To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERNEST LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Road- Grader, of which the followingis a specification.

The object ofthe invention is to provide a road grader at its forward edge with a concaved plate adapted to cut the material at the surface of the road and assist in casting the same laterally and a vertically disposed plate at the rear end of the grader forthe purpose of packing the surface of the road with the material previously loosened 'by the ate.

p A further object of the invention is to provide a fender plate at the forward portion of the frame of the grader for the purpose of preventing the loosened material from riding up over and upon the frame of the grader.

A still further object of the invention isto provide runners of peculiar configuration and located at the forward portion of the frame of the grader for the purpose of regulating the depth at which the concaved plate will operate in the surface of the road.

The grader consists of the frontangle beam 1 and the rear angle beam 2 whichare connected together at their upper ends by the channel beams 3 and foot boards 4. The strip of angle iron 5 isattached to the lower forward edge of the front beam land the concaved plate 6 is attached to the upper portion of the front beam 1 and bears at its lower portion against the strip of angle iron 5. The fender-plate 7 is; attached to the forward side of the forward beam 1 and lies be tween the said beam 1 and the concaved plate 6.

The upper portion of the fenderplate 7 projects above the channel beams 3 located upon the forward portions of the outer channel beams 3 and the runners 9 are pivotally mounted in the said bearings. The upper portions of the said runners lie in planes parallel with the direction in which the beams 3 extend while the lower portions ofsaid runners are twisted into planes at right angles to their upper portions and are curved as at 10. The curved portions 10 of the said runners are adapted to bear upon the surface of the ground. The levers 11 are pivotally attached to the rear end portions of the channel beams 3 and the links 12 pivotally connect the upper ends of the runners with the said levers. The gear segments 13 are mounted upon the beams 3 adjacent the levers 11 and the pawl mechanisms 14 are carried by the said levers and are'adapted to engage the said gear segments. The seat post 15 "is erected upon the intermediate channel beam 3 and the seat 16 is mounted upon the upper end of the said seat post. The end channel beams 3 are provided with clevises 17 to which the draft chain 18 is attached.

- The operation of the grader is as follows :It is drawn along the surface of'the road at any desired angle by hitching the draft animals at anypoint along the chain 18. By manipulatingthe levers 1 1 the lower ends of the runners 9 may be raised or lowered so as to regulate the depth at which the concaved plate 6 will cut into the surface of the road. The

material that is cast up by the plate 6 is prevented from being deposited upon the rear 0r topportion' of the grader by the fender plate 7. The material that is cut or loosened by the plate 6 is packed at the surface of the road by'the rear beam 2.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2-- 1. A road grader comprising a frame having at its forward edge a cutting plate and at its rear portion a soil packing beam, runners pivotally mounted at the forward portion of the frame and means for swinging the runners toraise or lower the forward portion of thelframe.
