Description

No. 894,525. 7 PATENTED JULY 28, 1908.
J. MOGRANIGHAN. RAILWAY TIE.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 5, 190'].
w/r/vEssag; 4 A I INVENTOR u M y y- W W? y Y 147' 7' ORA/E K JOHN MCGRANIGHAN, OF ROXBORO, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAILWAY-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 28, 1908.
Application filed December 5, 1907. Serial No. 405,189.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MGGRANIGHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roxboro, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Railway-Ties, of which the I following is a specification.
This invention relates to railway ties employing stone blocks for supporting the rails, and its leading purpose is to produce such a tie with improved means for securin the rails to the blocks and fastening the b ocks together.
The accompanying drawing represents a transverse view of a track having rails supported by my improved tie.
As shown in the drawing, the tie consists of the natural or artificial stone blocks 1 connected by metal straps comprising the horizontal sections 2 resting on top'of the blocks and supporting the rails 3, the hooks 2 with the rearwardly extending struts 2 for engaging the webs 3 and the exterior flanges 3 of the rails, the vertical sections 2 joined by the twisted sections 2 to the horizontal sections 2 and extending dia onally from the inner upper corner of one b iock to the inner lower corner of the other, the horizontal sections 2 lying beneath the blocks 1 and joined to the vertical sections 2 by the twists 2 at the lower inner ed es of the'blocks, and the sections 2 extending upwardly from the horizontal sections 2 and bearing against the outer faces of the blocks. Bolts 4 pass through the respective arts 1, 2, 2 and the clips 5, which enga etl ie inner flanges 3 of the rail bases, and olts 6 pass through the respective parts 1, 2 and 2 by which the parts are held together firmly and securely.
Ties thus formed are stable, strong, enduring and economical.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. In a railway tie, in combination with rails, blocks for supporting said rails, and straps each engaging the top of one block and the bottom of the other.
2. In a railway tie, in combination with rails, blocks for supporting said rails, straps each having integral arts of which one engages the top of one look and another engages the bottom of another block, and bolts securing together the strap parts and the blocks engaged thereby.
3. In a railway tie, in combination with rails, blocks for supporting said rails, straps having parts dis osed on top of the respective blocks andeneath the respective rails and parts disposed beneath the respective blocks, the parts of the respective straps be-' ing continuous and integral, and bolts for connecting the blocks with the respective strap Iparts.
4. n a railway tie, in combination with rails, blocks for supporting said rails, and straps respectively extending continuously from the bottom of each block to the top of the other, each strap having a part sufpporting a rail and provided with a hook or engaging the base thereof.
5. In a railway tie, in combination with rails, blocks for supporting said rails, and straps respectively provided with a part resting on top of a block and beneath a rail with a hook engaging the rail base, a part beneath the other block with an angular portion engaging the outer face thereof and a continuous connection between said parts.
6. In a railway tie, in combination with rails, blocks for supporting said rails, and straps connecting sald blocks, each of said straps comprising a horizontal part supported on top of a block beneath a rail, a
00k engaging the rail, a horizontal part su ported against the bottom of the other bloc and a vertical part integrally connected with the aforesaid parts and extending diagonally between them.
7. In a railway tie, a pair of blocks, a stra having a part secured to the top of one bloc and connected directly to the bottom of the other, said part having a hook with a reversely extending strut thereon, means for securing said strut to the corresponding block, and a rail sup orted by said part and engaged by said hook.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my name this second day of December, 1907 in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
JOHN MCGRANIGIIAN.
