ELECTRIC REGULATION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2i, isos.
Application sied Aprii 2, 190e. serial No. soasis.
To all l'whom it may concern.'
, Be it known that I, Mouais MosKowrrz, a citizen of the United States, Vand resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain' new and useful Improvements in chine at the same time, there is a variation in voltage due to the counter electro-motive force of the storage battery. .If the lamps draw the full amount of current supplied by the'generator, and the battery is only floating on the line, the lamps will receive a voltage equal to thatof the battery only.v If the lamps are all turned oil but one, ancLall the i current less that to supply the one lamp is forced through the battery, the voltage across the brushes of the generator will rise enormously, which means destruction to thel lamp. It' only half of the lamps are turned ofi' .the diilerence in voltage will not be so L great, but will still lbe too high for the lamps.
Since the commercial incandescent lamp is burning inst below the point' of destruction, it is evident that an increase of vvoltage will materially shorten the life of the lamp.
The objects ofthe present invention are to improve upon the construction and operation or' means for regulating circuits of the character described and increase the certainty and eflicienoy of operation of such regulating means.
Another object is to automatically prevent the rheosta't from affecting the batterywhen supplying current to the load.
Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear and to these ends the invention consists of apparatus for carrying, out the above objects embodying the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement oi parts having the general .mode of operation substantially as 'hereinafter full 7 described and claimed in this speciicationj and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which the figure is a diagramused.
'matic representation of circuits and appara- 'tus for, carrying out the invention.
Referring to the drawings A represents a suitable constant current generator which may be driven from any suitable source 'of power, as ior instance, an engine, or from the axle of .a car if the apparatus is to be used for car lighting.
B represents la storage battery connected in parallel with the `generator 1A, and C represents the work circuit in which the load consists of the lamps D although other translating devicesmay be inserted in the Work circuit.l i
lE represents a suitable rheostat comprising the contacts Fand resistance G inserted in series with the work circuit'C.
v A device for regulating the generator circuit is shown in the form of a rheostat, but anyothersuitable regulating means may be In this instance the rheostat is shown manually operated, the arm H being adapted to be moved over the contacts as by means of the handle I, and preferably the arm is provided with a pointer J whichinoves over an indicating scale K lor indicating the required position of the rheostat arm with a given 4load on the work circuit.l
4Means are provided for preventing the regulating 'device or rheostat from aecting lthe battery when the battery is supplying the work circuit, and preferably automatic means are provided for accomplishing this obj-ect. Any suitable circuits and connections m'ay be provided for preventing the rheostat from affecting the battery when the battery is supplying current, in this instance a rheostat being shunted by the automatic device L shown, preferably as an electromagnetic switch.
From the positive pole of the generator A a wire 1 leads to a switch contact 2, and from an adjacent switch contact 3 a wire 2a leads tothe electro magnets O and P of the automatic regulator L. From thence a wire 3a leads to the positivepole 4 of the battery B. From the point 5 on the wire 3a a connection 6 leads to the Contact arm H of the rheostat and from one end 7 ol' the resistance G, wire 8 leads to one contact 9 of a switch 10, which switch is provided with another contact ll connected to the armature I2, controlled by the electro magnets O and P. The other end ot the armature 12 is connected by a wire 13 with the point 14 on the wire 3a adjacent the magnet P. The armature 12 is provided with retracting means, in this instance in theA form of a weight 1V.'
From the contact Q a Wire 15 connects ivi th one side ol" the work circuit, the other side ol `which is connected to the point 16 on the vwire 17, Whichconnects the negative pole of the battery with the Wire 1S leading to the negative pole of the generator.
T he magnets O and i" are compound wenn d, one Winding asshown being in series ywith the generator circuit and the other Winding on each magnet being in a shunt cir cuit which leads from the point 19 on the Wire 1 adjacent the switch contacts 2 andS, to the magnets O and P by Wire 2"" and thence by Wire 2O to the point 21 on the wire 18.
in the operation of the circuits and apparatus disclosed, when. the generator A is supplying current to the Werl: circuit C, the windings on the magnets O and l? act cumulatively and attract the armature 12,- thereby closing the circuit at the switch contacts 2 and $3 by means of the switch blade 22 which bridges said contacts. The current then passes from the positive pole ofA the generator by means ot' Wire 1 to and through the switch contacts 2 and 3, thence by Wire 2 through the series windings on magnets O and l), thence by nire 3a te the point 5, by wire 6 through arm itl, a portion of resistance G, by Wire 8 to sii'itch'contact 9 and the circuit being broken at contacts 9 and 11, the current continues by Wire 15 to and through the Work circuit, and thence by Wire 18 to the negative brush of the generator A. The shunt windings on the magnets 0 and P are also energized by current passing from the point19 on wire 1, by Wire 20 to and through said shunt windings, and thence back to the negative side ol' the generator l by Wire 20.
ii'hcn the battery supplying current to the Werl; circuit the windings on the magnets O and P act dirl'erentially and thereby, permit the Weight iT to retract the armature 12 ywhich opens the circuit at the contacts 2 and 3, and closes the circuit between the contacts 9 and 11 of switch 1U. Current then passes lrom the 'positive pole of the battery B to the point .5,jthence through the shunt circuit provided by Wire l to the Apoint 14 adjacent the magnet i), and thence by Wire 13 to and through the armature 12, 'the switch 1t), through said siifitch which is closed and by Wire i5 to the Work circuit C and from said ivculi circuitby Wire 17 to the negative pele olf the battk B. The rheostat E is 'therefore shunted when the battery is supplying current i'or the Work circuit, and the battery' is not affected. by the resist? ance l Accorv ing to this tion. it will be seen that the armature 12 Vaornis a switch arm,
andI the Weight W has the function of a retracting device adapted tounove the switch arm 12 in the opposite direction to that in which it is moved b the electro-magnets li. Both shunt and series windings oi' the ele"- tro-magnet L are located on the saine of the switch arm 12, so that the retracting device opposes the action of the magnets. The switch arm 12 1s electrically' connected to the line between the resistance E and the electro-magnet L. The switch 22 the f' main switch in the 'line between the generator and the electro-magnet, while the switch 10 is thel auxiliary switch adapted to connect the battery to the work circuit at a point between the resistance E and the load, there-by short-circuiting the resistance when the battery is supplying the work i'fircuit.
Obviously some features ol' this invention may be used Without others and the invert tion may be embodied 1n widely varying forms.
Tl'ierefore, Without limiting the invention. to the devices shown and described, and 'without enumerating equivalents I claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent the follewing:
The combination of a Work circuit7 a main generator .feeding said Work circuit, a storage battery connected in parallel across the work circuit, a variable resistance in series with the work circuit, an armature forming a snit ch arm, a compound wound electro-magnet controlling said switch arm, a retracting device adapted to move the switch arm in the opposite direction to that in which it is moved by the electro-magnet, one winding of the magnet being in series with the lin andthe other winding beingin a shunt circun and both windings being located on the same side of the switch arm, said switch arm being electrically connected to the line be tweenftheresistance and the electro-magnet, a main switch in the line between the generator and the electro-magnet, and controlled by said switch arm, and an auxiliary switch adapted to connect the battery to vthe work circuit at a point between the resistance and theload, thereby short-circuit' the resistance when the battery is supplying the work circuit, said lseries and shunt winch ings on the electro-magnet acting cumulatively when the generator is supplying the Work circuit, and acting diilierentially when the battery disehargesback through the generator.
in 'testimony whereof l. have signed this specification in the presence oi' two subscribing Witnesses.
