Description
ANTON SCHAD, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
SUSPENDERS.
Specication of Letters Patent.
`Application led September 9,V 1907. Serial No. 392,081.
To all whom it may concern: l
Beit known that I, ANTON ScHAD, citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield,
.in the county of Richland and State of Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the folowing is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined suspender link and pencil holder.
The objects of my invention are to provide a means of holding and retaining a pencil or the like upon a suspender to permit the wearer to have ready and convenient use of the pencil when desired.
It comprises a link made of suitable material with holders formed on one or both sides of the link to retain the pencil or the like in a convenient place when not in use.
Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout several views.
I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which A Figure 1 is a front plan view of my device showing two ordinary pencils inserted in the holding devices. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the combined link and holders showing the shape of the blank before bending or looping into shape. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view of my device showing the method of looping the ends, of the blank and its relation to the other parts when combinedv together for the purpose intended.
In the construction of my link and pencil holder, I prefer to form the blank (l) out of leather substantially of the shape shown. The web 2 of the suspender is looped in the ordinary 'manner and a bail 3 suspended thereby in the usual way.- The outwardly projecting portions 4 and 5 of the blank are not made at right angles with the body portion 1 but depend downward at a slight inclination therewith so that when they are folded together they form holding devices 6 and 7 having ta ered apertures into which the encils 8 an 9 are inserted and retained in p ace.
The purpose of forming the holding device I with tapered apertures 1s to permit the pencil to be inserted in the aperture easily and without inconvenience and at the same time provide means of frictionally holding the pencil in place by making the lower end of the orifice slightly less in diameter than the ordinary pencil whereby close frictional contact can be maintained at all times between the outer periphery of the pencil or the like and the innerperiphery of the apertures. This construction permits of rapid insertion but is not absolutely essential. In assembling the link for the purpose of attaching it to the bail 3 the horizontal arms 4 and 5 are made to overlap each other forming the holding devices 6 and 7 as shown in Fig. 1 and the upper ortion 10 is passed around the horizontal ar of the bail 3 and turned down on the arms 4 and 5, and the overlapped parts are securely connected together y means of the combined rivet and button 11 which passes through suitable apertures formed in theA rojecting portions described. A button c asp 12 is securely attached to the portion 13 of the blank and when the end 13 is looped the clasp is adapted to engage with the button 11 forming a loop 14 to suspend the suspender strap 15.
I prefer to make the blank integral and of leather but it is apparent however that it can be made of two or more pieces and of elastic material without departing from the' principle ofvmy invention.
Having Jfully described my invention wha I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l l. A suspender end comprising a link adapted to connect with a strap and rovided with means on each side thereo for holding a pencil or the like as and Jfor the purpose set forth.
2. An article of manufacture comprising a link for a suspender end adapted to connect with a suspender strap, outwardl)T extending wing portions formed on and at an incline to the bod portion of the link to provide p epered ho ding means for a pencil or the 3. The combination of a suspender link and holding means for a pencil or the like Comprising a blank formed substantially cross shape to provide means to connect wlth Patented Aug. 4, 1908.
a suspender strap and form pockets thereon form vtapered apertures for the purpose set as described and set forth. forth. l0
4. In a eneil holding device for suspend- In testimony whereof I a'I'Iix my signature ers, a blan formed substantially to conform in presence of tWo Witnesses.

arms formed at aninclination to the body Witnesses:
