WILBUR R; CORBIN, 'OF NEW BRITAINQCONNECTICUT,,ASSIGNOR TO THE CORBIN CABINET LOCK COMPANY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.-
'i KEY-DUPLICATOR.
To all lwhom 'it' may concern: a lBe it known that I, WrLrm R. CORBIN, `a citizen of the United States, and varesident of New Britain, in thecounty of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new andImproved Key-Duplicator, of'which the following is a speciiicatlon.
. My invention relates tothe class of devices used for producing duplicates of keys or like articles, and the object of my invention is to 4rovide a device of this `character that shall y e especially simple in construction .and operation; one thatsh'all be effective and accurate in its operation to reproducearticles .to exact form, and a further object of the invention is to provide a device in which duplicates may be produced with eXtreme ra idity. Forms o devices in the use of W 'ch these objects may be attained are illustrated inthe accompanying drawings,.inwhichf y Figure 1 isa view in side elevation of a duplicator embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a topV or plan view ofthe same on enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a to view of the die and blank holder villustratlng the method of operation. Fig. .4 is ay view in'end elevation of another form of device embodying the invention, the key and pattern beingcut in section andthe holder removed. `Fig.`5'is a top yor l plan view of the same shoring the holder in osition. Fig. 6 is an` e yge View of the older used, in the latter form ot' device.-
While my invention es ecially, applicable` for duplicatin keysoixthat 1pattern used in cylinder loc conta ning pin 4tum'- blers, yet it yis obvious that its ap lication may be, widely extended to articlles other than keys of this particular style, and while I l. have .illustrated and described in invention I in connection with the re roductlon of'keys,`
it will be obvious that t e invention 1s not limited to use for the production of such articles. y
In the accompanying drawings the nu- Yrneral Sdenotesa bed `from which rises a standard 9 having a head y10'. This head has.
a depthwise open1ng`11 and a s ring chamber 12.1xnjwhich` asprin f Y,13,` is ocated. This springy rests upon ythe ottom ofthe chamber and itsopposite.end'thrustsjagainst the en- Specification ofLetters Patent.
'jecting `through the --head and t `which y1s to be forme patented July 2s, 190s.
Application led March 13, l190'?. -Serial No. 862,124.
larged end 14 of a plunger l15. This plunger has a slot 16 Which receives a in 17 pro-v hrough the plunger tolimit the reciprocating movement of the latter. is' formed into a -cutter 18. The pattern ed es 1 9 of this cutter are 'of an ar shape, being so formed to produce t e 'serrated edge of a key.
In the manufacture of keys of this class all of the serrations on a single key, or on a number of keys forming a set, are of the same angular formation, that is, the two sides composing eachserration are formed, as to all of the serrations on a single key or 'asetof keys Iat the same angle each with respect tothe other. r1`he difference in the serrations are in depth only. The two sides composing the pattern edges 19 being formed at a certain angle w1th respect to 70 eachit is obvious that this cutter may be employed to. produce keys of many diierent patterns.
A die 20 is secured in the bed 8, this die having an o nin 21 registering with an 75 o ening 22 t roug the bed. What I term t effront of this vopening 21- is of angular form, as shown at 23, in Fig. 2 of the drawings, this opening being formedat the same angle as that on which the pattern edges 19 so of/the cutter 18'are formed.
For presenting the blankV andpattern to the cutter I (provide a holder 24 .having a rooye 25 anv a clamp Vplate 26. The latter orms one side of the `groove25, and is held asb` fnrneans of a clam screw 27.
T e pattern 28-isp aced u on the blank a `into a eyand the two securely clamped the groove 25. e The holder is then placed on the base 8 and 90 moved up to the plunger.
The pattern 28, which is in fact a removable 'p'artfof the holder 24.-, maybe a key, as shown herein, used .in the reproduction of reproduction as emplo ed herein it is not e intended to limit the mac ine to the making lof duplicateskbut is' intended .to include thev making of all articles froma pattern 'which may have been especially prepared klior the The lower end lof the plunger 55 this purpose by any means, Whether in the use of articular device or otherwise. It will be obvious that the im lement is equally well adapted for the proriilction of originals, 'the pattern for which may be prepared by the use of 4any well-known method. v The plunger 15 is so limited, as to its out ward movement, that a space 29 shall be left between the cutting' end of the plunger and the face of the die but slightly greater than the thickness' of the blank to be operated upon and not of an extent to equal the thick- 'ness of the blank and the pattern.-
The holder 24 is moved up to the `rcutter so that the pattern edgesI 19 shall reist within the serrat1ons'30 of. the pattern. The plunger being now forced' down it will be seen that the blank is cut with a serration the exact -counterpartjofthat against which the pattern edges 19 are placed, and the operation being repeated for each serration on the patl This head is tern an eXact duplicate as to the serrated edge Will b'e obtained. K
In the `form of the device shown in Figs. 4 to 6 inclusive the base 40 has guides 41 between which thepivoted head 42 moves. pivoted to ears v43 on the base,
and a sto 44 consisting of a screw threaded into the 'ase and secured as by a lock nut 45 provides means for, determining the distance forming the space 46 between the cutting face of the' head 42 and that of the die 47. A spring lunger 48 is held, as by means of a spring 49 lidcated in the base, against the head 42, retaining its end in enga ement with the sto 44. The end ofthe hea 42 has pattern e ges 50 the extremities of which form the cutter or cutting face of the head. These pattern edges and the opening 51 in the die 47 are of the same relatlve construction and arrangement as described with regard to the hereinbefore mentioned device. A stop 52 may be employed to limit the movement of the head in the cutting operation. In this form of the device the holderconsists of a body 53 in which is formeda slot 54 for the reception of the pattern 55 and the blank b. A clamp screw 56, projecting into the slot, is
employed for holding the blank and patternI in place. Ke s of`this general description are often provided Witha lip 57, and a recess 58 is formed for the reception of. such lip. A support 59 projects from the body 53 to back 'u the key and the blank and hold them in a inement. A handle 60 may be employed v if desired.` The manner of use of this last described device is the same as that iirst described, the pattern 5.5 being laced Vwith a serration agalnst the pattern ves es 50 of the head 42 the blank b resting in t e space between the cutting surfaces of the head and v'die. Force may be aplplied as by a' blow struck upon the end of t e head.
