Application filed January 25, 1908. Serial No. 412,619.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN VICTOR V cK- SELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at -Mediapolis, in the county of Des'Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Lifting and Lowering Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an apparatus for raising and lowering pumps, and has for its ob ect the provision of means for facilitating the hoisting or raising of a'pump out of a well or the replacing or adjustment thereof in the same.
Another object of theinvention is the 'construction of a pump raising and lowering apparatus, which comprises a minimum number of parts, is comparatively simple to operate, and inexpensive to manufacture. With these and other objects in view, the lnvention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. p

Referring to the drawings by, numerals, 1 designates a platform provided with a bifurcated portion 2 formed in its front end, between the sides of which the pump or tube 3 is positioned, when the apparatus is in operation. A vertical standard 4 is positioned upon the platform 1, and is seated. in a bracket 5; the bracket 5 comprises a hollow body ,6 and outwardlyextending feet or flanges 7. The feet or flanges 7 aresecured to the platform, and as the standard .4 is secured Within the hollow body of a the bracket 5, said platform and standard are fixedly secured together. A vertical bracket 8, provided with parallel, vertical end-portions 9, is fixedly secured, at its lower end, by any suitable fastening means, as for instance, bolt 10, to the standard 4', and its upper, Vertical end 9 is apertured .for receiving a horizontal bolt or shaft 1 1, which bolt or shaft 1 1 is provided with an outer, bifurcated end 12. A lever 14 is pivotally mounted upon the bolt 11 between the: bifurcated end 12 and the vertical bracket 8. The lever 14 is provided upon opposite sides of said bolt 11 with a plurality of apertures 15. In one of the apertures upon each side of the bolt or sup orting shaft 11 is positioned, preferably, a c ain 16, to-the lower end of which are attached a grapple 17. Each grap 1e '17 having positioned in the aperture or portion 19.
The leverage can be increased or decreased by positioning the chains 16, constituting connecting means, in different apertures in the lever at the side of the bolt or shaft 11.
The rod-supporting device of my apparatus comprises a bolt or supporting-member 20, upon which is ivotally mounted the eye or lower aperture -end 21 of the pivotallymounted bracket 22. The bracket 22 is provided with a vertical body terminating at its upper end in a horizontal extension 23, w ich extension 23 is provided, at its outer end, with a vertical extension or lug 24. To the horizontal portion 23, any suitable fastening means may be attached for securing the pump-rod in a raised or adjusted position, preparatory to joining or connecting 1 its lower ends with another section or with an additional piece of the rod. When the apparatus is not in use, the pivotally-mounted bracket 22 can be swung rearward, so as to place the horizontal portion 23 below the pivot,constituted by the bolt 20. The forward pivotal movement of the bracket 22 is limited by a pin or lateral, horizontal projection 25 secured to the same side of the standard 4, upon which the extended end of the bolt 20 projects; the in or sto 25 is placed near the front end of said ace for permitting the bracket to swing slightly forward and be retained in said position when the apparatusis in operation.
' The, clamp-device comprises a rimary jaw 26 and an auxiliary jaw 27. he jaws 26 and 27 are, preferably, connected at their rear end by a bolt 28, said jaws being placed in a horizontal position for permitting their roughened or toothed portions-29 to grip the pi e or pump 3. The primary jaw 26 18 provl ed with ajtongue or tenon 30, which extends into the bifurcated end of the auxiliary jaw 27 A suitable fastening member, as for instance, bolts 31, extends through the auxiliary jaw 27 and into the latform 1, thereby securing jaw 27 to said p atform and preventing pivotal movement thereof, although the primary aw 26 is pivotally mounted upon said latform and the auxiliary jaws. The auxi iary jaw 26 is provided with 'a vertical aperture 32, and with a thumb-bolt or set-screw 33. The thumbbolt or set screw 33 has its inner end (Fig. 4) extending into the vertical aperture 32. An auxiliary lever 34 is pivota ly mounted, at 35, upon the front end of the auxiliary jaw 27. The lever is adapted to be swung in a vertical plane for actuating the link 36, which link is pivotally connected to said lever, at 37. The lever 34 is provided with a grip or foot-engaging portion 38, disposed, preferably, at right-angles to the body portion of the same. upon the operator engaging the foot-portion 38 and swinging the lever outward and downward, the link 36 will be drawn towards the auxiliary jaw 27, and thereby causing or permitting jaw 26 to be closed upon the pi e or pump. The link 36 is provided witli an elongated, hollow body, and with an apertured end 39 into which is threaded the angle-bolt 40. The link 36 has, at its opposite end, a flat extension or lip 41, through which the rivet or fastening means 37 extends. The angle-bolt or hook 40 is provided with-a vertical portion 42, which vertical portion is provided with a notch or cutout portion 43, into which the inner end of the thumb-bolt or set-screw extends for holding said hook or angle-bolt and link connected to the primary jaw 26. If it is desired to disconnect the link and the anglebolt or hook 40 from the primary jaw 26, it is only necessary to thread the bolt or setscrew 33 outward, so that the angle-bolt or hook 40 can be raised from in engagement with the primary jaw.
