Be it known that I, FRANK P. PFLFJGHAR, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut,-have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mechanical Seals, of which the following is a specification.
)ly invention relates to a mechanical seal with the object in view of providing a simple and effective seal which may be securely locked without the use of an press or other implement than the seal itself.
A practical ennbodimentl of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of the seal in side elevation, showing in full lines, the position of the parts when the seal is locked and in dotted lines the )osition of the shackle before the seal is loc 'ed, Fig. 2 is a section taken longitudinally through the seal in a plane transverse to the front and back of the seal and showing the shackle in edge elevation, Fig. 3 is a. top plan view of the sealshowing the parts in the position which they assume when the seal is locked, Fig. 4 is ay plan view in det-ail of the locking piece, Fig. 5 is a plan view in detail of the end of the shackle to be locked, and Fig. 6 is a. section similar to Fig. 2 showing the parts in the position which t'he r assume when the free or locking end o the shackle is inserted into the lock casing and is withdrawn for locking it in position.
That. part of the shackle which is permanently fastened to the lock casing is denoted by 1 and the free end or locking branch of the shackle is denoted by 2.
In the present instance, the free or locking branch of the shackle 2 is provided near its end with a plurality of elongated openings 3 and 4, each of which is intended to receive a tongue for locking the end within the casing.
The lock casing is denoted by 5 and may be struck from sheet metal in a single piece if so desired and bent. into a flattened oblong form with its top raised as at 6 to give sufficient room for the play of the operating parts and with one end through which the parts of the shackle extend left open as at 7. folded over portion 9 is in like manner provided with tongues 12 and 13 struck from its surface in such position that their free ends will be normally extended underneath the free ends of the tongues 10 and 11, as clearly shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 6. For purposes of additional strength, I prefer to locate these tongues outof transverse alinement although this is not necessary and it is obvious that the number of tongues is a matter of choice as one or more than two might obviously be employed in the same manner as the two are herein employed. It will be noted that the elongated openings 3 and 4 in the end 2 of the shackle are also out of transverse alinement` to correspond to the positions of the free ehdsof the tongues\10 and 11.
The spring piece 8 as ywell as the part 1 of the shackle are to belirmly secured to the easing as, for example, by`a rivet 14 passing through the casing, the part 1 and the body of the spring piece 8.
In operation, when it is desired to lock the seal, the free end 2 of the shackle is inserted in the opening 7 and passes along between the top of the casing and the tongues 10 and 11 until the openings 3 and 4 have been brought into'position above the free ends of the tongues 10 and 11, when the free ends of the tongues will spring u )wardly into the openings 3 and 4 and a bac pull on the part 2 will force the tongues 10 and 11 through. the openings 3 and 4 until the extreme end of the part 2 has passed the free ends of the underlying tongues 12 and 13 when the latter will spring upwardly again into engagement with the under sides of the free ends of the tongues 10 and 11 thereby securely retaining the end 2 of the shackle against displacement. It will be observed that any inward push on the part 2 of the shackle will simply force the end underneath the tongues 12 and 115, while any outward pull will force the end underneath the tongues 10 and 1l.
'l` he structure is an extremely simple one, requiring. in its construction only the three parts, the casing, the shackle and the spring piece or lock exclusive of such fastening means as may be employed, for example, a rivet, and furthermore, it will be observed that the seal occupies but little space, the casing being flat on one side and only slightly raised on the opposite side.
IYhat I claim is:-
1. A. mechanical seal comprising a locking piece having oppositely directed tongues partially severed from the locking piece and extending in a slant-ing direction therefrom and over the spaces left by the raising of the tongue from the bodyof the piece, the end of one tongue rojecting beneath the end of the oppositely c irected tongue, a easing Within which the locking piece is secured and a shackle having one end permanently secured to the casing and the op )osite end provided with an opening and adapted to enter the casing and to receive onel tongue through the opening While the oppositely directed tongue springs over its end.
2. A mechanical seal comprising a locking piece provided with a plurality of spring tongues projecting therefrom in a slanting direction, a plurality of spring tongues projecting therefrom in an opposite direction with their free ends underlying the aforesaid spring tongues, the said tongues being partially severed from the locking piece and occupying positions over the spaces left in the bodyv of the locking piece by the raising of the tongues therefrom, a casing for receiving the said locking piece and a shackle having one end permanently secured to the casing and the opposite end provided with opens 1 r ings adapted to receive certain of said spring tongues While permitting certain other of said tongues to pass over the end of the shackle.
3. A mechanical seal comprising a. locking piece provided with a plurality of spring tongues .proeeting in a slantingv direction from its face and out of transverse alinement, the said locking piece being further provided with spring tongues extending in an o )posite direction outwardly from its face and out of transverse alinenient, a casing for receiving the said looking piece and a shackle, one end of which is securely made fast to the casing and thel opposite end is provided with openings out of transverse alinement for the y reception of certain of said tongues on the loeknig piece while certain othervof said tongues pass over the end of the shackle.
