FREDERICK NUSEKABEL, OF CIXCIXXAT ST-RVINGED MUSICAL INSTRUMENT proved, its clearness of sound and resonance 15 increased, and whereby the instrument is lightened in weight and increased in stability, and the invention will be readily understood from the following description and claims, and from the drawings, in which latter:

I have illustrated my invention applied to a violin which is hollow.
A represents the body of the violin, B the neck thereof, and C the finger-board.
D is the tailpiece for the strings, attached to the violin in any ordinary manner, and E represent the strings which pass over the bridge F and the finger-board .and are wound about keys G in the head H of the instrument.
The neck is hollowed or formed with a cavity, as shown at I, this hollowing or cutting away being accomplished so as to leave a wide opening 5. communicating with the hollow body A of the instrument, and an upper opening i, there being a wide throat *i between said openings. The forward wall '5 of this throat is preferably located forwardly of l the rear end of the upper opening 6. This cavity is preferably so formed as to leave but slight substance in the neck, as shown at i. The linger-board, which otherwise is preferably of usual construction, is provided with a cavity K, which in cross-section and form coincides substantially with the cros section and form of the upper opening 2'. of the cavit y of the neck, leaving preferably only a reduced cross-scction c at the top and sides of the finger-board.

ceive d against the forward wall i of the throat of the neck, adjacent the bottom of said wall, and by the rear block (L of the body A, adjacent the upper edge of said block, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the rod being preferably glued in place. The throat opens upwardly into the upper opening at of the cavity of the neck for directing the sound from the body of the instrument into the cavity in the fingerboard, and vice versa.
The violin or other similar instrument to which my invention is applied and the finger board, are preferably constructed, of the usual woods of which such instruments are usually constructed, and my invention enables extremc lightness to be obtained 111 the instrument, as Well as the tone .to be 1mproved, while also providing a strong construction.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:
1. In a stringed musical instrument, the combination, with the hollow body, of a neck having a cavity formed with'an opening into the hollow of said body and also with an upper opening with a throat between said openings, and a finger-board having a cavity therein in its bottom coinciding in area substantially with said upper opening in the cavity of -said neck, said cavity in the bottom of said finger-board being closed at its ends upon said neck and extending above the said neck and communicating through said upper opening with said cavity in said neck and through the latter and said throat with the hollow of said body, substantially as described. I
2. In a stringed musical.instrument, the combination, with the body, of a neck having a cavity formed with an opening into said body and an upper opening with a throat between said openings, said throat having a forward wall situated forward of the rear end of said upper opening, and a reinforce rod extending longitudinally of said musical instrument and secured to the upper part of the rear end of said body and the lower partof said forward wall, substantially as described.
3. In a stringed musical instrument, the combination, with the body, of a neck having a cavity formed with an opening into said body and an upper opening with a throat be tween said openings, said throat having a tending longitudinally of said musical instrunient and secured to the upper part of the rear end of said body and the lower art mg a bottom cavity substantially coinciding in area and position with said upper opening,
