MOSES W. UB'AN, OF STERLING, PENNSYLVANIA.
FLOWER-POT.
Specification of Letters .Patent.
Patented Aug. 4, 1908.
Application filed December 5, 1907. Serial No. 405.238.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known" that I, MOSES W. UBAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterl ling, in the county of Wayne'and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flower-Pots, of
Y which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to flower pots, and more particularly to pots suitable for containing young plants prior to transplanting, and has for its object to provide a pot of detachable sections, peculiarly adapted to the facile handling of tender plants in transplanting.
Other objects are: to provide such an article of simple structure, which will be durable, cheap and easy to manufacture from stock material.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the accom anying description, and it will be understoo that changes 1n the specific form shown and described may be made within the scopeof the claims without de arting from the spirit of the invention.
n the drawings accompanying this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pot,
Fig. 2 is a plan of the wall blank, Fig. 3 1s a detail of the bottom section, Fig. 4 is a modified form of the invention, showing means for securing the walls a ainst unfolding, Fig. 5 is a plan of the wall 10 ank showing the fastening means attached, Fig. 6 is a sectional view, showing the operation of the fastening means at the top, Fig. 7 is a similar View near the base, Fig. 8 is a detail of the bottom section in the modified form;
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a receptacle comprising a wall section 10 formed from a blank or sheet of metal or other suitable material, bent to form a cylinder, the meeting end ortions being overla ped. The cylindrical wall section fits into a ottom section 11, which consists of a floor portion 12 having a vertical wall 13 integral therewith and extending around its edge. In the floor 12 there are'a series of perforations 14, to allow draina e of water from the contents of the rece tarfie. When made of tin or other materia of suflicient stability, small pots of this pattern will require no special provision for resisting pressure from 7 within, which will tend to cause the overlapped portions of the wall section to separate nor to hold the bottom section in place.
secured upon the outer overlapping end portion 16 of the wall section by means of a rivet 17 which extends through the wall section and has an inwardly projectin end portion 18, the purpose of which wil be presently indicated. The tongue 15 extends longitudinally of the wall blank, and projects beyond the adjacent vertical edge, and is engaged through a perforation 19 formed in the o posite end portion 20 of the wall blank. The inwardly projecting portion 18 of the rivet17 is enga ed through a corresponding erforation 18 1n the end portion 20 of the lank, which is adjacent to the perforation 19. The engagement of the tongue 15 and the projecting portion 18 of the rivet 17 in projecting pin 23 is secured upon the blank near its lower edge midway of the ends.
The wall 13 of the bottom section 11 of the modified form is provided with oppositely located slots 24 extending downwardly from the edge and having lateral extensions 25 at their lower portions. The pins 22 and 23 are engaged respectively in the slots 24 at the inner extremities thereof, serving to retain the bottom section in place, and being arranged for twisting disengagement therefrom.
When it is desired to remove a plant from the pot, the perforation 18 is disengaged from the projecting portion 18 of the rivet 17, which allows the tongue 15 to be released from the perforation 19, and the adjacent overlapped portions to be disengaged by a sliding movement. The bottom section is thengiven a slight twist to bring the pins 22 and 23 beneath the vertically extending portions of the slots 24, when the bottom section may be disengaged from the wall section by pulling it downward. The wall section may then be unfolded from around the earth and roots of the plant, allowing them to be disengaged from the pot without being strained or bruised.
What is claimed is:
1. A flower pot comprising an unfoldable wall section formed of a sheet of flexible material bent to present two of its opposite edge portions in overlapping engagement, a tongue carried by one of the overlapped edge portions and projecting beyond the adjacent vertical edge of the sheet, a rivet engaged through the tongue and sheet and having a projecting end portion, the other overlapped edge portion being provided with spaced perforations therethrough in which the tongue and projecting portion of the rivet are detachably engaged to hold the said overlapped portions of the wall section against separation, a bottom section comprising a floor and an integral vertical wall extending around -the edge thereof said bottom section having its Wall detachably engaged over one end of the wall section to hold said wall section against unbending, and means for holding the bottom section in such engagement.
2. A flower pot comprising an unfoldable wall section formed of a blank of flexible material bent to present two of its opposite edge portions in overlapping engagement, a tongue carried by one of the overlapped edge portions and projecting beyond the adjacent vertical edge of the blank a rivet engaged through the tongue and blank and having a projecting end portion, the other overlapped edge portion being provided with spaced perforations therethrough in which the tongue and projecting portion of the rivet are detachably engaged to hold the said overlapped portions of the wall section against separation, a pin carried midway of the blank n \ar its lower edge, a second pin carried by the underlapped edge portion of the blank near its lower corner, a perforation in the opposite overlapped portion of the blank engaged over the second pin, a bottom section comprising a floor and an integral vertical wall extending around the edge thereof, and having slots extending downwardly from its edge, said slots having lateral extensions at their lower portions, said bottom seetion being detachably engaged over the lower end of the Wall section with the said pins removably engaged in the inner extremities of the slots to hold the bottom section and wall section detachably in coengagement.
In testimony whereof l allix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
