MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
Application filed December 4, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH STUART, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Mechanical Movements, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to machine elements, more particularly to a means for imparting an oscillatory movement to the receptacle of a washing machine or for other purposes wherein it is found applicable and the object thereof is to provide a simple and inexpensive means in a manner wherein a reciprocatory means is operatively connected in a manner as hereinafter described to a receptacle or other element for imparting oscillations thereto during the operation of the reciprocatory element.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construotion, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto ap ended.
In the drawings wherein li e reference characters designate corresponding parts throu hout the several views; Figure 1 is a side e evation showing the adaptation of a means for imparting oscillations in accordance with this invention in connection with the tub or receptacle of a washing machine, Fig. 2 is a front elevation partly broken away, Fig. 3 is a plan, the element which is oscillated being shown in dotted lines, Fig. 4 is a plan of the tub or receptacle, Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view illustrating a modification, Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevation of Fig. 5.
To put my invention into practice, I construct my improved operating mechanism of a suitable base embodying four legs 1 con nected together by a casting 2and further supported by a combined brace and shelf 19. Mounted in the casting 2 is a vertically disposed shaft 3 and revolubly mounted on the shaft 3 is a spider 4 and a sleeve 5 upon which the tub or receptacle 6 of the washer is mounted.

The legs 1 support a brace and shelf 7 having a conventional form of water motor 8, said motor having a reciprocating rack 9 which is employed for oscillating the tub or receptacle 6. J ournaled upon the brace and shelf 7 is a pinion 10 adapted to mesh with the rack 9, said pinion having a detachable crank arm 11, which is connected to the tub orreceptacle 6 by a pivotally mounted link 12.
The shaft 3 beneath the tub or receptacle 6 is provided with a sleeve llhaving diametrically opposed arms 15, to which coiled springs 16 are attached, said springs connecting with diametrically opposed depending straps 17 carried by the tub or receptacle 6.
The tub or receptacle 6 is oscillated by the water motor 8 through the medium of the crank arm 11 and link 12, and to limit the oscillation of said tub, I provide the casting 2 with an upwardly extending pin 18, said pin being engaged by one of the arms 15 of the sleeve 14. The springs 16 are simply employed to relieve any sudden jarring or Vibrations of the machine and to cushion the movement of the same.
In Figs. 5 and 6, I have illustrated a slight modification wherein a shaft 19 similar to the shaft 19 for connecting the legs 1 is employed and provided with an extension 20, this extension carrying a water motor 8 having a rack 9 adapted to mesh with a pinion 1O mounted directly upon the shaft 3 of the washing machine. In this modification, the springs 16 are dispensed with, also the crank arm 11 and the link 12.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that I have devised a novel construction of washing machine, operating mechanism wherein manual labor is dispensed with and a water motor employed for oscillating the machine, and causing an agitation between the clothes and the water contained in the receptacle 6.
When it is desired to oscillate the tub or receptacle by hand, the crank arm 11 and the sible by the appended claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with an oscillatory element and a base for supporting said element, of a combined brace and shelf carried by said base, a stub shaft carried by said shelf, a crank arm. carried by said shaft, a link swinging at one end from the free end of said crank arm and pivotally connected at its other end to said element, a gear wheel carried by said stub shaft, a reciprocating rack engaging said gealr wheel, and means for reciprocating said rac r.
2. The combination with an oscillatory element and a base for supporting said element, of a combined brace and shelf carried by said base, a stub shaft carried by said shelf, a crank arm carried by said shaft, a link swinging at one end from the free end of said crank arm and pivotally connected at its other end to said element, a gear wheel carried by said stub shaft, a reciprocating rack engaging said gear wheel, a cylinder carried by said shelf, and a piston oscillating in said cylinder and connected to said reciprocating rack, whereby the reciprocation of the piston will cause the oscillation of said stub shaft and the corresponding oscillation of the element.
3. The combination with an oscillatory element, of a combined brace and shelf, supporting means therefor, a crank arm, a stub shaft carrying the crank arm, said shaft supported by the shelf, a link having oneend attached to the crank arm and its other end pivotally-connected with said element, a gear wheel carried by the shaft, a reciprocatory rack engaging with and operating said gear wheel, and hydraulic means for reciprocating said rack.
