tlollowmg specification and claims.
In the drawings similar chaaractersof reference indicate corresponding parts in the several view.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my i1n-' proved engine. Fig. 2 is a Longitudinal section of the said engine on the line xa: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a verticalsecrion of the said engine.
The improved engine comprises two cylinders 11 open at their outer ends and with the inner ends closed as at: -1-1, the confronting faces of the closures each having a half bearing to receive a slush 2-5, the latter provided with cranks Z6i']' The cylinders are supported upon a bed 2 and rising from the bed are standards 2930 for supporting the shaft outside the cranks. The outer cnds of the c 'linders preferably reduced and provided res ecel v with oppositely-disposed guide-wa ls 2, while similar guide slots 33' are arranged in the upper sides of the reduced pornons. The interiors of the cylinders Iorm semarate cylinders denoted respectively 6" chamber portions of the (cylinders water jackets 77' are arranged, assh own. llork ing in the chamber 5 is a piston 8 having a rod 9 provided with a cross head 10 extending out through the slots ZQaand 11 is a similar piston working in the chamb r 6 and having a rod 12 provided with cross head 13 extending through the slots 2.
H are driving rods secured to the cross cranks 26- 27. s .7
16 is a compressing air chamber cominuni-r eating with the chambers 5 and 6 by means of ports 17, 17' and provided with heads 31 and 32. 18 is a piston working in said chainber 16 and provided with a rod 19 connected to the pistons S and 11 by means of vertical rods 20, 20 extending through the slots or guides 3, 3 and the rod 19 passing through suitable stufling boxes in the heads 31-32.
21 21 are open exhaust ports located in the sides of the cylinders 1 1' and leading from the chambers 5 and 6, said ports being a trifle nearer the closures 4 4 than are said intake ports 17.
22is a mixer pipe connected to the chamber 16 by means of intake check valves 23.
'24 '24 are the usual jump sparks connected into the chambers 5 and 6.
in using my improved engine the check valves 23 are regulated to permit a suilicient amount of explosive mixture to enter the cein pressing chamber 16. Then when the }pistons 5 and 6 are operated the exhaust ports 21 are opened an instant before the intake ports 17 are uncovered thus allowing the exhaust of the gases. Then one of the intake )orts 17 opens and the compression caused 13' the drive of-' the piston 18 causes :1 charge to enter one of the chambers 5 or 6 a the case may be and the forward drive of the piston in said chamber compresses this char e near the closure -i-l and the spark ex ilodes said compressed mixture and drives the said piston backward, and then the same 0 eration takes place in the other chamber, the explosion always taking place on the half cycle of the engine, as is evident from the described construction of the englne. By this arrangement the explosive the compres ion in the chamber 16 is always exhausted against the pistons by reason of the connecting rods 19 and it), and the compression in the chambers 5 and 6 tends to equalize the compression in such chamber 16 and thus there is always a cushion brake on the said pistons when thespark is shutoff, which causes the pistons to stop about the cen- I ter of their respective chambers thusholding l heads 10 and 13 and connecting the same to mixture is utilized to the fullest extent, and
an explosion mixture in one' of them readyi l l to explode the instant the spark is connected, thus avoiding the necessity of cranking when itis desired to start the engine.
I have now entered into a detailed description of the present embodiment ofmy invention. Many small details of construction may be modified however within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a gas engine of the class described, two cylinders having exhaust ports leading therefrom, a shaft provided with cranks, an air chamber associated with said cylinders and with parts near its ends communicatingwith said cylinders slightly in advance of the exhaust ports of the same, pistons o )erating in said cylinders, connecting means et'ween said pistons and cranks, a piston operating in said air chamber, connecting means between said air chamber piston and said. cylinder pistons, and sparkers connected to said cylinders.
2. In a gas engine of the class described, two cylinders arranged end to end and with exhaust ports leading therefrom, a shaft mounted for rotation between said cylinders and provided with cranks, an air chamber associated with said cylinders and with ports near its ends communicating with said cylinders slightly in advance of the exhaust ports thereof, pistons operating in said cylinders, connecting means between said pistons and cranks, apiston operating in said air chambers, connecting means between said air chamberpistons and said cylinder )istons, and sparkers connected to said cylinders.
3. In a gas engine of the class described, two cylinders open at one end and closed at their other ends and arranged end to end with the closed ends in contact, said cylin ders having exhaust ports and longit udinallydisposed guide slots, a shaft mounted for rotation between said cylinders and provided with cranks, an air chamber associated with said cylinders and with ports near its ends communicating with said cylinders slightly in advance of the exhaust ports thereof, pistons operating in said cylinders, crossheads operating in said guide slots,'pist-on rods between said cross-heads and the pistons of said cylind ers, driving rods between said cross-heads slightly in advance of the exhaust ports thereof, pistons operating "in said cylinders, cross-heads operating in said guide slots, piston rods between said cross-heads and the. pistons of said cylinders, driving rods between said cross-heads and cranks, a piston rod connected to said air chamber piston and extending beyond the air chamber at each end, and connecting means betweensaid air chamber piston rod and said crossheads.
5. Ina gas engine adapted to explode on the half cycle a main cylinder provided with a partition wall dividing the same into two distinct chambers, slots in the sides of such cylinder at each end thereof, pistons in said chambers, fly wheels journaled in said partition wall, suitable rods connecting said pistons to said fly wheels, and guided in said slots, slots in the top of said cylinder at each end thereof, a compression chamber arranged above said cylinder and connected to said chambers by intake ports, exhaust ports leading from said chambers at points a trifle nearer the partition wall than are said intake ports, a pistonworking in said compression chamber, rods connecting the said piston with the pistons in said chambers, said rods being guided in the said last namedslots, and means for supplying the mixture to said compression chamber and means for cooling the said cylinder and its part-s, all as set forth herein fully. r
In testimony whereof I afilx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
