Be it known thatl, WILLLrM A. Goocn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrenceburg, in the `county of Lawrence, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- S ark Arresters; and Ido hereby dec-lare the o llowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. The presen-t. invention has reference to spark-arresters, and it aims to provide an exceedingly simple, inexpensive, andeiiective device designed for attachment to the smokestack of a locomotive and adapted to check the passage of live s arks and cinders therethrough and divert t em into a sup lemental ipe, whence they are discharge( into the re-box at the yrear of the locomotive. The invention further resides in the provision in connection with the above-men-- tloned discharge-pipe, of an exhaust fan, by means of wluc 1- the' sparks and cinders are ositively drawn? thereinto from the main aflle carried by the arrester, and are blown through said ipe.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 5 generally designates the locomotive, whose smoke-stack 6 has secured thereto, towards its upper end, the arrester 7, into which latter the stack extends a slightl distance, as shown.

From the foregoing description, it will be a iparent that the cinders which have fallen t rough the main baille will be drawn by the action of the rotary fan' through the pipes 9 and 10, and finally discharged directly into the lire-bex ll, to be reheated, thus not only consequent danger of i'iies, but also cilecting and of partially consumed cindcrs to the iirebox.
In additioii'to the several deilectingbaffles alreadyr described, there may be'provided, if desirer, lan additional'baflle which is in the nature of .a series of rings .22 secured to the wardly towards the corresponding rings 15 which forin the niain baflle, the two sets of rings dovetailing, to a certain extent, as shown in Fig. 1. .2, A spark-4 arrester, comprising an inshaped nia-in .baille disposed within the casing in spaced relation thereto, to provide a vertical chamber between the baille and the inner face of said casing, said baille consist# ing of a series of spaced concentric rings conanother; and a series of perforated sup lenient-al bailles disposedone above the ot er within the niain baille and adapted to deflect the sparks through the openings between said rings.

A-spark-arrester, comprising an inverted frusto conical casing; shaped main baille disposed within the cas ing in spaced relation thereto, to provide a vertical chamber between the baille and the inner face of said casing, said baille consist# ing oi a series of spaced concentric downa series of supplemental baiiles disposed one above the other within the inain baille, each of said supplemental bailles being provided with a series of outwardly inclined circular Qtongues adapted to deilect the sparks through 4the openings between said rings.
