DRYING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 28, 1908i.
Application filed J'uly 26, 1905. Serial No. 271,327.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT WOERNER, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at N o. 54 Luisenring, Mannheim, German Empire,` have invented a new and useful lmproved Drying Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to lan im- ,proveddevice for drying washing and consists of the details'of construction hereinafter set forth and particularly pointed out inthe claims.
In order to render the present specification easily intelligible reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views Figure l is a plan of one form of the invention, Fig. 2 a sectional elevation of the same, Fig. 3 a detail view of one of the arms of the lazy tongs, Fig. 4 a section on the line A-B of Fig. 3, Fig. 5 a vertical section through a slide block drawn to a larger scale, Fig.. 6 a similar section through a supporting block, Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a modification showing the device arranged as a stand and Fig. 8 is a part front elevation of the same.
Referring iirst to Figs. 1 to 6 which show an embodiment of the invention, which is intended to be supported in a window frame The device comprises a frame consisting of the longitudinal bars a a and the cross bars b b. An extensible spindle C has its ends reduced and extending `through the prolonged ends of the bars a a, said spindle eing extensible in the known manner by means of the sleeve and the screw spindle C and the pin d for rotating the sleeve. The reduced ends e of this s indle fit into sockets formed in the end bloc s f (Fig. 6), the exterior surfaces of which are provided with a felt or rubber layer as at g. The frame comprising the bars a, b, is supported in the window o ening by clamping these blocks between tllie walls, the soft exterior preventing any injury to the walls. At each side of the frame a set of lazy tongs fi, t, is mounted, the central pivots 7c of which extend' into slide blocks l (Fig. 5) which slide in slots m' of the arms or bars a and are provided. with inner anges n to keep the blocks in position in the slots and also to hold the lazy tongs a suitable distance apart from the bars a, and thus to prevent friction. 'Some or all of the pivots 7c except the inner ones, may be extended across from one tongs to the other forming the bars o on which the washing may be hung. The two end pivots 7c are prolonged outwardly and screw Athreaded to receive thumb nuts p by means of which one end of the tongs may be clamped in the bar a. At the forward end of the frame a spindle is mounted carrying two reels w w and a central reel y. Around the latter a cord z is wound the free end of which is attached to a hook Z mounted on the inner bar b. While cords o are attached to and wound round the reels w w and their free ends attached to eyes on the end bar o. Thus when the cord e is pulled the lazy tongs may be drawn out to the desired length by means of the reels w w being turned and winding up the draw cords. The interior surfaces of the interior levers i forming portions of the lazy tongs are recessed as shown at Figs. 3 and 4 and providedwitheyes screwed into the recesses as at q and from these eyes cords r 1 may be stretched across the frame for the suspension of clothes or the like. The whole device may be drawn up into the window 7L by means of the cord s attached to the frame at t and passing through eye u in the up er portion of the window frame.
n Figs. 7 and 8 the lazy tongs and the frame are su ported vertically on suitable feet 3, 3, the device is otherwise the same as that described with reference to Figs. 1 to 6.
lt will be obvious that the device might be supported in a variety of other ways without departing from the spirit of the invention, as
`also that the details described embrace merely embodiments, which might be varied in a great many ways.
claim as my invention:-
1. A device for drying washing consisting of a rigid frame having lazy tongs mounted therein at each side and connected up by cross bars, a spindle on which the said frame is pivotally mounted, said spindle having blocks at each end, cushions on the outer surfaces of the blocks and means for extending the length of the said spindle to clamp the blocks against the walls substantially as described.
2. A device for drying clothes and the like consisting of a rigid frame, a spindle at one end and means for clamping said spindle between two supporting walls, said frame being rotatable on said spindle, lazy tongs mounted to slide in the side bars of the same In testimony whereof I a'HiX my signature frame lnd having crosfs bars eitending in the presence of two Witnesses. across t e same, means or exten in said 1 n ,T s 1 tongs and for retaining them in the dgesired ROBILR l' XX O'DJRNLR' 5 position and' means for swinging the said Witnesses:
