INTERLOCKING CONCRETE CURB-BLOCK. ,l l
Patented Aug. 4. 1908.
Application filed March 30, 1908. Serial No. 424,209.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYDNEY-L. Davis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pensacola, in the county of Escanibia and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iii Interlocking Concrete Curb-Blocks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention relates to concrete curb blocks, and has for its object to provide a curb which may be used in connection with cement sidewalks, thus doing away with the necessity and expense of a board curbing in theinaking of the sidewalk.
Another object is to provide a curb `for a side-walk which will present a finished ap- )earance and which will serve as a gage in laying the cement walk and as a support `and protection for t-lie edge thereof.
Another object is to provide in a curb of this kind locking means to hold the saine against lateral displacement on its foundation and additional locking means to hold the curb in firm connection with the concrete sidewalk.
With these and other objects in view, myl
. in connection with a concrete sidewalk and F ig. 2 shows details of a 'variety of ways of forinin r locks on the lower face of the curb.
As siown in the drawings, the preferred embodiment of my invention comprises the curb, generally indicated by the numeral 1 which is shown on a cement foundation, 2, in connection with a sidewalk havin(r a foundation of sand or cindeis, 3, on whic i is placed a layer of concrete, 4, the layer of cement, 5, being placed on top of said concrete, all as clearly shown.\ The curb block 1 is provided with downwardly projecting locking portions, 6, adapted to be embedded in the concrete foundation of the cu`rb\block, and thereby to hold the curb block against lateral displacement.
The u er inner edge of the curb block is inwardly projecting portion is provided with i laway portion, 7, as is desirable.
, a groove, 9, extending thelength thereof,
said groove forming in connection with the lupper edge of said inwardly extending projection an upwardly extending locking rib, 10, the purpose of which will be presently explaine The outer upper corner of said curb block is rounded as at 11, to prevent scaling or chipping o'fl and to provide a finished appearance to the block.
The sidewalk to be used in connection withiny cui-b may be as follows: In preparing the sidewalk illustrated in connection with my curb, a layer of sand oi` ciiiders or other s 'uitable iiiatci'ial, 3, is first placed to substantially the height of the upwardly projecting rib, 10, and firmly rammed in place. The concrete is then spread ovei the layer, 3, and into the groove, 9, and up as high iii the cnt- Tlie vertical space of the ciit-away port-ion 7 may be provided with gage marks, 12, if desired, and the concrete, 4, may be `laid even with any one of these' gage marks as may he desired.A The cement top dressing, 5, is then placed over the concrete, 4, and finished as usual, flush withthe top of the curb block.
The curb block 1 may be huilt of any desired shape, but is preferably of the shape shown in Fig. 1, Fig. '2 showing a variety of shapes which may be used for the lower surface of the curb block.
It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the exact shape described, but reserve the right to in'ake any changes which lie within the scope and spirit of the invention.
It is thought that the use and advantage of my invention will be understood without further description.
, I'Iaving thus described my invention, what "I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A curb block provided with a cut-away portion at the inner upper edge thereof and eX- teiidiiig the length of said curb, said cnt-,away .portion forming an inward projection, a groove extending the length of the upper face of said inward projection and forming an upwardly extending rib.
2. A curb block provided with a cnt-away portion at the inner upper edge thereof and extending the length of said curb, said cutaway portion forming an inward projection, a groove extending the length of theuppei face of said inward projection and forming an Y i @95,243 A f iti \\upwa rdly extending rib, enddotri'nwardly ex. of said upWardlj)Av extending rib, another layer tending longitudinal projections on said curb of material extending over and behind said E block. upwardly extending rib, and a top layer on 15 :j

In combination, a curb block having e ,Iv top of said second-named layer; I j rounded outer upper edge and longitudinal 1, In testimony whereof I have hereunto set downward projections, a foundation for said my hand in presence of two subscribing witcurb bloc-k adop ted t'o be seated between said nesses.