When the apparatus is to be employed for lifting or lowering a pump, it is only necessary to detach the angle-bolt or hook 40 from the primary jaw and insert said pipe or pum between the bifurcated sides of the platform, causing the jaws to be placed upon opposite sides of the pipe. Then the operator can place the vertical portion 42 of the hook or angle-bolt 40 in the aperture 3 of the primary aw and fasten the same therein by means of the set-screw 33. Then the operator should swing the lever 14 upon the supporting-shaft or bolt 11, after the grapples 17 ave been laced upon the pump or pipe, and as the ever is swung, the grapples will alternately grip the pipe or pump and lift the same. If it is desired to hold the pipe or pump in an adjusted position, all that is necessary is for the operator to place his foot It will be obvious thatthe combination with a support, of a pair oi upon the portion 38 or upon the body por tion of the auxiliary lever and swing the same downward, thereby causing the jaws to grip the pipe tightly. Any suitable fastening means can be employed for attaching the pump-rod to the pivoted bracket 22, as before stated.
It is to be noted that I have provided a very ellicient structure for raising and lowering the pumps or device, and also have provided a small foot-actuated clamp-device for holding the pump after the grapple-device has been employed for lifting the same. WVhen it is desired to lower a pump or pipe, the same is placed in substantially the same position illustrated in Fig. 1, and by pressing downward upon the lever 34, the pipe or pump'can be gripped during the placing of the grapples upon the pipe or pump, prior to the loosening of the pressure upon the lever 34 then the pipe can be lowered the distance. allowed by the slack in the chain or connecting means 16. The positioning of the grapples higher up on the pipe or pump, each succeeding time, will permit the pump or pipe to be quickly lowered into the well.
What I claim is:
1. In an apparatus of the class described,
jaws carried by said support, one of said jaws provided with an aperture, lever means carried by said support, and means pivotally connected to said lever means and positioned in the aperture of said. jaw for drawing the last-mentioned jaw towards the other jaw when said lever means is swung.
2. I11 an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a support, of jaws carried by said support, one jaw being capable of movement relative to the other jaw, a lo ver pivotally connected to one jaw, a link pivotally connected at one end to said lever, said link provided with a hollow body, a hook threaded through one end. of said link and having a portion extending into said hollow body, said hook having a portion extending into one jaw, and means fastening the extended portion of the hook in said jaw.
3. In an apparatus of the class described,
the combination with a support, of a stationary aw carried by said support, of a movable jaw cooperating with said stationary jaw, said movable jaw provided with an aperture, a hook extending into said aperture, a thumbbolt or set-screw threaded into said jaw and into engagement with said hook for preventing the same from being displaced oil of said jaw, and means engaging said hook for drawing together or moving the jaws apart.
4. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a platform or support, of a clamp-device carried by said. platform, said clamp-device comprising jaws movably connected, a link provided with an adjustable hook, at one end, the hook extending into one of said. jaws, and means carried by the other jaw and being capable of actuating said link for adjusting the jaw carrying the link.
