Description

THOMAS WATKINS, OF PHILADELPHIA7 PENNSYLVANIA.
GAGE-COCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1908.
Application filed August 22, 1907. Serial 110,889,665.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS WATKINS, acitizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement. in Gage-'Cocks and the Like, 'of which the following is-a specifica-V amount thereof to escape as is usual, and' which will also permit theremoval of the gage cock iproper while preventing the escape of steam the repair of the valve or other parts o the device Without the necessity of emptying the boiler of steam or Water.
l/Vith these ends in view, this invention' consists of the details of .construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims. i
In order `that those skilled in the'art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe" its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawin formino' a part of thisl speci cation, in Whic 4 igure 1 is a longitudinal section of my imrovement. Fig. 2, a section at. the line *Y of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, a section at the line X--X of 1.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, I provide a nip le A which is referably tapered havingt ethreads'B.A ormed thereon bywhich it is adapted to be screwed through the wall of the boiler. This nipple has a central opening @which communicates with the interior of the boiler and leads to the1 recess D, a portion of which is threaded as indicated at E for the reception of. the inner end of the valve plu@r F.
G represents the body of the'gage cock Which'is threaded to the outer end of the valve lug and has a central opening I formed theret `ou h' in which is fitted the valve stem J, sai stem having formed thereon the om the boiler thus providin forposition by the spring M which is coiled around the valve stemex'tension J. The inner end of the valve plug has 'formed thereon the valve'seat O, an P is a secondary valve adapted toiclose upon this seat and guided in place by -the stem P The'ou'terend of the body is threaded. as indicated -at Q for Ithe reception of the gland nut It which is .adapted to force the sleeve S against the packing S"` and thus prevent the escape of steam around the stem J.
' T represents the hand lever which is pivoted at T to a suitable' bracket T2, 'said bracket being either cast with the body or arranged to be clamped thereto as may best suit therequirements of the particular work the device is intended for.
From the foregoing description the o era,- tion of my improvement will be obvious y as follows The valve stem extension J being of suflicient length to abut against the valve stem P the valve P Will be normally held 0E its seat thus permitting the free flow of steam through the nipple and valve plug to the valve L, and as the latter is normally held closed by the s ring M no steam can pass this last named va ve until it is forced off of its seat, the latter being accomplished by forcing the hand lever inward against the valve stem J thus opening the valve K and ermitting the steam to iiow into the opening from whence it will issue through the outlet U. Upon the release of the hand lever the spring M together with the pressure of the steam will close the valve K and cut od the further flow of the steam or water. Should it become necessary to remove the age cock for repair such as regrinding the va ve K and its seat L or for other purposes the screwing off of the body from the valve plug will carry the valve stem extension J out of contact with the valve stem P thus permitting the valve P to be forced against its seat by the steam pressure Where it will be held thus preventing the outflow of the steamor Water, and when the gage cock has been re aired and replaced the va ve P will again be orced olf its seat and so held again permitting the steam or Water to iiow to the valve K. .In practice this is of great advantage since it avoids the-liability of injury to the attendant and ermits the Wh' e I have ere shown a portion of the valve stemJ and the valve stem P of triengular shape in cross section i; is obvious that they may be of any desired shaV it is obvious that the Valve K may he orovided with e fiber Washer for seating upon the valve seat L.
Hai/'ing thus fully described my invention, what i ehtirn as new and useful, is l A. gege oook composed of a three part ees ff', first a central portion having a here Jrethnmgh and reduced exteriorly threaded e forming opposite shoulders, second e ele having one end exteriorly threaded its op osito end threaded onto one of d ends ot the central portion and abutting ne of said shoulders thereof7 and third a body threaded at one end onto the other end of said central portion and abutting the other shoulder thereof said @entrai portion being?)e formed vvith a, votive seat et one end thereot, seid body' being formed with e Vewe seat intermediate its ende, end a, "waive 'for each of seid seats, t stein on each valve heffing their inner ende o rit/ting, ineens for operating seid stein in tl body, end e eoii spring engaging the 'vir-ive' 'body at one end and et oppoete end sdoutting the opposite end of Said e t ai portion.
, molly whereof, have hereunto fixed my signature in the presence oi' twesubseribing Witnesses.
