WILLIAM BARDROFF, OF
BALTIMORE, MA ll YLAND.
BLACKING-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 6,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that 1, WILLIAM BARDRoFF, a citizen of the United States, residirig at Baltimore, in the'county of Baltimore'City and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Imlprovements in Blanking-Brushes, of which t e following is a specification.
This invention relates to brushes Tor'applying liquid blacking to boots, and shoes;
and it has for its object to provide an improved device of this clas's com rising a replying and distributing the li uid, a valve 'or controlling the flow of the iquid, and means for actuating the valve in a simple, convenient and efficient manner.
The invention consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and ,combination of arts which will be hereinafter fully descri ed and particularly pointed out in the claims. In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a sim lo and preferred form of the invention; it being, however, understood thatno limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited,
ut that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing, Figure '1 is a side view of a device embodying the invention, andshowing the lid or ca partly raised. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitu inal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the plane indicatcd'by line 3-3 in l i 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view talien on the plane indicated by the line 44 iniFig. 2.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The improved device includes acan or receptacle 1' made of light sheet metal and having a slightly convex resilient bottom 2 and a screw cap or cover 3. The latter is apertured for the passage of a stem 4 which extends axially through the can or receptacle and which carries at its inner end a disk or diaphragm 5 whereby it is guided within the can; said stem is also provided at its lower or inner extremity with an adjustable nut 6 adapted to bear against the inner surface of the resilient bottom 2 with which it is held in contact by the action of a spring 7 coiled upon the stem betweenthe cap 3 and the disk 5. The cap 3 is provided with ports or apertures 8 adapted to be closed by a valve 9 mounted at the upper or outer extremity of the stem 4,
. Patented July 21, 1908. 1907.. Serial No. 366,856.
and held to its seat by the tension of the spring; said valve being provided with a packing disk 10 in order to effect a tight joint.
The cap 3 is provided with a tubular extensionll in which the bristles 12 are held and bular member 13,- ilaring or funnel-shaped at its inner end'as shown at 14, and through which liquid may flow from the ports 8 when the 'valve 1s unseated- The brush, when not in use, is protected by a lid or cap 15 exteriorly en aging the tubular member 11 and having ah '16 whereby it is adapted for I'Gfit ment with the brush. A washer 17 is prefer- ;ably interposed between the cap 3 and the, upper edge of the can or containerfor the poseof making a liquid tight joint.
In 0 eration, the nut 6v is to be adjusted upon the stem 4 in such a manner that when the cap 3 is ap lied to the can the said nut will be dispose closely adjacent to, if not in actual contact with, the resilient bottom 2, but in such a manner that the valve 9 will be held upon its seat under the tension of the spring 7. thus be tightly closed by the cap 3 and the valve 9 jointly; To apply blacking, with which the container is supplied prior to the application of the'cnp, the receptacle or container is inverted after which the valve is unsealed by exerting pressure cxteriorly upon the resilient bottom, thus permitting liquid to flow lhi ough the ports 8 and the tubular passage l3 l-l to the brush, which, when sulliciently saturated, is used [or applying and spreading the him-king. When pressure upon the resilient bottom is relaxed, the
' valve will be resented by the action of the spring 7.
l It is preferred to provide the disk or diailow of liquid may not he obstructed.
This improved devil-r, as will be seen from the foregoing descriptidn, is very simple and convenient for use, and it all'ords a tight and convenient receptacle and applying device for liquid bhii'king and other liquids of a similar nature which-it is desired to guard against cvapm'ntion, and which ordinarily cannot. be readily applied ilhout danger of soiling the lingers. By this device, the liq uid may he neatly and elliciently applied; the contents is protected from evaporation; and the brush when not in use is protected from dust and injury.

- -A blacking brush comprising .a coiltamer'having a resilient bottom, a longitudinal movable spring actuated stem, a valve carried by the stem, a guide member on the stem for e agement with the container, an adjustable evice on the lower extremity of the stem, said device bearing against the under surface of the guide member, a threaded cap having ports, a tubular extension formed integral with the cap, a centrall disposed tubular member provided with a aring ortion and arranged to sup ly the blac ing from the container to the bristles, said on tion contacting with the inner surface 0 the tubular extension, Whereb the opening movement of the valve is limited.
In testimony whereofll affix my signature in presence of tWo witnesses.
